Such a beautiful ending...which saved the movie for me. I was annoyed with it for many reasons to that point...BUT I feel like what went before justified and made sense with the end. It wasn't something sacharine and false out of the blue.
What I didn't get: Since only one out of four parents wanted the solution that was arrived at, why did it go that way anyway? I don't feel like that was explained in any of the scenes we saw.
But other than that, I loved this. A VERY gray-area, complicated situation, arrived at FINALLY with a gray-area, but actually pretty simple solution that will enrich all their lives.
I loathed this child and she was such a little shit that I did not care WHAT happened to her, I just knew that I wanted it to be BAD. What a freaking brat. And her dad who needed to quit threatening to beat her, and DO it. And I don't even believe in corporal punishment, but I'd make an exception for this one. And WHY the hell were her two friends so slavishly devoted to her? She was never anything other than sour and mean and rude to them, and yet there they were, always groveling at her feet and doing her bidding. In the big showdown toward the end, I wanted that woman teacher to punch her lights out SO BAD. And why does no one seem to think a coach banging a student is, like, maybe not so appropriate? And why does the Mongolian protect her? If some of this were explained, if I saw any redeeming qualities, I would maybe have felt some sympathy. But many kids have been thru far worse than this one without turning into little monsters. Everyone around her enabled her. Anyway...by the ending I was like, whatever...go run off a cliff for all I care.
This is the fourth or fifth Korean movie I've seen in the last couple of months in which the MC was a nasty, spoiled, self-centered, little shit of a teenage girl. Is this a problem over there?
Not a fan of movies that start out making the main characters unlikeable so I don't really care what happens to them later when it matters. The girl...an OBVIOUS nut case. I don't consider this a spoiler as you find this out in the first five minutes. The teacher...an OBVIOUS dumb-ass moron, to not see from the very beginning what was going down and take the simple steps required to prevent it. Again, not a spoiler, first five minutes. The wife...maybe as psycho as the girl or close. Speaking of "close," I kept expecting Glenn Close to show up. The guy's long-time female friend: that last choice she made was a really stupid one. Anyway, this is a cheap imitation of a thriller. The story, in the hands of a more talented director, could have been the basis for a wild ride. But it wasn't. Felt like a TV thriller to me. The actor who played the girl has real potential. She's also incredibly beautiful. Anyway, watch if you want, I don't care. :)
I think I already have, Maaya. But if not, I definitely will and if I have, perhaps I'll watch it a second time. I generally will rewatch films/series I like a second, third, whatever number of times as there are always elements I missed the first time around.
Yeo Jin Goo is EPIC. To play this role at such a young age and totally pull it off without a single false note that I caught is stunning. To have that range of acting talent AND to be that good-looking...the universe is unfair. Epic movie too. This isn't my kind of thing, or it didn't use to be, but Korea is making me a crime/thriller fan crazy-good movie by crazy-good movie. There were at least two hugely unreaalistic elements which I wish the director had found a more convincing way around, but that's two out of a thousand so I'll let it go.
I look forward to the sequel, for which I hope they were setting us up there at the end.
Idk if you watched it yet but yes. There's one bare butt scene which lasts for like three seconds but other than…
Isn't it bizarre that people are OK with blood and guts and gore and murder and torture but if one bare butt shows up on screen for a few seconds they lose their shit? I thought this was an American hang-up, but I guess not.
I gave this an 8/10 because of a few implausible elements that could have easily been fixed but weren't. The story itself and the acting are more like a 9/10 to me. If you don't mind thinking and having your assumptions challenged, and don't need a car to explode every ten minutes or so, this one may be for you.
I'm amazed at how you described it. If someone asked me I'd say boring yet intriguing. Or boring and yet not boring.…
Can you help me out and mention the scenes you found "over the top" and "unnatural?" Don't you think by now at this point in human history just about EVERYTHING, good, bad, and in between has been done so many times that ANYTHING is natural, as in humans are capable of it? And you think what you saw here is among the worst events/actions possible? Hmmm...
This one is unwholesome. I liked it, but it's irremediably unwholesome. Not recommended. But watch it. But not…
Help me out here. Your comment and the one above intrigue me. How is this movie more "fucked up" or "unwholesome" than a thousand twisted serial killer/rapist/torturer flicks out there?
I gave it a go, but I'm out at 37:44. Direction is horrible, acting is ridiculous, except for the lead, everything including the music feels melodramatic and overwrought. The story feels like it's going to get horrendous enough without adding embarrassing stuff that makes the film feel like a cheesy slasher in the making.
Is it a thing that people go to prison in Korea for severely injuring others who are in the act of attacking them, murdering their relatives or raping their loved one? I'm thinking of two instances here and one in "Prison Playbook." As violent as Korean society apparently is, it seems self-defense would be a prime defense in these cases.
Pretty good flick, for what it is, a fight-lover's dream. But even I enjoyed the amazing fight scene choreography, the touches of humor and the overall realism of the prison environment, not that I would know but it felt real.
few negatives: Who cast that skinny runway model with no muscles as the school bully, feared by all? Didn't buy it.
Is Korea's justice system that fucked-up? The entire room of students saw the bully abuse and beat bloody mutliple other people, before violently attacking the accused and putting the pen to his own eye. Yet the prosecutor says "the accused, despite the ALLEGED bullying attempted murder...blah blah blah..." PUH-LEASE and the kid ADMITS AND AGREES that it was attempted murder? No, I don't think so. It was self-defense and that trial end was silly. And the bully going on to become a magical blind-in-one-eye fighting machine for the mob was more implausible silliness.
But the relationship between the teacher and the student in prison was very believable and moving without being maudlin. I enjoyed their vibe. All the supporting prisoners were great I loved watching our hero become a fighting machine while maintaing his sensitivity and heart, but learning to control it and set it aside when need be.
At the end I think the bully would definitely have brought a knife or a gun to that fight, in case he got his ass kicked. 8/10
