This is such a fantastic show. I never thought this kind of setup would be remotely interesting as I have serious doubts China has rule of law in the Western sense.

It is implied that they did. In one of the subsequent stories a mysterious lady in a yellow dress shows up to give assistance in a desperate fight and it is suggested she is their descendent. It is not clear however if she is their child, grandchild or just a disciple. Many Jin Yong fans of course believe she is their daughter while others point out she is too young. I can't remember which story she shows up in and the event in detail but maybe someone else does bc it was just a brief moment. If I had to guess I would say she pops up in Heaven Sword bc that takes place after ROCH.

As far as I know Red Flower Society and all its associated members is fictional but there were many secret societies plotting the overthrow of Qing and restoration of Ming during that time. Jianghu and all these secret societies were the precursors of all the secret societies and triads that still exist today. Its so sad - they used to be heroes and now they are nothing but gangsters.

Jin Yong often fictionalized real historical figures. Fu Kangan was a general related to the powerful Fucha clan but I think the part about him being Qianlong's illegitimate son is totally made up by Jin Yong. It is kind of funny how historical dramas are not supposed to distort history etc but Chinese censors tend to close both eyes when it comes to Jin Yong's stories.

Chen Jialuo is the main protagonist of one of Jin Yong's first novels the Book and The Sword and the head of the Red Flower Society and #1 martial artist at the time. Zhao Banshan, one of the other leaders was the one that rescued Hu Fei from Chen Yu. Sun Gangfeng and Xiao Mei are both in Red Flower Society. Red Flower Society characters tend to pop up in many Jin Yong stories. Fu Kangan is also in Book and the Sword and Hu Fei may also come up there but I am not positive about that.

China's ad market is really weak right now. It just makes it incredibly difficult o make enough money to recover cost of high budget S+ dramas.

You are right, me bad. I just remember an encounter involving Hu Fei and mistaken identity. I thought however in Book and the Sword it was Chen Jialuo and Qianlong who resemble each other? They are supposed to be long lost brothers and Qianlong is actually Han Chinese and not Qing? Which btw I thought was one of Jin Yong's most ridiculous plots....

Season 2 should be about how Tingyao goes about aggressively seducing a younger Tianyi look alike!

Just remembered Hu Fei and Fang Kangán are supposed to bear an uncanny resemblance and are often mistaken for each other. Some adaptations have cast the same actor in both roles. I guess Ma Chunhua may have subliminally had the hots for Hu Fei too!!!
