This director has dreadful camera angles. Everything is either overly zoomed in or at awkward and visually unappealing angles. He somehow manages to take 16:9 aspect ratio and make it look like the ancient 4:3. Which is not an easy thing to do. I feel like I am watching a 1990s TVB drama and not in a good nostalgic way. I am also not sure how Gulnezer manages to make action look so still. It takes a kind of talent that will never be appreciated sadly.
The best thing about this so far is Xu Kai's spear work. It looks like he really worked hard at it and it looks pretty damn good. My niece competes in wushu and the spear is her best weapon so I watch a lot of spear techniques with her. I think Xu Kai trained hard at the weapon and he has the height and strength to wield it well and make it look so effortless.
