Other than more exposure for Asian dramas, I am not too keen on even Netflix getting in the market. Mostly because they're kind of "westernising" kdramas, like Vagabond being primed (but not delivering yet, or at all) for a second season, and let's not even mention Arthdal Chronicles (sooo bitter about that one yet), and I KNOW Kingdom is a huge success, but I am really not the target audience for this kind of stories (and would very much like not to have mashups of Western supernatural things with original Asian supernatural things, it's the difference that I love).
And now even Disney+ is getting in on the big pie?
Listen... I am all for Asian dramas getting recognition, and more money for new projects, and international fandoms for dramas and/or actors getting wider etc. But I would LOVE to see them use the already existing strengths of the Asian dramas, not trying to cookie-cutter them into things that Western general audiences would like to watch (beginning with short-er/ish episodes, multiple seasons for the same story, ever dilluting a tale until it's all milked out, etc. )
Let's enjoy the differences instead...
It's my greatest fear that once Western production companies and/or networks start realizing that Asian dramas do sell, and sell well, we'll see less of what was interesting and new and original (for a Westerner anyway) and instead get a more "wider" audience thing where Asian and Western influences are so mixed up there's not a lot of originality remaining.
And sadly, I do NOT trust Disney+ with anything they're into. Disney in general is a money-making machine, and no matter what they're claiming in their PR stunts, they're one of the most despicable companies around.
I realize this comes out as a whine about how I don't like changes and don't want to see them... but I seriously am biased against Western (mostly Anglo sphere) media, and at this point in time, nothing much could happen to un-bias me.
IMHO it would have invalidated his whole personality if he did. But not for lack of trying - he came THIS close…
With that man as his father, I seriously doubt that his mother actually ran away. I expect she was his father's first victim, as is usual for some serial killers. It's also probable DHS was somehow involved in her killing - his father used him as an alibi in hunting Mi Sook, too. DHS could have been an accomplice... After all, his father told BHS that he had tried to mould DHS in his image and failed. Add to that that there were the "correct" number of fingernails even though Mi Sook didn't actually die.
I think the victim who provided the first nail was DHS's mother and DHS might have witnessed (parts of) it.
Anyone else love the show but was a bit disappointed when you realized that ML never actually killed a single…
IMHO it would have invalidated his whole personality if he did. But not for lack of trying - he came THIS close to killing his former room mate (the one who opened the restaurant and was later killed by the taxi driver). And all I can say is that KMJ (the reporter) was really REALLY lucky he became needed in the nick of time when DHS was calculating the risks of taking him out.
The question was never if he COULD do it, but if he WOULD. He was all out going for BHS's throat, no problem, in the final eps. He just never got all the right conditions met in the previous fly-bys, LOL.
But fear not - there's no answer to where his mother went to, why he lost all memories of before being 10 years old, and how did his father try to make him into his own image. Use your imagination, he just might've done something that sent him for a spin in his childhood...
I couldn't resist... Had to finish it. What do I do now? Please advise.
If it wasn't for the special episode, I'd've broken something. BUT. It's a HEA, right? I'm taking it as a HEA and I don't care if they get to live in the mountains eating ice and snow forever.
Also, don't think I didn't catch that "forever fighting" hint, show. I DID read the extra with the fighting resulting in THAT, LOL. So I am pretty certain WHAT they're fighting about :D
Awwww, Cheng Ling's little daughter is so PRECIOUS. Such a cute smile! For a ten-second showup, that little girl is going to be remembered (by me anyway).
I am absolutely amazed this show made it past censorship. How on Earth did they do it?! All those hugs and clear expressions of affection, all that obvious flirting and yearning... I don't need any more than this to be completely happy.
I am also heartbroken over Wei Ning and Ah Xiang... Poor kids. And that venomous Master! He deserved what he got and more. I just wish they'd have kept that final confrontation scene after the fight with Scorpion as it was in the novel - it felt even more heartbreaking for me - but I'm happy with this version too.
Strangely, I'm also sad over Scorpion King's demise. I still don't know what makes him tick, but that scene with Zhao Jing in the final episodes, where he's confessing his total devotion and complete hatred for his "father" is amazing. That character is probably my 4th favourite in the drama, right after the MLs and Cheng Ling.
Sooooo satisfying. So glad it went like this, basically non-butchered (also non-censored at ALL, LOL). So happy with the outcome.
This leaves me with high hopes for Immortality - if they're allowed to push the boundaries so much... imagine what could happen with that story.
(Final note: I am an Untamed fan, and didn't try to compare these two dramas at all, except in the beginning when a lot of the sets seemed similar between the two dramas. But then, given there's a certain esthetics in xianxia/wuxia and probably certain pre-built sets most dramas get to use, it's just a coincidence, IMHO. As for the story and acting - I love both dramas in different ways and won't try to do a side-by-side comparison, because they don't have much in common, except for being gorgeously shot, having good plots, good music, satisfying endings and giving me a lot of pleasure in watching!)
See you in the Immortality thread, whenever it comes!
Well, that scene in particular wasn't a shocking surprise because I'd spoiled myself on the raws and could kind of guess what was going on. But I'm pretty sure it's a plot and that WKX and Scorpion cooked something together so that they could go at Zhao Jing's throat.
Which makes me say it - Scorpion King is really interesting. He's both jealously in love with his step-father's appreciation, and also hating his bones to the core. I don't know what's driving him, but he's certainly twisted and most intriguing. ZJ won't know what hit him when the Scorpion King decides it's time to strike.
Poor ZZS... almost fainting when he realized it was true and WKX is "actually" gone... I want to give him a hug. He's going to go all Chingachgook-on-Magua (complete with The Gael soundtrack) on the Five Lakes Alliance, isn't he?
"The world is not important, my soulmate is." That's the spirit!! You go get'em, ZZS!!
I feel like there are bits and pieces - or scenes - missing from time to time, like they shrunk the timeline a bit too much, or edited so that it provided more shocks instead of a linear plot succession. Like - it's obvious there's been a lot of time between WKX going mad and being found by Lord Seventh and his Shaman, and then him managing to contact the Window of Heaven guys, arranging the prison break, gathering all the Ghosts that were already in Scorpion King's keeping, dealing with the SK etc. The crunch is huge. But I don't really mind it - I mean, I'm here for WKX's expressions and flirting and for ZZS's obvious and unconditional love.
Only 4 eps and a bit to go... I don't want this to end so soon. I need to pace myself a bit T_T
is "Lord Seventh" recquired reading in order to get a grab of the actual relationship between the Prince Jin and ZZS?
ZZS said that the Prince poisoned Lord 7th (unless I misplaced him), I guess he didn't die if he showed up in the series. And is the Grand Wizard the same person as the Shaman in the later part of the novel? (haven't read the novel, just browsed the last half that I could easily access and there was talk of a Shaman, but I thought he was dead already somehow. )
And is Lord Seventh also a danmei story? (with a HEA, hopefully). The NU blurb isn't too rich in details.
I had to take a break because they're so CUTE together!!!! They're basically married right now. The romance doesn't need anything more sexier than this, and I keep falling in love with both of them all over again.
So cute! Gong Jun's expressions are perfection itself. I hope he gets more recognition than before and we'll get to see him more in the future.
EDIT OMG just watched the original take, with their own voices - so CUUUUUUTE!!!! I want more of this, do we get more of this later on???
didn't Off throw his bracelet away in the beginning of episode 9, and it fell somewhere in the water? How come he had the bracelet for the rest of the episodes? Did I blink and miss something?
Honestly, it seems as if you’ve been hating on this show since day one. You’ve complained about everything…
I originally did not want to reply to such an impolite message, but then if nobody tells you when you're on the wrong, how could you learn to notice it?
Please do not assume what I think or do not think about this drama. If I like it or not, my comments are just as valid as anyone else's. If they're not to your liking, please do not bother to read them. For the purpose I have used the spoiler tag so that people uninterested do not actually have to see the text and that is all the length I'm willing to go to in order to keep things civil.
As for why I am disappointed with the drama, I've stated my reasons and if you disagree with them, it really is not my problem.
Apparently the show has a sci fi tag to it. You never know what the writer will show next lol. I'd have defended…
I don't even mind scifi, I actually like it... if it makes sense. This drama isn't trying very hard LOL.
Yes, the bait and switch is what made me raging mad in the first eps, once I realized it didn't mean to be a true thriller with a logical plot and not a show of smoke and mirrors and retconning scenes instead...
Shame on me, I'd watched the writer's previous drama Black, and LOVED it, until the very last few eps, where she didn't know what to make of it and just slapped an illogical twist on it all. That should have warned me.
Now, though, it has become kind of hilarious. Yesterday I couldn't help laughing out loud for real when the brain surgery "twist" came up. It'll probably be explained away somehow, but seriously... ANYone with the LEAST understanding (and I include here fictional set-ups) on organ and/or cell transplant would just throw their hands up in despair at that bait LOL. I more expected something like massive-brain-injury-triggers-psycopatic-personality-traits (that has actually happened in real life; for example there has been someone in the US in the 19th century who survived a complete traumatic brain frontal lobe destruction and his personality completely changed, Google Phineas Gage if you're curious.) But we can't be too logical :D
I had really high hopes for this drama, as LSG has been a favourite for some time, and I was hoping for something better than Vagabond (at least that one was making sense in an action-thriller kind of way, despite the open ending) for him. And the second ML also raised a lot of hopes. But nope. His plot line is also extremely unlikely...
Too bad. But it's still a good source of laughs :D
Seriously, (partial) brain transplant? And he doesn't even need immunosuppressives either? HAHAHA! I guess it's…
Isn't this what everybody else is doing though? This thread is full of speculations, which is exactly what the writer intended with this drama. What's the big deal? Do I have to only speculate on things everybody else finds fantastic?
I DO expect the writer to twist it yet AGAIN by the next few episodes... but it IS fun to laugh at it. Particularly if it turns out to be close to the drama truth.
Honestly, it seems as if you’ve been hating on this show since day one. You’ve complained about everything…
Please don't tell me what I should or not drop. Plus, I am not hating on the drama, I am disappointed with what could have been, and by now it's turned from being mad at the waste to being entertained by it. What's the problem? I AM using a spoiler tag, nobody's forcing anybody to READ the text hidden underneath it.
Hi.. I dont think the story switched the focus on the romance side, it just started to move on to the bigger picture…
A horror movie director? That makes so much sense. And we also get the killer (ghoul, whatever he is supposed to be) killing with a smouldering look/stance and then that lateral black eye swipe LOL. I don't know if you've ever watched the original V or the remake, but he reminds me of the lizards LOL. I keep expecting him to get a bifurcated tongue air taste :D
This has now reached The Darkness Supernatural levels of stupid, LOL.
Seriously, (partial) brain transplant? And he doesn't even need immunosuppressives either? HAHAHA! I guess it's parts of the frontal lobe(s), in order to have some memories, but the writer'll probably invent some more genetic accidents to get the story moving along.
What, are they now going to be identical twins or have a pretty close DNA too? No, wait, it's because of the psycho gene right? That gene not only will make it unnecessary to use medication in order to not reject tissue from the donor, but ALSO transfer all (or at least some) select memories - like I don't know, the killer's childhood. And oh, his crimes too.
How convenient.
LOL.
And let's not even visit the fact that the surgery is supposedly done by someone who's been in prison for more than 20 years, and didn't get much practice in neurosurgery in the mean time, or had access to speciality literature, or seen how new meds or tools were used... He is just the type of self-taught genius that does that.
While he's at it, why not add eidetic memory and turn the subject's intellect up a thousand levels, too? :D
Other than that - the kid's body, if he ever died, is probably in Ba Reum's flower pots or flower rond, and let's not forget the missing supposedly dead daughter who's now either bumbling about not a care in the world, OR has left her only possession in this world to the girl who tied her up.
Which is also the girl who baited the woman in the first episode, probably. Coincidence?
Not in this show.
This is entertainingly, catastrophically stupid LOL.
Edit, wait I remembered KMC!!! I had such hope for him in the first episodes. WHY exactly is he so certain he's going to get in the SAME prison as the HH, even if he is convicted of the falsely confessed crime? (Given this show, he'll end up in the HH's cell as his cellmate too :D)
And now even Disney+ is getting in on the big pie?
Listen... I am all for Asian dramas getting recognition, and more money for new projects, and international fandoms for dramas and/or actors getting wider etc. But I would LOVE to see them use the already existing strengths of the Asian dramas, not trying to cookie-cutter them into things that Western general audiences would like to watch (beginning with short-er/ish episodes, multiple seasons for the same story, ever dilluting a tale until it's all milked out, etc. )
