Yestarday I watched "One Day, You Will Reach the Sea" that for me left a lot to be desired, by change I watched this one today. There's a few similarities. Both rely on flashbacks for some character development and both are about multiple perspectives and characters not seeing each other's side. The biggest difference is that Baton is actually a good movie, with an actual (good) story to tell and knows exactly what it wants to do. I was a huge pleasant surprise!
Also, anyone else thought that Kei Takana looks and feels like Hiroyuki Sanada from the 80's? Like, in Kaito Ruby?
If you ever feel like watching this movie, don't. Instead watch "And so the Baton is Passed", because there's a few similarities. Trailer and poster was a bit misleading, I'm disappointed.

Not that good or interesting, actually. I was "baited" by the movie and poster. I thought the protagonist was gay for her friend, and she may really be, but this isn't really relevant to the story despite they showing possible kisses between the two. The movie is more one of those stories of "how you don't actually know people close to you". There's a scene when the protagonist gets really mad with her friend's boyfriend, part of the reason is that he thinks he didn't actually understood her friend and she understood her friend much better, but like we see in other scenes from her friend point of view, she actually didn't get a lot about her friend. So you start the movie thinking it's a romance (one sided), then you start to realize that it's actually about her thing, and them the movie tells you that's actually also about the consequences of the 2011 tsunami.
In the end felt like it wanted to be too many things at once without knowing where to focus (of being thematically episodic). I watched a lot of this directors movies recently, I like his movies, but he is still "not there yet", something is still lacking? Is my impression.
And btw, I don't recommend reading or watching My Broken Mariko. There isn't really much of worth on that story. "Oh, the drama, oh the suffering..." nah,
Regret start watching this. The develpment is too slow, the dramas are framing from a "too japanese angle", the…
I may be wrong (finished episode 6), but If I understood right, Kana can have children. Isn't just her uterus that is damaged? Is so if some day she and her partner wants to have a baby they can hire a surrogate mother. So I don't understand why so much drama, they are not aware of this? Is Kana's desire to gestate the child? Isn't this allowed because of the "too japanese" that I mentioned?
Regret start watching this. The develpment is too slow, the dramas are framing from a "too japanese angle", the dialogue is very stiff often also with not good acting and some other things. A big spoiler:
I'm still watching trying to finish it because I have ulterior motives, but I DO NOT RECOMMEND! Forget this, don't watch! It's stupid! The protagonist does nothing, absolutely nothing at all, she just let's everything happen to her and around her and things do happens because of "coincidences" and "destiny". E-VE-RY-WE-EK of this series. It's all super stupid, half the character actions are nonsensical. He romantic interest behavior was already very annoying in the first half but it becomes unbelievable in the second.
Really, this is bad, really bad, believe me and don't waste time with this.
I REALLY want to to watch this one. Edit: that's Lina! Many here may known her from a TV shows about her traveling alone to Iron to meet her grandpa with whom his father had cut relations before she was born. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rH_gKnTAI-U
Now that you mention I realize that I watched almost everything he wrote!
I really don't remember the abuse part in Choki, only that I thought it was average and didn't leave it's mark with me. I also watched Transferring and I liked, being a short. It was nice, but again, didn't ended leaving any mark as I didn't found anything it wanted "to say". But Neko... I loved! Really liked the "twist" and I shilled this little drama hard! Wish more people would watch so I couldn't comment with then, "did you noticed about the cat?"
Now I think I'll watch "Bishonure Tantei Mizuno Hagoromo" for completeness, why not? And maybe "My Daddy" if it's available.
Also, anyone else thought that Kei Takana looks and feels like Hiroyuki Sanada from the 80's? Like, in Kaito Ruby?
Instead of watching this movie watch "And so the Baton is Passed" (like I commented above).

It's not the movie, it's the drama if the duration is right.
And I wonder if Lina's family was chosen to star this because Lina's father is kurd.

Balanced view... I understand the importance of discussions about "criminal" rehabilitation but this wasn't it.
