I Tried, But I Can’t
I love Wang Duo, and Guo Jingming, but I can’t continue with this one. While the drama has genuinely funny, offbeat moments, getting to them has been a struggle, and the balance between what works and what doesn’t feels too uneven.I’ve watched similar dramas when I was younger that leaned into exaggerated, light teen comedy and cute, stylized delivery (like Clarissa Explains It All or Out of This World). That approach just doesn’t resonate with me anymore, and I may have simply aged out of that format.
The drama focuses on everyday, business-oriented lifestyles, centering on a younger generation in the fashion industry, with an older one in the background. I’ve watched half of the series, that's a fair chance to know if it works for me—and ultimately, it's just not my cup of tea.
A Dark & Psychological Piece That Pushes Limits
The performances in this drama were masterful—raw, realistic, and emotionally gripping. The character development was gradual and immersive, drawing me in before I even realized how invested I’d become. Despite that, this was a difficult watch and definitely not for everyone. While this is heavy subject matter, it didn’t feel exploitative. That said, it explores the darkest sides of human behavior—mental health struggles, manipulation, enabling, mind control, assault, toxic relationships, and delusional thinking. Though I understood the characters’ backstories and motivations, it was an emotionally taxing narrative, and I grew to deeply resent both main leads and the destruction they caused.
It’s been compared to Goodbye My Princess, but Love & Bid Farewell is even more disturbing and traumatic. Watching this depends on the viewer’s sensitivity to the subject matter, and trigger warnings are essential.
A Fresh Take on a Familiar Transmigration Setup
I just loved this drama—and it completely took me by surprise. I don't think I had any preconceived notions going in, but I definitely didn’t expect to fall in love with the narrative the way I did. It follows the familiar “sucked-into-the-novel” storyline and sticks to the usual script. But what I really appreciated was that, despite using a familiar prototype, the drama introduced subtle nuances that made it feel fresh. Each episode delivered engaging side plots and character-driven stories through cases and investigations. And that style was a win for me.I also found the entire drama hilarious, and the romance hit all the right notes for me—authentic, gradual, and never forced or cliché. I especially loved the family dynamics and the emotional growth, both within each character and between them. The execution was solid, the performances were strong, and the quality remained consistent throughout the series.
Strong Female Lead But Slow-Paced Narrative
I was engaged in a few subplots, which is what kept me watching through to the end to see how they would develop. However, overall I only enjoyed a handful of episodes, and I wouldn’t recommend this if we have similar tastes in dramas. The drama as a whole felt quite slow-paced for me, and there wasn’t much in the way of narrative pull to keep me genuinely invested. I struggled to stay engaged throughout and ultimately found the production underwhelming. In hindsight, I probably should have dropped it midway rather than finishing it.
A Drama That Struggled to Engage on Multiple Levels
This was a disappointing watch and not one of my favorite dramas with Yu Xuanchen. I struggled to finish it because I couldn’t connect with the characters or the overall storyline. The narrative felt quite basic, and I never found a strong hook to pull me in. The plots and humor didn’t land for me, and much of the execution felt flat, which made it difficult to stay engaged. Even when the story introduced new situations or attempted to build momentum, I still felt somewhat detached from what was happening on screen.Ultimately, I didn’t find much that worked for me or anything strong enough to offset the parts that didn’t land. It just wasn’t a match for my taste.
Hollow Despite Its Premise
I can’t believe I stuck with it for so long with no payoff. The plot revolved almost entirely around identity confusion and flat character dynamics. It was underdeveloped and had huge plot holes. Major conflicts were introduced but never explored or resolved in any meaningful way. What should have been emotional turning points were rushed or glossed over, leaving the story feeling hollow. I’m honestly baffled by how much of a miss this drama turned out to be.
A Slow-Burn Mystery That Unfolded Across Families and Generations
Yes, this took me a year to finish. I started it when it first dropped and was excited—but this is my life now: It can take me a long time to finish anything over 26 episodes depending on my periphery. However, I loved it.I've heard many people say they found this dry and slow, but I often wonder if it released at the wrong time. It followed The Double, which I ended up dropping—even though most people were enthralled by its high-stakes thrills and fast-paced plot. I would imagine anything would have a hard time following it. With that in mind, Follow Your Heart definitely lives in its own space. And I loved it for its meandering, thoughtful storytelling. It gave me time to connect with the day-to-day lives of the characters and to fully appreciate their evolving relationships and growth. Hot-headed characters matured and found redemption, broken ties were mended, and families and friends came together under pressure and common threats. I also really enjoyed the overarching conflict that spanned generations and multiple families. It unraveled gradually, with smaller culprits leading up to a major one—who ended up being a huge surprise. Based on critiques, I don't know if this is for everyone, but it was for me.
A Hilariously Quirky Drama with Unexpected Emotional Weight
I really enjoyed this drama. It’s quirky, offbeat, and full of unexpected humor—I was frequently cackling. While the plot has darker undertones and high-stakes conflict, the tone leans more comedic, with a romance that builds awkwardly (in a good way) rather than following a typical formula. The pacing dipped a bit near the end, but it absolutely stuck the landing—the final episodes were incredibly moving. I’d recommend this even if comedy or romance isn’t usually your thing. If your taste leans toward the kind of humor and romance in Go Princess Go or My Lady General, this might be right up your alley.
Fantasy and Spirits: A Comedic Story That Loses Momentum
I wouldn’t really recommend this drama, which is disappointing to say because the first half was quite engaging and very comedic. I enjoyed the lead couple’s dynamic as well as the supporting cast, and the pacing early on felt strong and entertaining. However, after the midpoint, the story lost momentum for me. The central conflict between the leads began to feel drawn out, and the emotional tension that initially worked started to feel repetitive and less engaging over time. Some side storylines were interesting and added variety, particularly in how they tied into the broader world-building. However, I felt several of these threads weren’t fully developed or given enough resolution, which left certain parts of the story feeling incomplete.Overall, while there are enjoyable elements and a few strong character dynamics, the narrative became less satisfying as it progressed, and the conclusion felt unclear in its execution and overall impact.
An Engaging Story Structure Weakened by the Script
Recently, I’ve been referring to “meh” watches as rotten tomatoes, and this one fits the bill. I started watching it when it first came out at the end of last year, but I took a long break because I struggled with the execution.I can’t clearly recall my initial impression, but I suspect I was drawn in by the premise and narrative structure, which had an engaging framework. However, I quickly became less fond of the female lead’s performance. The portrayal felt overly exaggerated at times and lacked the authenticity and strength I was hoping for, which ultimately detracted from the overall story for me. The twists were interesting, and the structure of the storyline itself was enough to keep me engaged. That said, the ending felt underwhelming despite being happy. There were still moments I appreciated, particularly the development and reconnection between the female lead and the second female lead, which I found compelling.
However, overall, there weren’t enough strong or emotionally impactful moments to outweigh the aspects that didn’t work for me.
A Low-Budget Reincarnation Drama That Delivers Emotional Impact
I loved it. It’s low-budget so the dialogue isn’t the best. There are problematic scenes. It’s short content so there are holes in the storyline. Not every actor gave the best performance. And the female lead passes out in almost every episode. But I was engaged in the narrative. I even cried at the start of the last episode and sighed at the end of it. We don’t fully understand why they continuously reincarnated together, so there are unresolved scenes. But it's rated high on my watch list, and I would recommend this.
Fate and Demons: A Surprisingly Fun Watch with a Hilarious Female Lead
This drama received mixed reviews from the audience, mainly because many didn't like the female lead, but I greatly enjoyed it. My only initial critique was the use of an aggressive male lead trope. However, I found the female lead hilarious and the storyline incredibly engaging. The first and second halves of the drama had different tones, but they still worked well in terms of continuity. I personally fell in love with the characters and thought the actors delivered them well. Although the script wasn’t the strongest, the overall performance and execution helped offset its flaws. I’d recommend this as a good in-between watch.
Immersive & Stunning: A Standout Xianxia Drama That Remains a Personal Favorite
Till the End of the Moon has remained my favorite Chinese drama, even after many rewatches. It’s the xianxia watch that never gets old and has yet to be topped for me.What stood out most was the strength of the performances and the emotional depth the cast brought to their roles. I really appreciated the character development, layered storytelling, and the way the series built out its world — from the mythology and lore to the distinct identities of demons and immortals. The costumes and soundtrack added even more atmosphere, making the experience feel immersive and memorable.
I’ve also read the original novel, which has only deepened my appreciation. Even a year later, the drama still represents everything I enjoy about mythology-centered Chinese series. While there were a few minor production quirks with styling and accessories, they didn’t take away from how much I value the overall experience.
One of My Favorite Chinese Historical Comedies
This is one of my top ten favorite Chinese dramas and among my favorite miniseries. When I first started watching it, I was initially unsure about the tone and setup, but it quickly became clear that it leans heavily into comedy with a much more playful and layered approach than expected. The story follows a general who becomes involved in efforts tied to a larger political situation, which naturally pulls her into the orbit of a mysterious and unconventional figure connected to a covert group. While the premise sounds serious, the execution is primarily comedic, with strong character dynamics and humor driving much of the appeal. Despite the light tone, the relationships and interactions feel engaging and surprisingly compelling, which makes it easy to stay invested. The pacing remains consistently strong without noticeable drag, and the underlying political tension adds depth without overwhelming the comedy.
Overall, I highly recommend it if you enjoy character-driven historical comedies with a mix of humor, intrigue, and strong ensemble dynamics.
A Detective-Driven Historical Drama with Court Intrigue and Steampunk Flair
I absolutely loved this. It’s a smart and intricately interwoven feature that never once lost its spark for me. The central plot revolves around a larger case, with smaller ones branching out from it, creating a strong investigative theme. If political thrillers with detective footwork aren’t your thing, this drama might not be a win for you. But for me, the drama’s foundation in investigation is enriched by beautifully poignant characterization and emotionally resonant events. The storytelling evolves naturally and draws you into the characters' lives and conflicts, making you feel with them as they navigate their challenges. The detective elements give the story its intelligence, grounding it in thoughtful investigation and layered storytelling. The aesthetics—steampunk gadgets, secret organizations, and spy networks—add a distinctive visual flair that feels both immersive and inventive. What truly elevates the experience, though, is the emotional poignancy of the scenes and performances; the drama doesn’t just intrigue—it resonates. The cast brought their roles to life with depth and sensitivity, and the cinematography beautifully supported both the atmosphere and the emotional weight.
All these elements blend together seamlessly to create something that feels intelligent, striking, and deeply affecting.
