Why does MDL always give the tile in Japanese rather than the translated title like they do with Korean and Chinese…
I know, I have the same issue (I can't remember those titles for the life of me).

But if you change the titles in English, 99% of the Jdrama addicts won't recognize the titles instead haha That is because they are familiar with the romaji titles, not some arbitrary English translations... also most streaming sites and other sources where you can watch / download your J dramas and subs will have them listed by the same Japanese title, so it's not much use if you have an English title anyway (from a practical pov i mean

Why does MDL always give the tile in Japanese rather than the translated title like they do with Korean and Chinese…
The difference comes from the producers themselves. Chinese ones use a lot of English when it comes to their movies and dramas. They almost always have an international official title (not one translated by foreign sites), they put those titles on the official posters, they release trailers already subbed and even the movies that come out are very often already subbed. Thai are pretty much the same, that is when you do get info about their productions.

Just to give you an example, for comparison, look at these sites and how they list titles: Chinese: http://movie.mtime.com/comingsoon/#comingsoon
Japanese: http://eiga.com/coming/
Korean: http://movie.daum.net/premovie/scheduled

Koreans are somewhere in between: for the mainstream movies they almost always have an official intl title and for dramas they are starting to do the same (if you look at their youtube channels, when promoting with teasers, trailers, BTS, using an intl title is slowly becoming the norm).

Now Japan is a different story (maybe because it's an island?!? dunno). They pretty much don't give a damn about their movies and dramas being sold / released abroad, so they can't be bothered to come up with official titles in English. The subbing communities are those doing pretty much all the work and there seems to be this unspoken rule to keep the romaji titles. Just as Japanese producers, the J fanbase is more of a closed community than the K, C, TW ones and many of them have a manga/anime interest as well. Now, since maaaany of the J anime dramas and movies are based on manga, it is easier for people to just use the same titles they are familiar with. I am sure if you ask a real J drama fan, you'll get more answers.
Also here is an interesting read to see how different J market is than other Asian countries and the rest of the world:
https://www.quora.com/Why-does-it-take-so-long-for-Hollywood-movies-to-be-released-in-Japan

But pretty much this is the reasoning behind MDL guidelines for listing dramas and movies. We go with the OFFICIAL name (as main title) whenever available (listing the different translations under the also known as tag) or we go with the most commonly used title across the web (on major streaming sites and similar databases)
It is also a SEO (Search Engine Optimization) must if we want MDL to grow more and more. ;)
