At that time Xu Kai himself didn't know he would be in the drama. THERE ARE NO FINAL CASTING DECIDED FROM THE INVESTOR YET WHEN YU ZHENG DID THAT AT THE CONFERENCE. Simply because Yu Zheng likes the pairing himself it was him who PROMISED by himself to CP fans that it will be these two for main roles, he is nothing but empty promise because he is the boss yes but he has no power to decide on the casting, it was the investor who provide the money hold the power to decide the final cast and in the end they decided on Xu Kai and Wu Jinyan. It was never set on Xu Kai and Bai Lu, it was Yu Zheng EMPTY promise. Bai Lu wasn't the one originally in this role, and she wasn't robbed off this role. And then when it was clear that Yu Zheng just simply sprout words but hold no power because what he promised couldn't be done it was her and CP fans got angry because they believed Yu Zheng's lies and they start selling around this pitiful story of her being robbed off the role and adding more unfounded claim about the casting situation. It wasn't a matter of ok or not okay for either Bai Lu or Wu Jinyan to be the FL the casting decision is up to the investor, but at least Wu Jinyan fans didn't go crazy attacking all Xu Kai's FL. Needless to say Mango TV and Hunan TV is very unhappy with Yu Zheng, they have remove any trace of him involving in this drama. Do your research rather than just believing crazy CP fans. Also you display same traits as crazy CP fans when you call Wu Jinyan "this woman" she is an actress, a person with a name learn to be decent human being and respect people. These people are actors and actress their job is to act not fulfilling your shipper fantasies.

Bai Jue and Qing Mu are supposed to be awkward though? But there are some scenes shot where I think director or producer just put in the one that Xu Kai and Zhou Dongyu was experimenting with the scene as I saw it in the behind the scene they attempt several ways of delivering the scene but the shots that they chose to include in the final cut is the experimenting shot that might explain the inconsistent to character.

Actually believe it or not despite his boyish face, c-netz/industry impression of Xu Kai is he is born in 85-90 batch, so he is one of the few young actors who look and can act mature to match the older actress, hence why he was often paired with older actress. If you look at Douban and weibo comments many people actually surprise he is born in 1995 they thought he is older. Maybe due to his breakout role as Fu Heng where he played until the middle age so popular dramas put that impression on him for audience.
