hey, I just started reading Destined to be a Phoenix. it's freaking long 1600 chapters, but it has a pretty good fl so far, so check it out 😉
Actually, scratch that. The novel is written with heavy focus on pointless speeches, what could be done in 2 chapters is excruciatingly stretched over 12. And the fl is just a wooden figure with no character. Ugh, dropped it.

No kidding. Netflix and even Viki are full of stupid and downright insulting the viewer's intelligence productions. I see maybe 2 "outside of the box" dramas produced a year now and it seems the "flop 2025" phenomenon for costume Korean dramas is starting to show in China 2026 😔 the same plots, tropes, the same typecasting, the same decor, the same music, the same mediocre adaptation of sometimes good material. Personally I don't have any interest in watching pompous asses in power or with money bullying, humiliating and hurting others. The long tradition of ruthless treatment of those less likely to put up a fight is mind boggling in real life - do I need to subject myself to watching it also for "entertainment"?

Yes, the historically placed novel is pretty much like the modern plot you described

I honestly can't because this IMHO this is the best fl centered plot that I ever read. In other stories fl relies on brawn, or a ml or manipulates people. Here she is so awesomely determined to self destruct without making a bang but obliterating everything with her quiet but soft vengeance. Some folks say The Double or Malicious Empress were good, but I find them tedious if not bombastic. There is a fl that I liked regardless of her weakness: Days of Seclusion and Love. I can't remember any other- most of the novels are pretty darn similarly boring🫤

Thanks. I did not read The Double and at this point probably won't. I read Legend of Female General and was disappointed with the drama. Not the first and not the last time

the synopsis calls for a team of women but the cast list is starting with and featuring heavily males. wth? 😒

I am with you on the 1. It is so unnecessary but fits in their Confucian / Taoist ideals of fated connection (as if it was not ok to just get together with no prerequisites of being childhood sweethearts - I mean, is this CCP directive on how to have a relationship? )
2. There are some kickass fl out there... If you can stand the whiny voice of the actress Shadow Love and Are You the One, each has one. Also, someone called the fl in Fated Hearts a pitbull in make up, to name a few. I personally like kind and smart leads even if they have to work with what they get (A Dream of Spend or, Coroner's Diary, Under the Moonlight)
And yes, I could not wait to drop this one😆😆😆😆

As is any person using money, power of position or brute force which cdramas show up the jazooo not only in the costume series. And we all - like kids with fairy tales - hope that evil will get kicked in the sack, mauled to death or disposed off somehow as reality taught us going the legal and noble way is a waste of time and effort. We root for underdog and give high rating to titles that have that happy element of "they got what they deserved" rather than stark reminder of corruption being ever present and humanity not having any decent way out.
