This drama is getting so entertaining!! I'm up to ep 23. It's so hilarious how the bro's are addressing each other "bro-in-law", a much intimate title.
My long hypothesis below....without reading the novel.
The masked man and Susha traitor: Kill FSG and/or villainize his name so the Emperor and court won't pass the throne to him. This way, his younger brother would then be the Emperor.
Xia Jing Shi was to help kill FSG, and in return, the masked person and his people/faction would help him eliminate his brother so that he could become Emperor of Jinxiu himself.
Zhuang Family is obviously involved in this. The Second Prince of Susha is half Zhuang, so obviously Prime Minister Zhuang being his grandfather and the Empress of Susha as his mother obviously would want him to be the Emperor instead of FSG. Although, as of now, we don't know yet if the Second Prince is involved in the scheming as well.
Murong so far hasn't shown up again since one of the earlier episodes. However, given that he's listed in a rather higher up on the cast list, I feel there's more to him. Much has been suspected that he would be the masked man. I believe he's in cohort with the Prime Minister, maybe he was promised a higher rank, wealth, and title to his family name once Zhuang's descendant rules Susha.
Prime Minister Zhuang (via the masked man) and Xia Jing Shi may have agreed to land parcel cession, but more importantly, no more war between the two countries after they take over the thrones. Prime Minister knew his grandson didn't have the aptitude to rule Susha if there was long term war with JinXiu so this would be a reasonable path to take.
Ep 14, the battle between father and son the last 10 minutes is so awesome!!! FSG stood his ground, unfazed, challenged the Emperor, with defiance and, mind you, that infamous glare.

That's how I felt the first 10 episodes, but it does get better. Not sure how far along you are. I don't feel the chemistry either, but William Chan really does a great job as HaoMing, especially when he's starting to act silly.

I highly doubt it's the little brother. He just had his "coming of age" event, meaning he's not seasoned enough to plan something this big and complex involving high ranking officials from another country.
It's definitely not the queen herself behind the mask. She may have underlyings doing her bidding, but she wouldn't go around as the masked villain.
DOn't think it's the prime minister nephew. He's smart, but I feel he's not FSG's level, meaning, he would have been exposed much sooner.
For someone so fierce and daring, witnessing such a scene is simply a joy.
