Yes I agree completely. Gu Wan'niang presents Li Ni with the facts and trusted him to make the right choice. It is even handed and it respects his ability to come to the right judgement. And she consoled him by giving him the best gift, an accurate picture of his mother. Cui Lin likes to shove fait accompli down his throat. She doesn't trust him to make the right call so she leaves him no choice. Its not fair and if anyone I were dating did that to me repeatedly, it would be so over.

I think he would have made a far better emperor than King Liang.

His father's hold on the throne is shaky. Cui Army is not behind him. Together with Cui Yi he can force his father to abdicate in favor of the Imperial Grandson. The Court (including PM Gu) would support that bc it respects the succession rules, - the Imperial Grandson is the rightful successor. I think between PM Gu and CP Xiao they can make good regents. And between Zhenxi and Cui armies they can stabilize all the important strongholds. Li Ni is more important at the front line now that the kingdom is facing an imminent invasion. Cui Yi is a strong general that is getting old. The emperor is just a referee - it is usually the capable bureacracies that do all the important work. It is a suffocating job caged in a palace. I like Li Ni too much to see that happen to him. I don't care what Cui Lin thinks, I don't like her at all. If she forces Li Ni to take the throne, I hope he has to marry Gu Wanniang as well.

There are many examples in history of this working - there were many child emperors in Chinese history. One of the great Song emperors had his stepmother as regent until he grew up. Song was a vast empire at the time. As long as the military power is divided/balanced between different generals and they all support the throne it works. And btw, that is how it also works even with a grownup emperor. If a general becomes to powerful with too much military power he seizes the throne. That would be Cao Cao and then the Sima family in 3 Kingdoms. Prime Minister Gu has no military power. It is very rare for PMs to seize power bc they have no military command. Sun Jing was able to revolt bc he was a military governor and ironically was given an army to put down rebellions!!! Most of the time the PM is more influential in the court than the emperor anyway and the smart ones are usually the real power behind the throne.

It is most common for the child's mother to be Regent or joint Regent with the Prime Minister. That is why she shrewdly escaped the palace once King Liang took the throne. She is the only one who has no conflict of interest and as a woman has no claim on the throne. The emperor can only hold on to the throne with a strong army behind him. Between the Cui and Zhenxi army that should be enough now that Sun Jing's rebellion has been put down. As it is, there is a brewing civil war bc its clear Cui Yi is also on the brink of rebellion. I think he is more inclined to support the grandson although that calculus could change if his son-in-law takes the throne. This puts Li Ni in a terrible position - he would have to depose his own father. That is a big no no in terms of Confucian morality. Whatever it is Dayu kingdom have some big decisions to make bc the enemies are at the gate so they can't continue to indulge in their little civil war of many factions.

Well if Li Ni really is based on Li Shimin even though he loved his empress, he married many many many women including Wu Tzetian. Emperors tend to do that. Their eldest son and first crown Prince was gay and was so incompetent he had to be demoted. His heir ends up marrying his consort Wu Tzetian and letting her go on to terrorize the nation.

Well it would serve her right if he does become emperor and has to marry many noble consorts, one from each family to get the aristocrats behind him, including the lovely Ms Gu. I will lmao at her if that is how it plays out.

All their conflicts seem to be driven by unreasonable behavior on Cui Lin’s part. The LCF tantrum was another eye roller.

But basically he is a traitor in the past timeline so JXN knows what he is going to do. XW is suspicious of him bc he is part of the treacherous Xingwu guard and is hanging around Yan Lin.

I am also not a fan of how the plot is unfolding. I like Cui Lin less and less with each episode. What she did with the fake boy Prince was the same kind of reckless and callous indifference she had for the old couple. She also doesn’t communicate with Li Ni over such an important and risky gamble bc she knows he won’t agree. Finally she felt all along his idea of returning to Laolan Pass is unrealistic but she just humored him while she makes her own plans for his future. She didn’t even care that much if the kid died ibc then LinNi is the only choice left for crown Prince. At this point if they break up I will call it a happy ending.

I think it’s misguided of Cui Lin to think the only way to do good is to sit on the throne; arguably Li Ni is better at being Minister of Defense. A good emperor is also a politician who knows how to balance ambitious and capable ministers in the court and preside over essentially administrative functions of government. In other words a real snooze fest for a man of action like Li Ni. That said Li Ni is written to be a bit too ridiculously lacking in ambition.

Better that than bludgeon each other for the throne!
