I am always sad to lose my fav actors to movies - Lei Jiayin, Zhu Yilong, Liu Haoran... But yes, they are talented and hardworking and deserve it.

Xianxias are Chinese fairytales. I grew up on them so I kind of like them even when I know they are bad or cheesy. But I think if I didn't grow up on them, I wouldn't like them that much.

Yes, Chinese movies with the right script and cast is the way to go. That's why you rarely see movie actors in dramas. Liu Haoran and Zhu Yilong most recently made the transition from dramas to movies and Zhang Ruoyun is trying.

China's box office is bigger than the US box office now with top movies grossing over US$800mm. Top movie actors can get revenue share. So the top Chinese actors only do movies. Dramas are all loss making. A movie ticket is the cost of 3 months drama subscription on Tencent. Idol actors only make dramas to be seen by their fans all the time so they can remain hot and get brand endorsements. Dilraba was the top earner on endorsements in 2023 and made USD$500mm in endorsements. But no one would ever pay her one red cent to make a movie bc her acting is not movie calibre. Two different ways to make money.

Have you watched Creation of Gods: Kingdom of Storms. That is based on Investiture of Gods and too 8 years to make. There are another 2 movies coming out each year. Movies can make money. Some dramas do also but most of them are loss making.

Hmmmm does not sound promising but I am sympathetic. The kiss scene BTS are all killjoys it’s like cameras and gawking onlookers intrusively at every angle.

My problem Is the first ZDY drama I watched was Sparrow. I loved everything about it except ZDY. I was never able to watch her again so I didn’t watch Palace.

Never watched that Zhou Dongyu is on my NO list since Sparrow.

I never saw that but I know Yang Zi’s first kiss scene was with him.

I have watched all of the dramas that made her famous and I haven’t seen any.

I think xianxia has indeed been largely disappointing. But it should not be. There are many amazing mythical stories from Investiture of Gods, Journey to the West and Stories of Mountains and Seas. Sadly the xianxia genre that gets adapted for drama is pretty much only romance focused which is the least amazing part of the genre.

Never seen ZLY in passionate kiss scenes. Do they exist?

Well there is quite some competition - Zhao Xun, Dong Jie, Zhao Wei, Ma Yili, Tang Yan….
