What she wanted before YDZ showed up was to see the world and be free which in those times was not a realistic goal for a woman. Having said that, once she escaped and lived with YDZ, he closed both eyes and never came after her so he did set her free. He could gone after her but he didn't. She went back and disaster ensued. In fact he told her, you should not have come back. So I don't think its fair to say its all his fault.

I am quite sure that he is definitely not working for the Japanese. This was a very confusing period of civil war with many different interests. But if I remember my history correctly he is just working for the Wang puppet govt which was just different factions within the KMT itself. They were all against the Japanese but some "cooperated" to gain advantage over the other side. But I need to refresh my memory on this period of history. This strikes me as not that easy to watch bc it was quite chaotic with many combating interests.

They shouldn't have. Even though they didn't change that many things, the writer is really not good and uses many modern phrases that clash with Zhou Munan's original prose. I can tell what is original material and what is not. Luckily they didn't muck with a lot but it still makes me cringe every now and then and It takes me out of the story. It is why I decided to just read the novel. By comparison, the prose in TBOY is very good, I can't really tell what is written by Zhou Munan and what is written by the scriptwriter.
