She wasn’t neglected, they were not yet married at the time. That’s why YDZ promised to return for her before the wedding. After the wedding she was his favorite consort according to the the novel he only spent 10 pct of his time with his other concubines.

I don't know where this comes from bc I didn't read the TBOY novel and it doesn't happen in the DY novel. But I don't think it makes any sense either.

That's not really true. He saw her and was struck by her beauty and married her. Even though Xiao Se's mother was allegedly his true love, she was his favorite consort. He neglected his many other consorts and spent most of his time with her.
