I am also confused about this and my recollection is the same as yours, which is it happened when Hu Fei was still a child. I suspect it may just be bad editing and the point where MRF meets Nan Lan takes place shortly after MRF saves Hu Fei from that ambush. But it also could be they just want to write MRL out of this version of the story as a love interest for Hu Fei.

Yeah there was a time TVB ruled the world. Nothing today can beat some of those old epic dramas.

Jin Yong stories rarely introduce the leads early on. They usually start with the previous generation.

Well they could change it in this adaption, you never know. Bc the sequel actually ends on a cliff hanger anyway.

I love Lin Yushen he stole the show in Heaven Sword as Yang Xiao as well. I also don’t quite know where they are going with this version but I have to think that opening face off will be paralleled by the ending face off… maybe they left out Miao Routan bc they will follow the novel so that viewers won’t be that upset? Though that is strange bc everyone knows the story anyway.

Sadly I never watched the Ray Liu version of this - I was never able to find it anywhere.

Not in the novels. His main love interest is Miao Roulan but she is not in this novel which is a prequel to Fox Volant of Snowy Mountain. I won’t spoil you what happens to the other two but someone else already mentions it below.

Agree completely - I admit I am low key disappointed about that. I like how they are telling the Miao Renfeng vs Hu Fei story so far. But Miao Roulan is so critical in that I scoured the cast list for her and nope, she is not there... Let's hope its an MDL oversight but I think maybe they will just change the ending for one of the FLs.

Hai Ling looks so lovely and different here I didn't recognise her from L&D.

Yes it is a triangle. Cheng Lingsu likes the ML who likes Yuan Ziyi. But he is not meant to be with either of them his real love interest does not appear in this story. I guess you could say Liang Jie/Yuan Ziyi is the FL.
The first few episodes are pretty good.

Tbh I don't think in reality anyone is really that dumb or has such awful survival instincts. But it did make for good melodrama.

Ah ok, I will check out Inside Man then. I think Deep Lurk is a remake of Lurk. It was one of the hugest espionage dramas China ever made but it is difficult to find a good version to watch nowadays.

Haha..., better late than never! Do you mean the Denzel Washington thriller Inside Man? That was awesome. I like Liu Han a lot, he is the best character in Autumn Cicada. But otherwise the drama is nowhere near as good as Sparrow. I am watching Growling Tiger but its been a bit slow.
