I think if you look at the scene again you would see even after Wu Huan told him he didn't really believe her and still went with the intention of convincing him, finally when he confronted Tianqi it was only after the last minute that he saw the soldiers around him died that he finally and reluctantly stabbed Tianqi and as you said he still save him in the end. True, because Bai Jue is a loner since he was a kid, even when Tianqi insulted him purposely because Tianqi was heart-broken being rejected by Shang Gu, Bai Jue still didn't do anything as if in understanding how Tianqi usually behave. Yeah totally Bai Jue cared about all three of them and they all know it as well.

Oh there is a lot! Whenever I saw comments bashing Bai Jue I went to the ALP Douban group because they have nothing but deep discussion glowing praises about Bai Jue's character there. And Xu Kai's fans did a public poll in Weibo which character that made them start being a fan of Xu Kai, Bai Jue won by miles!

The only Xianxia drama that I think could come close is Love and Destiny have you check this out?

Ancient Love Poetry in my opinion has the best CGI out of many Cdramas I've seen and I'm glad to see they posted this beautiful video on how the VFX team did their layering

Exactly that's what matters, a story need to be delivered with good portrayal of the characters to carry the flow of the plot which Zhou Dongyu and Xu Kai did excellently. I honestly never get how people watch drama based on looks only because I never noticed those, what pull me in is if actors and actress performed their role so well that makes me intrigued with the actor/actress.

Yeay! ALP gets 9/10. The Legends could have been good if the editing didn't became like a mess at the end. I am also repeating for how many times already and I thought on the nth time of watching I won't cry anymore... apparently I still do XD

Yes! What's important is that both portrayed their role so well that they overturned people's skepticism on their match just basing on looks. As Xu Kai's fan, it's really annoying when fans like this came who only like him for his face and will only like the FL if they "match" his looks and then insult the FL.

Oh yes absolutely! It's my point actually about the aspect that like this drama chose to deliver this plot, Tianqi have his own thoughts and he is not evil by any means but at the instance of this plot audience didn't know what he is up to neither did the other three but Bai Jue, Zhi Yang and Shang Gu knows him for so long and they are very close together so I like that the drama still strong-footed on this logic and make the plot writings as they don't just accused Tianqi and believed that he turned evil in a misunderstanding trope like other dramas would have use the normal dialogue of misunderstandings for dramatic plot but in this drama Bai Jue actually answered Shang Gu that he agreed and understand Shang Gu's concern and reasoning that Tianqi would not just do this but still this is a big crisis and he wish Tianqi would talk to them first rather than assuming on his own (considering at this moment Bai Jue didn't know about the Tribulation of Chaos)

LOL I understand, I hope you can find it interesting upon further watching to satisfy your crave but even if you don't, it's okay but you would have to wait until at least end of this year for his new drama haha

Like when Tianqi stole the chief feather power, and Shang Gu let go of him when the bell rang signaling that Tianqi has escaped, Shang Gu and Bai Jue is very honest with each other, when Shang Gu said her worries that Bai Jue and Zhi Yang might punish Tianqi by cutting out his powers and cast him to nether world and Bai Jue said sternly but softly that he and Zhi Yang would never do that they just need to know the truth because they also knows Tianqi well.

When Bai Jue found out the things that Tianqi stole and what he intend to do that he got angry but Shang Gu said Tianqi would never do such terrible thing intentionally, instead of Bai Jue replied saying but the evidence is there, Bai Jue said he also knows that but he also wish that Tianqi would tell them what is on his mind so that they can at least work a plan on what to tell the people in the realm. Clear conversations like this really makes me satisfied because often drama would just pretend like having an honest conversation is not an option.

Upon rewatching I noticed more scenes like there are no unnecessary misunderstandings between Shang Gu, Bai Jue, Tianqi, Zhi Yang and Yuemi

Xu Kai has actually collaborated with two of my favourite actress (Li Yitong and Zhou Dongyu) so I'm satisfied for now haha but I do wish to see him work with Nini and Bu Guan Jin next

The "really bad reviews" your friend saw on trend are the followings that appeared within 15 minutes of the drama premiere with first 8 episodes

1. Zhou Dongyu's the female lead acting is poor (a repeated detailed edited videos of Zhou Dongyu's ugly shot that happened in more than 30 minutes in episode 1 and another shot from episode 2)

2. Xu Kai is fat and acting is bad (another detail videos of some scenes that happened in episodes that would only released in 2nd week of broadcasting start)

3. Zhou Dongyu is ugly (various edited shot from episodes that didn't even release yet)

4. The CGI is bad (a single shot of a cgi glitch blown out and they trended it)

5. Trended "Book fans hated this adaptation not being respectful"

6. CGI is too western disrespecting the authentic Chinese aesthetic pride. (trying to create national issues)

All of these "reviews" videos happened within 15 minutes of the drama premieres yet some of the "reviews" trended includes of episodes that wasn't even released yet not to mention these "bad reviews videos" need to be edited, gather materials and posted so that means they had to at least prepare it half an hour before the posting which happened 15 minutes after the drama were made available. So it's up to you what do you think of this "bad reviews" are justified by a real viewer or by a big crowd of people who is organized. Just some backgrounds, Zhou Dongyu despite being critically acclaimed actress in China, is one of the most criticized actress just because netizens think she is not beautiful according to China's beauty standard so they don't think she deserve those big awards despite never even watching her movies. So they always seeking ways to nail her to the pillar of shame.

I like to see their compilation of fight even and planning to make one myself, their relationship is really one that represent typical siblings relationship lol

Indeed this plot gave the audience of feelings serve her right she deserve it, it balance out Bai Jue's behavior towards Shang Gu that audience may perceive as harsh. Also yeah I wish the ending is longer or if they wanted to do the current ending I wish they don't change the wedding part making Wu Huan and Jing Zhao getting away with things. It is my pleasure! I'm glad to know that! As I hope this drama reached more audience as the acting alone deserve a recognition. It is one of my top dramas as well, and I like discussing it whether it's a positive or negative aspect. For me a good dramas is where the acting is great that they can even deliver the storyline with some flaw scripts but still can draw in audience into their emotional journey and Ancient Love Poetry gave me that.
