I am not sure where you getting 'villainous' ML from.
Even the novel SYS was not evil or wicked. Cunning- yes. Scheming- yes. But his values are always right and just. Morally gray... Is he even that gray? What did he really do that is so bad? He steals powers from WeiJiu but WJ is not a 'good person' either. And WJ walked into his trap because he had no good intentions of his own and was going to kill them all. Its not like SYS siphons powers from his innocent disciples to power himself which is more than I can say for some of the leaders of the so called 'righteous sects'.
The whole 'ML is more villain than the villain' is just a marketing joke. I don't see that SYS is ever a true villain, who will put his selfish needs above the others. He is inclined to retaliate violently but its always after being provoked. Perhaps in the past before MQG he was headed down that predestined demonic path, but she already saved him from that since the story began.
But I look forward to hearing why it is you considered him a villain being 'whitewashed'. Because maybe I am too blinded by his handsome face and cannot see the reality loool
