There's some pretty nice shoes in this movie. I can't lie. Shoes and eyebrows.
Too many scalpels.
It's been a long while since I've seen the Korean one so I can't quite compare, but I think they're about equal in terms of quality but they both have a different 'feel' about them. I think the Korean one was a bit darker.
I gotta say though, I can't decide if I'm impressed or disappointed they didn't make it into a romance. Maybe I'm both. Maybe I'm just weird like that.
As someone who is BARELY a fan of Super Junior, I actually really really enjoyed Attack on the Pin-Up Boys. I was having fun the entire time.
I tend to stay a bit away from idol dramas, but sometimes they sneak up on me. Like Jang Geun Suk... he was an actor, but then somewhere down the line his dramas deteriorated into idol dramas.
I actually thought Innocent Lilies sounded like an interesting drama plot, but when I saw it was all idols I decided not to watch it. Maybe I'll add it to my to-watch list, give it another go?
I do plan on checking out that Cross Gene drama. Didn't realize Takuya was an idol, and after seeing him in The Lover I'd check out another thing with him in it in a second.
HIGH-KEY PISSED that they didn't end it the same way the Chinese one did.
This one has really attractive people in it, no doubt, but imo the writing was unfortunately a bit of a mess in comparison to the original. Lee Jun Ki though... /Swoon
I legitimately cannot believe there are this many good looking guys in one drama??? Like, I'm entirely too single for this. I've having a dang heart attack every few seconds over these men. And Ye Hua's long hair just has me really shook. In a good way. /swoon
That lil clip of Ye Hua lowering the MC onto a bed in the intro gets me every time, oh my god;
Edit: At this point I'm really suppressing my habit of just spam commenting, but like, this snakey guy is so freaking cute with his little crush on a mortal I'm gonna die
Edit: OH MY GOD THE PITY PLOY THIS GUY IS SO FREAKING CUTE I'M GRINNING LIKE A MANIAC
EDIT: "You always climb into bed in the middle of the night, and with my injuries being serious as they are, I'm naturally unable to stop you..."
YOU ADORABLE DORK
Everybody tryna hitch Feng Jiu up with Dijun... so freaking hilarious. I can't.
OMG SOUND THE BELLS THEY'RE GETTING MARRIED. Bless their hearts. Bless my heart. Bless everyone's heart. Life is beautiful.
First of all, Ye Hua disappearing was so sad because he'll probably be gone for like a year and she'll think he betrayed her and yada yada yada tragedy.
On the other hand, Feng Jiu screwing things up and Dijun just looking so thoroughly amused and captivated by her is my new drug. So perf. Their interactions are so adorable, especially considering he's like, an anomaly of space and time? Nobody even knows what he is? rofl
Now that I've watched the first 15 episodes in one day, I need to go to bed. /sigh
AND I'm back, because them bowing to each other because they're going to become parents ripped my will power to shreds. If something happens to this kid I'm going to start a rebellion
OMG Feng Jiu getting hurt by the phoenix and Dijun going into full protective mode ahhhh I LIVE FOR THIS STUFF
EDIT: SU JIN NEEDS TO GO. SHE NEEDS TO GO NOW.
Okay, Dijun saving Feng Jiu from the pagoda guardian did me in. I love when they win the cold-hearted guy over. Also, I LOVE his expressions. His eyebrow thing? His eyes? Man. Dijun is a hot deity thing.
FATHERHOOD YE HUA AND GARDENING YE HUA IS ALL I NEED IN THIS LIFE.
In a way I wanted vin character to be the main uuuuurgh second lead or something syndrome
Kept scrolling till I found a comment that shared my feels. Glad I found it! He's my fave! And he doesn't even think that she liked him back when she totally did;;; hurts my heart
I just started and am only on episode 4 but I'm already all kinds of angry and emotional over this drama. This bitch of a cousin, I swear;;; Tearing apart my otp
This is much better than the other HGD series imo. I watched the other one and x-ed it out in the first scene…
I was gonna mention Iljimae, but considering HGD and Iljimae are two of my absolute favourites I wasn't sure if they were actually similar, or if they were just similar in that I like them both a lot. Lol.

I guess in terms of how they portion fantasy and reality into the mix it's similar, although I haven't seen Hwarang so I can't speak for that. I'd say it's more fun than those however. Slightly less melodrama.
How to put it...
It's not OVERLY modern, but it certainly has a twist that makes it clear it isn't faithfully historical. The best way I could describe it is that it feels more like an anime or cartoon, or like a story of Hong Gil Dong the way that the story would actually be told, considering it IS based off of a piece of fiction as opposed to an actual historical event- it feels fantastical, and it tells stories in fairly distinct arcs as Hong Gil Dong and his band grow and progress while still also telling a more serious and epic-feeling story around the prince and monarchy that is more in line with your traditional historical.
If you give it the same suspension of disbelief you would any over-exaggerated fairy tale, I think you're in the right state of mind to watch it.

I gotta second what nastou said. Hong Gil Dong was ridiculous in the first episode, and it sort of continues that mild eccentricity and fun fusion-sageukness a little bit throughout, but it is a pretty great drama imo. It may feel a little bit dated nowadays but it's definitely worth giving another try.
This drama made me happy. The very ending was just so ridiculously heart warming on all fronts. I was already a fan of Jung Joon Young, first because of his music and then because of 2D1N, but seeing him in this role was just the end of me. So adorable.
This movie was trying so hard to be artsy and minimalistic, it forgot to tell an actual story. Whoops. At least the bagpipes at the end were pretty jammin'.

Gotta say, I'm LOVING the music in this. Not sure if it always fits the scene perfectly, but I'm jamming to basically every track.
