Yes, he is not perfect by any means. That is true. However, I don't think I missed those things you pointed out, but I have different interpretations and reading of them.
I most certainly disagree that He had mummy issues. Allowing himself to be abused for the sake of his family, because he needed to provide for them. So, his behaviour here is presented as a sacrfice rather than shortcomings.
Yes, he doesn't express himself a lot, but, again, I don't believe it was presented in a negative way. It was more like him being stoic. Btw, especially in Asian cultures and that time, men are not expected to show emotions.

All Gwan Sik has done in the series is working himself to a literal death to provide for his family, and he has never opposed his wife (voluntarily). Couldn't they make him at least smoke or something?
men and women can be supportive and wonderful to their spouse, but through such long life, they also argue, fight, and have some fall out once in a while.
The only time he argued with her is to show her she must be with him.

Kdrama is full of these wonderful and fantastic male lead characters (when the reality it is still a patriachal society, and women have still long way to go. Please read " Kim Ji-young, Born 1982" or "The Vegetarian").
All I read is "Green Flag" and "Green Forest". There is nothing easier than writing one dimensional characters. These characters are bordering on cartoonish.
I accept these male lead in rom-com (check my list), and I enjoy these series, and have fun, because they provide me with escapism and give me warm feelings.
BUT, when I have a realistic series, I want my characters to be real.
Btw..I liked the series a lot, because it has many other great qualities. Gave it a really high score (by my standards) of 8.5, but I don't consider it exceptional. I find many other slice of life better than it.

Have you known someone who supports another person 100% during their entire life?
They never argue with them. They never upset them. They don't have any clear faults.
Yes, there are many people who are wonderfull and share Gwan Sik attributes. But I am over 50 years old, and I am yet to see a person without at least some faults.
Gwan Sik seems to have none.

Am I the only one who thinks that Gwan Sik is badly written character?
This is a realistic drama, so characters should be real people, not fantasy ones.

But, I agree about the last part of your post.

I live in UK, so there are lots of similarties with US.
I don't really know the ins and outs of East Asian entertainment industry, and ultimately I am an outsider, but from what I have seen, I really dislike it.
Even in Hollywood, I stopped watching actors interviews sometime ago. It is very rare that they have something valuable to say. Apart from anecdotes during shooting.
I am far more interested in writers and directors (the REAL force behind the work success or failure)
I wish all actors were like Meryl Streep.
Fantastic actress, but you hardly know anything about her.

That is why I started my original post with stating that I am in minority :)
I also have curiosity, and seek to know a bit more, but only little bit.

I am not doubting the sincerity of these messages.

My problem is with the culture itself.

I love what all these creative people can produce.
And, I have no doubt they put their hearts and souls in their work.
But, I don't see the corelation between my admiration of their work and my desire to know them personally.

I really find it great injustice that IU is nominated while Moon So Ri is not.
I believe she gave far better performance.
But, just like almost all awards across the world, the big names (same thing when The Glory actress won) are the ones who get rewarded unless there is a consciouss decision for more inclusivity.
I am not saying IU didn't do a good job, but I think Monn So Ri was the better one.

I know I am minority, but I really prefer the seperation between artists and viewers.
These things, the various meet and greet, and the increased interaction between artists and viewers create a false sense that you know these people and create false sense of personal attachment.
These are just people doing their job. We enjoy the fruit of their labour. And they get rewarded
for it.
I wish it stays at that.
The celebrity culture and the parasocial relationships just leads to more and more bad stuff.

I am not sure I agree about IU.
I think IU is a good actress, but she is also very wise, and her choices are excellent.
I think the behind the camera team makes her look better than she is.
I think she was excellent in My Mister, because she didn't have to do a lot. However, what she did, was excellent.
Here she was required to do more, and while I liked her, I didn't think she was exceptional.
In my opinion Moon So Ri was much better.

You rated Business Proposal 8.5/10.
Now, for the record, I also gave it 8.5.
But, was that series high quality and artistic drama?
It was cliche as hell. Often slapstic. Followed well trodden expected path. Acting was basic since there was hardly any need for wide range.
But, it was very entertaining, and made us feel good, and have good time.
In other words, it is largely emotional reaction, and it also had high production values.
Don't you think the same can be said about you?
You are so easy to please. Just few good looking actors and silly romantic plot and you give it 8.5/10.
At least this one has a good script, deals with realitstic issues in largely realistic way, has very good acting, and great director.
I really appreciate that you are voicing a different opinion to a very popular series.
But, there is no need to comment on other people.

My Mister is certainly better in almost everything imo.
My Mister writing is certainly superior and deeper.
But, I enjoyed this a bit more than Misaeng.
This one is more relatable because it concentrate a lot on relationships between parents and children. And just general life.

Ratings are subjective. Also there is rating inflation.
It is however a very good drama if you like dramas about life. It is largely realistic (still drama of course).
If you are looking for cutesy romantic fluff, it is not for you.
Personally, I don't think it is best Kdrama, but I can fully understand it, and I am not even upset about it.

It is hard to know for real though.
He is working for Netflix, appearing in a Netflix programm, and it is showed on Netflix channel.

I watched the commentary, everyone was praising everyone. It is expected. Ultimately this is a promotional video, and we shouldn't take everything in it as face value.
It is interesting for some little behind the scene info.
P.S: All that said, I am NOT saying the translation wasn't good. I don't speak Korean. But we shouldn't trust a promotional video too much.

It is strange to give this low score (Cinematography alone deserves few stars)but people are different.
But, I also find it very strange to call this slow with no plot. I agree with you, it is very fast, and if anything, has too much plot.

Last episode: One and half hour of constant tears.
I really liked the series. It is certainly one of the best Kdramas I have ever seen.
I don't consider it the best though(For me-that is My Mister), and I am still not sure if it gets in my personal top 10.
BUT, unlike some other dramas, I FULLY understand why it could be considered as the best, and I will not argue a lot against that.
It was such a fantastic one.
This director is just amazing and phenomenal: Miseang, My Mister, and now WLGYT!
