When I read novels I almost never like the drama adaptations. You have to watch with that expectation. The drama didn’t want to really separate them for 5 years in terms of episode count as that tends to frustrate audiences. So we end up getting a rushed reconciliation and glossing through a lot of the character development.

I think she understood and forgave him in her heart from the get go. She went all out to make sure he survived. But what they did destroyed the Empress and she unwittingly played a part of that. She couldn't forgive herself and didn't believe she and Buyi deserved happiness. When she went to the cold palace and Buyi was exiled she believed it was their way to make atonement. Bc the empress was the only innocent bystander in the entire mess. She was only able to forgive herself and Buyi after the empress asked them to choose to be happy on her deathbed.

I watched it a long time ago but I think the 1984 version had pretty good fight scenes. Cheng Lingsu is not a character you had best not like too much.
