Hahaha... I am glad you watched it and liked it. It has so many flaws but I love it so much anyway. Chen Kun is so compelling and I love grey/dark characters so Ning Yi is my all time fav male c-drama character. Ni Ni is my fav Chinese actress. If you haven't already, you may want to watch Quippe Quest's video recaps of it. They are great and I think she was also obsessed with Ning Yi and the show. As for Qing Mu/Bai Ju, he is a great character I read the novel but I dropped the drama bc I just couldn't bear ZDY again after Sparrow which she almost ruined for me. But I like Xu Kai a lot, did you watch him with Bai Lu in The Legends? They have incredible chemistry.

After their confession/kiss, Pan'er is moved to tears by the fact that she found such a great and unrestrained love beyond her wildest imagination. Full of emotions, she goes back into the boat she feels an incomparable sense of gratitude for this fated happiness/blessing that moves her to tears. With shiny eyes she looks at GQF who looks back at her with a similar besotted expression. He had a lonely childhood he never experienced being cherished this way before. They both go into unspoken communication mode of two people who found each other after experiencing extremely lonely and suffering upbringings. Quick and dirty but that is the gist of what the director is asking them to convey.

I think he is a player for sure - Zhang Hao2 and Chi Yannei have already discussed him in that light. And Hao2 warned Yinzhang off in a veiled manner to not take playboys bearing gifts that seriously. She is just too thick to get it. Even if he genuinely comes to care for her, he will never marry her as a proper wife considering her status.

My dad has read most of them. I have his copy of the first two books which I have skimmed parts of. The drama is only about the first 4 volumes which pretty much wraps up the story of the five main characters.
Terrific first impression article that introduces the drama with a balanced first impression. I wish I had read the heads up about the first few minutes before I started watching. The drama has indeed deviated significantly from the novel. Whether that is a good or bad thing remains to be seen. I would also say that sensitive viewers may want to check out the (spoiler) trigger warning tag.

Couldn't agree more re GQF's request to keep Yinzhang out of the loop. Even though I don't think she would deliberately sabotage them, she just lacks judgement and discretion. She is also a rather self obsessed character. Everything is about her and her music and her status. She doesn't consider other people's feelings. If she did, she would have been more discreet about Sanniang's story. She has a lot of growing up to do.
