I don't know why the Chinese of the 70s did it, re: the cover for pillows... but in my country there was a period of extreme rationalization (everything, basically, was on a ration base per-person-need, even textiles.) Maybe they had to use it in order to spare less fabric for the pillow slips (it also involves less detergent and water for washing them, so double economy LOL). It just looks strange. There might be other reasons for it, but since they're all similar, I'm assuming this was how the military base issued their alloted personal inventory items.

He mistook HHL for TXM. He didn't really see her, but his friends pushed him to admit he's in love with a girl, and he said he HAD seen her and knows her, while looking at HHL. She obviously has no idea what he's talking about but TXM does and she thinks he isn't interested in HER anyway.

I can't wait to see him realising who the forbidden library girl actually is, LOL. I wonder how much of his initial interest in HHL came from imagining she's the book girl.

Basically, there are the gangsters (who make do with small time traffic and such and have no hope in heaven to join the army - the get out of hell card for everybody in those times; people like Qi Tian and HeiZi and their gang) and the military base / compound kids, who are just waiting for the next chance to enroll.

To join the army, they had to pass political checks on their families and if anything wasn't admissable, they'd fail (XCS is waiting forever for his chance because his father is dealing with early onset dementia and the political bureau is checking infinitely to see if it affected his military decisions.)

And then there are the REAL gangsters (or the ones who really want to play it dangerously), like that Li guy, who just wants to see everybody fighting.

After a while, the restrictions relaxed a bit and by ep 12 you can see college admissions opening up again, people with "bourgeois" pasts being allowed to enter the army (at least the artistic troupe), and so on, and so forth.

Well, every once in a while I catch myself NOT in the hole, but then I slide right back into the fold LOL.

I like how YGH already grew up a bit and can contain his jealousy (if he has any left), and I like how fast Duan Lei and XCS went from rivals to friends, hahaha, if you can't beat them, join them LOL.

I keep expecting HHL to go wrong the worst one day and make XCS stand up and take measure. I hope it's not something to get in between his friendship with YGH.

TXM is still a bit stiff around them, but she's letting it off a bit now, since she's basically integrated with XCS's family. Poor girl, whenever the dad is mistaking her for HHL or anyone else, you can see her heart breaking.

I am loving Qi Tian and Xiao YanQiu's romance, LOL. He's already all in, and she doesn't see him as a man yet, but as a bodyguard - but she always takes notice where he is or isn't. He's not the hoodlum she thought he was, and she doesn't know how to react yet, but I have faith they'll get there.

The one I don't really like is HongJun. I know he's not at fault directly for HeiZi's eye, but he's a bit too wishy-washy and how Ye Fang acted didn't do him any favours either, poor guy. But he still should stand up for himself every once in a while, you know?

HeiZi's already safely under the thumb of his wife, LOL, RIP hooligan HeiZi hahaha.

I hope XCS gets at least a few years of happy time in the army before the incident shown in the ED song, so that he at least wouldn't have waited for so long for too little.

XCS is that guy you want with you when the going gets tough, the one who will be THERE for everything, good or bad. The peace maker and the pace setter :D

In the pretty/handsome department, maybe Xiao Zhan. But in the graceful cat lasciviousness part of the character, there's absolutely nobody but LYX (no, sorry, not even LJG, though he too is one of the very best).

Maaaybe Ji Sung, but he's a bit too mature now for the rest of the alter-egos. Also, I don't remember, did Ji Sung ever do any historical dramas?! I don't remember any.

I don't, LOL. I don't even like taking pictures of myself. Whenever I go on vacation somewhere and my sibling takes pics, I make sure I'm not in it or they're not allowed to post any of them on social media or elsewhere. They're a "documenter", I'm an "enjoying it in the moment" type.

Which means LYX might be on my sibling's side of things, LOL.

That being said, I have a folder with (let me count) 191 pics and gifs featuring LYX and TTEOTM nice moments LOL. But it's fantasy, I'm allowed.

I only watched her in The Wolf and I think she was dubbed there. But she does have a very nice voice, thank you for clarifying it. I knew XZ's voice, LOL, LRL's voice is good, too.

And you know. Just sayin'. In that scene when she asks him to look up and recognizes ADG's malice, they flash back to ADG flouncing on that roof and the dead-tone-robot voice says: I'm gonna kill all immoral sex so that no more immorals exist.

(I know he doesn't say THAT but LOL that's what I'm hearing). ADG, killing immoral sex from DAY ONE. NOW you get it why all of them almost died virgins?! :D

The best scene of the series, IMHO, when she asks him to look at her and imagine himself strangling her. THAT scene made me survive all the pain that followed.

But she says, in dub... TEN TYE (or TIE, but let's assume TYE LOL) Jin... OMG this is so bad, impossibly bad. I can't even.

I mean it was nostalgic to me because I grew up in a country behind the Iron Curtain in Europe. There's a similar feeling to how the first ep resonates with me. We had a dictatorship too, and actually the 80s were hell for the older generations (political purges, too, also rationed food, special classes on patriotism etc) - but my generation, we were kids, the world was WAY simpler and I loved the winters and a childhood free of all cares (parents wouldn't involve us in anything to mar it). That feeling is - life does go on, in the middle of horror, often unaware of it.

So yeah, it's all in the context.
