Yes that would suggest the kid is presumed dead or is really dead. Bc Sun Jing is holding Li Ni's father captive, he can declare the boy dead and just crown King Liang and turn him into his puppet. Many of these usurpurs don't dare seize the throne outright. Both Cao Cao and Sima Yi didn't dare do it although they ran the country. They were superstitious. So if Li Ni were to be a bad guy, he won't try that hard to save the boy.
