Lol that is a very low bar... ELOD must be the worst xianxia ever. I read the book for ALP and the few episodes I saw failed to capture the essence of the novel so I dropped it.

ZDY actually has very limited range of expressions and they are all ugly cry or childish cute, which are adorable kid expressions but I find very unseemly in a grownup. She can't do a wide range of in between emotions which doesn't matter in movies bc they are only 2 hours, her time is limited. In dramas actresses like her get totally busted - Zhang Ziyi is also the same. ZDY ruined Sparrow which should have been a masterpiece were it not for her lousy interpretation. I didn't watch ALP.

Yeah but it takes a lot of time and ZDY probably didn’t want to. It is one of the reasons she got heavy criticism for that. I don’t like her acting at all.

She is definitely not one of my favourites although I find her gorgeous. As an actress I think she is ok and her best role was TLB which I really enjoyed. But I also don't like many traffic actors... you are not weird it is good to have your own opinion even when everyone else doesn't agree with you.

Well if they do historicals its usually dubbed irrespective of whether they can deliver the lines themselves. But there are actors like Yang Zi who try to make it a point to dub themselves. You can just assume actors that come from the big screen don't need to be dubbed, if they are its for production related reasons.

I have only watched Wallace's Cantonese movies so idk but most Cantonese actors don't quite meet the CHINA standard mandarin high bar. Like till this day listening to Donnie Yen, Tony Leung, Andy Lau, Louis Koo... the underlying Canto tone is unmistakable, esp to a native Canto speaker like me. But many of them have over the years gotten their Mandarin to an "acceptable" level, which is kind of where I am but I always feel very outclassed by my friends who are natural native speakers. Like I know how I would LIKE to sound but I just can't do it. It is very hard.

Ah ok... idk his personal life but I loved to hate his villain in both Princess Weiyoung and Royal Nirvana. I really don't like Zhou Liying so I didn't watch Princess Agents (and Minglan).

Yes that is one way but I want to support him to do his own. For movies (and certain "serious dramas") you cannot overdub, it disqualifies the production for awards. I would like to see him work at his line delivery and accent (but its HARD) so that he can graduate to the big screen. Yang Mi is the perfect example of a lazy actor whose whole career is made on her voice dubber. Her voice is so bad she squeaks through her lines. If you watch the TMOPB BTS she doesn't even bother to speak her lines properly bc she knows she is gonna be dubbed. But bc of that she gets close to zero lines in her movies and she doesn't get that many movies even though she is an icon.

Jin Han? He is a really good actor but he is best at villain/complex roles. I think he may be wasted as a lead but it doesn't bother me as much as the director and the Mary Sue plot. Its the Fuyao director and a so far very mediocre scriptwriter - I really disliked Fuyao so I want to wait for some of my picky friends to watch it first before investing time in it. I do think Peng Xiaoran is great but that alone won't make a good drama. Initial Douban feedback is not great.

It is a terribly sad drama but you won't regret watching it anyway. And if you don't watch One and Only, Forever and Ever will just be a pretty forgettable modern romance.

Oh the Chinese viewers are terrible snobs about accents... even when they themselves don't speak standard mandarin (tbh not many people do). My Beijing friends refused to watch Longest Day in Changan bc Jackson Yee speaks with heavy Southern/Guangdong accent which don't fit an elite Beijing nobleman. Xu Kai also gets grief for his Guangzhou/Cantonese accent. Mark Chao is widely praised for having successfully erased his Taiwanese accent in his latest dramas. Ren Jialun is heavily criticised bc he has not progressed much on his line delivery, tone and accent and skates by thanks to his voice dubbers. I personally think he was pretty bad in the early episodes of F&E (like what is with the sighing???) but he has gotten a bit better in the last few episodes so fingers crossed. I am personally sympathetic bc I have to try hard to get rid of my Cantonese accent when I speak but at the same time, I totally get where the native speakers are coming from.

Ah ok... the Jun Jiu Ling ratings are also pretty atrocious. I haven't checked out the Justice.

No the initial Douban feedback is genuinely quite good, like way better than say Jun Jiu Ling. But it is not as good as the feedback on One and Only when it first came out.But the feedback is ok so far, The main area of their complaint is on Ren Jialun's line delivery and accent. Monotone, non standard mandarin and low energy/heavy sighing. I think this is quite a fair criticism and frankly one that is a known acting weakness of Ren Jialun. International fans may not care as much bc they are mainly relying on subs but as someone that only listens and doesn't read subs, I know where they are coming from. I am just less jud-gey bc I don't speak perfect standard mandarin myself.

I think that must be Jun Jiu Ling. I haven't had time to watch it I just went to Douban and skimmed the reviews, they are terrible.

Well its impossible to get 100pct positive comments and there were 2 or 3 trolls for O&O but the initial feedback was really fantastic, mostly 4-5 star reviews. F&E is also getting a lot of 3-4 stars but a lot more 1-2 stars. Its not bad. Its much much better than what I saw initially for ALP, Stand By Me, Song of Youth and the latest Jun Jiu Ling - all of those got trashed from the very start.

One thing I like a lot about Douban is they don't show any rating until more than half the drama has aired and a minimum no of people have voted. That way, unlike MDL a few really good or really bad votes can't influence everyone else's decision to watch.
