Is the show condoning abuse? Because a lot of what Mother does in the name of tough love can be interpreted as…
I don't think it's condoning abuse, it is literally portraying what happens in real life. Not a lot of people in reality who has been pushed and prodded by their parents in the name of love and betterment to achieve academically, and financially, go all out later in life to hold their parents actions accountable. Especially in asian culture. In fact, we try to understand where they are coming from and forgive in whatever little way we can, as we grow older, even if it causes us generational and parental trauma. This drama is literally showing this. It's not right, but it is what happens in a lot of families. We can judge and we can observe, but in no way can we deny this . If we as audience choose to forgive the mother's actions due to her circumstances then we simply do. If the audience doesn't believe the mother deserves forgiveness, we simply don't. I don't believe the show is picking a side either.
The people saying this isn't a BL are clearly blind. Like, how can you not tell that Shiro is already halfway in love with Ichiro by episode 5?? And everybody around them knows it too!! Chika clearly sees it, Nakaba Rion knows that her brother got married and now has a house husband in her absence while the bodyguards are genuinely happy but also a little scared that their boss is getting soft after acquiring a boyfriend. This is sooooo BL! They are such a soft, cuddly, fluffy, domestic badass couple living together, absolutely smitten by each other. THIS IS QUINTESSENTIAL OLD-SCHOOL BL!!!! And if you ask when Ichiro starts falling, I would say around the time he dreams of Shiro touching him softly to wake him up. This is literally a BL period. There is so much chemistry, so much lingering eye contact, symbolic hints of their relationship and LOVE. There is so much love between these two... I can't ever imagine either of these two moving out or separating unless they go through like, a "REAL" couple's breakup!
The ending of this is what draws me in every time, over and over again... There is so much pain, so many broken pieces but there is also hope and love too, at the end of it all. Someone to hold, someone to understand, someone to love. And no matter what Woong felt, love or friendship or a little(read a lot) of both, he just knew he couldn't live without Yong Joo... (Seriously this movie deserves wayyy more recognition). And in my mind, I don't think there is any singular word or definition for what Gi Woong felt for Yong Joo either. This is a hauntingly beautiful movie, and kudos to the actors.
Ok, but the king actually fell in love with Bong Hwan. And like, even Bong Hwan reciprocated it. That makes this queer, doesn't it?!! This should really be tagged BL too!
Do we know if all the victims were women? Also the prime suspects so far seem to be Min Suk, her brother, the FL's father, the FL's father's class friend, the father's brother who was tearing up books in FL's room. I hope I'm not missing anyone! And a few things still bothering me is how that one tomboy girl in class seems to share some sort of a secret with Min Suk. why the police officer disappeared too for 30 years? Does the killer only target people who had some connection to the village in 1987? And did the killings actually stop after Min Suk's brother went to prison?
Ban Ya has more main character energy than the female lead. I mean she even has more chemistry with Kang San in just five scenes than Dan Oh has throughout the series.
Spoilers from the movie (its up to you to read or not to read ) …
Oh my gosh!! That seems like such a rollercoaster, and I should keep tissues ready! I hope Jaewon does tonnes of groveling and apologizing before Jihyun takes him back. But at least it's a HEA!!
Why do I get the feeling, at some point Jihyun is going to get his soft heart badly crushed?!!😭 He is so soft, and I don't think I'll survive his pain. And people I'm really speculating here, so no spoiler tag, cause I've no idea what's going to happen, I'm only guessing... But if you feel the vibes of this drama, it has this melancholic undertone, all kind of pointing at Jihyun getting his first heartbreak. Jaewon is all kinds of amazing, but he is also a red flag. He initiates a kiss, and then pretends it didn't happen, says he wants to be friends but forgets it the next moment, pulls this baby boy closer and then pushes away, holds hands tighter then let's go like it means nothing. I understand he is struggling, but all of these really are signs of a red flag. Hurting someone, just because you're lost is a red flag. And it's just that lost and confused men, sometimes can break the hardest things in a moment, without being even aware of it. While on the other hand Jihyun's attraction, his naivete is so open, so honest, and raw. It breaks my heart to see him so vulnerable and seeking only a belonging, an anchor in a new city, in a new life, in a new feeling. I think all I need to know is this is HEA, before I continue getting emotionally invested in the Eighth Sense. If this is an open ending/ sad ending, I'll be traumatized. (I just can't deal with bad endings anymore after 25/21 and 20th century girl, I'm so done)
Aeri, Yoonwon and the bar ahjumma are already three confident, strong women I'm staning here! One is like a mother, another is like a doting sister while the other is like a best friend.
Jihoon might become the next amazing idol-actor after Junho! And both he and Hongkyung, (in fact the whole team) need to at least be nominated for the award season, if not sweep it. Barely anything in kdrama land came close to having such an emotional impact on me. Edit: congrats to Hong Kyung, but they defo robbed Jihoon and the team, by not even nominating him/ them for best actor or best drama. But you know what, I have always believed overlooked, underrated unrecognized dramas are infact superior.
