Tyvm, I am going to start Draw the Line. Very different genre.

Big fan of both lead actors but I am sad to say I give up on this. Hope those of you who are still enjoying it continue to do so.

Yes there are actor pay caps now as a % of budget overall. S/S+ doesn't mean anything it just means their most expensive dramas but there is no hard dollar value associated with it. In recent years absolute S/S+ budget amounts have fallen significantly. Marketing budget is not included in that. That depends on advertising and whether they have performance ads (ie based on view counts). If they have lots of performance ads they will do a lot of marketing to get views. Unfortunately the Chinese ad market is very soft right now, advertisers are not really buying performance ads. It makes no sense for anyone to spend money to do promotion in this environment. Besides into 20th Party Congress on Oct 15th no one can promote anything. All attention should be on the Party and Xi. That's why dramas are dropping without much fanfare or announcement.

The biggest production cost is actor pay. The cast in this is not expensive and there should be a good amount money left over for sets and fight choreography etc etc even if the budget is modest.

Yes it was but I think the treasure story and the four families was mostly in the Flying Fox of Snowy Mountain told in flashbacks. I think in Young Flying Fox the only reference to the treasure is with respect to Tian Guinong's motive to seduce Nan Lan to get the treasure map. He didn't know until the end that MRF hid it in her hairpin. That is how I remember it but I also saw some of the adaptations I could be mixed up. I also read it a long ago and my old books are in my parent's house I don't have them with me to check.

Honestly the fight choreography in this show is phenomenal.

Jin Yong fans often play fantasy martial arts competition between different heroes from the different books. I think Chen Jialuo from The Book and the Sword is usually considered the top martial artist/swordsman. In the context of Langya Bang or the list of Langya, I guess he would be world no 1. Hu Yidao is widely considered to be the top after him (#2) and superior to Miao Renfeng (#3).

The only reason Miao Renfeng was able to scratch Hu Yidao is they didn't just swap swords in their encounter they also agreed to fight using each other's martial arts techniques. That is why Miao Renfeng knows the Hu family martial arts technique. And thus with Hu Yidao's own (superior) technique Miao Renfeng only managed to scratch Hu Yidao with his own sword. Unfortunately that killed Hu Yidao bc of the poison. I know bc it is a sabre it looks blunt, crude and more forceful but Jin Yong described the Hu family sword technique it as the most beautiful and fluid movement a perfect blend of yin and yang (not exact words I read it long ago). In this drama, they kind of try to convey this in how Hu Yidao and Hu Fei begin with that fluid beautiful circular arc with the sabre before any fight begins.
