My biggest fear in the future......

Watching No Other Choice felt like a two-hour-long panic attack. It’s a Park Chan-wook masterpiece, but man, it is stressful. Seeing the protagonist, Man Su, work so hard for 25 years only to get tossed aside like literal scrap paper was way too real. The way he tries to climb back up the social ladder by basically "eliminating" his job competition is some of the darkest, most twisted black comedy I’ve seen in a while. It’s one of those movies that makes you laugh, but then you immediately feel bad for laughing because the desperation is so palpable.

As someone who is about to graduate and head into the workforce, this movie tapped into my deepest fears. I kept thinking about what the world is actually going to look like after I get my degree. The film shows this unforgiving, soul-sucking corporate system where you’re just a number, and honestly, it’s the ultimate "worst-case scenario" that I pray never happens in real life. Seeing the threat of AI and international acquisitions lurking in the background made the whole thing feel like a horror movie disguised as a thriller.

Incessant Product Placement

Whew! I've been on the verge of giving up my Korean Drama addiction because, so far, so many new series have been duds. At first I thought LOVE NEXT DOOR was better, but now I'm having second thoughts.

During the first half of this series, the male and female leads–played by two well known heart throbs--were mostly believable, especially Jung Hae-in who can make anything work.

The plot lurched off the rails in a few places, with enough crying and carrying on to deplete Korea-'s entire stock of menthol tear sticks. The parents, especially Seok-ryoo's mother acted crazy and abusive (and not in a fun way).

The actress who played Mo-Eum was winsome and likable, but she overacted. I liked her, so I liked the character. But I couldn't warm toward Seok-ryoo in this drama--she was just too arbitrary and cruel.

Let me just mention one other minor character, the ML’s mother. This woman loved her son, but she allowed someone else to raise him. She loved her husband, but she never learned to cook. Instead she’s had a wonderful, professional life–traveling the world and learning about other cultures. And how does this series present this unique woman? As someone who deserves punishment, someone who’s about to lose it all--friends, family, and her marriage. The subtext is clear–if insulting to modern women.

The incessant, in-your-face product placement disappointed me the most. I thought episode 11 was bad, but in episode fourteen, one of the leads actually shows the label on the can to the camera and says, "I had no idea alcohol tasted this good."

There were at least three major bouts of alcohol consumption (and product placement) in episode 14. Apparently, the writers aren't even trying to be subtle.

Nothing against alcohol here, but I really resent the cheap commercialization. Hey Studio Dragon (and you too Netflix)--please don't go down this path.

Why are Jung Hae-in and Jung So-min who are both incredible actors damaging their artistic reputations this way?

Throughout, the writers created trivial excuses and pretexts for various main characters to go on a bender. Whatever the problem–minor spats, bad news–hey, let’s all get drunk. It just seemed like the writers were looking for any chance to push the products.

Still...until the whole series fell apart toward the end, it was mostly watchable. The leads did a good job and hit all the right notes for a good, solid romance. I wasn't looking for high art, but the constant (and obvious) viewer manipulation ruined this one for me.

Everybody needs somebody

I just watched this at the movie theatre and it left quite the impression on me.

My critisism
The story telling in itself was very westernized, if you watched a lot of Japanese movies you will know. It's mostly in the little details or how things are resolved in the end. Japanese movies of this kind tend to leave more open endings and room for interpretation. I won't say more since it would be a spoiler.
Despite all the characters -apart from Brendan Fraser's- being Japanese, their actions did not seem very Japanese a lot of the time (especially in regards to skinship) and it felt simply strange how good their English was, even if they are in a big city like Tokyo. For example Brendan's character made the effort to speak Japanese really well (and great respect to the actor himself for doing that!), but then suddenly people switch back to perfect English, as if there is no need for him to even learn the language. Maybe it was done on purpose, but still it makes the characters less genuine to me, unless you gave them a backstory with a good reason for their perfect English.

What I enjoyed
The heartfelt interactions between Brendan's character and his clients and his reactions after he realized he can do something for them and they also help him in a way. The moments with the little girl Mia and the old actor Kikuo Hasegawa really made me feel for them.
The movie itself pays respect to a lot of aspects of Japanese culture and Shinto belief, but I'd still see it as an outside perspective. We take a glimpse at Japan through the eyes of a foreigner, who has lived there for quite some time, but is still trying to figure out a lot of things.
And can I say I just love Brendan Fraser as an actor?! You can see he put a lot of effort into portraying this character and trying to help viewers understand the motives behind people using these services.

In the end to me the message was:
Everybody needs somebody who's on their side.
I believe everywhere in the world people are in need of companionship, it just seems only in the Japanese culture this longing is being expressed in the unusual way of renting a person. But just because it is a service that comes with a financial transaction, does it mean it's not real?

Overall a quiet, sometimes funny, and very touching story about people and loneliness.

Dark, but satisfying

There are some hard to watch moments in this movie, but it's worth every missed heartbeat. Kim Deok Hui (Ra Mi Ran) and Kwon Jae Min/Mr Son (Gong Myung) are excellent in their roles as believable human beings that show bravery and determination in a very dangerous situation. This movie is a 10 out of 10.
Good job to everyone involved, in front of and behind the camera.

A movie that shows the seasons in life passing beautifully

I started off with this movie with zero expectations but I really liked the trailer, so I had decided to just watch it. Half the movie has passed and I find myself in tears. Its such a beautiful story. Doesn’t just encompasses the main characters but involves the side casts well with their individual short and sweet storylines. That’s the beauty of the movie along with the beautiful scenic moments from the village, importance of family eating and celebrating festivals together and how its not always necessary to be related to someone by blood but rather likeminded well wishers who get along well and become families.
Its a sweet slice of life movie with a happy ending and even the comic timings are well portrayed. The entire cast fitted just right with their characters and I am so glad I just gave this one a watch. Recommended for everyone who loves a good heartfull movie to watch sometimes that don’t require you to think so much but rather just put on this and enjoy a 2 hours of roller coaster ride of emotions all together!

From Subversion to Confusion: The Witch Part 2 Falls Apart

Thanks to the extremely high bar set by the first film, The Witch: Part 1 – The Subversion, this sequel ends up failing miserably.

The first movie worked because it had a strong balance: a known actor like Choi Woo-shik and a breakout performance by Kim Da-mi, backed by tight writing and character-driven storytelling. Part 2 has none of that balance.

This film is packed with big Korean names—Park Eun-bin, Jin Goo, Lee Jong-suk—yet somehow manages to waste all of them. Why? Because they were shoved into the story without any real purpose.

Lee Jong-suk feels like he’s present purely because he’s Lee Jong-suk. He contributes nothing meaningful to the plot and disappears without impact.

Jin Goo, a genuinely talented actor, is reduced to a comic, idiotic villain, which completely undermines his presence.

Casting powerhouse actors means nothing when the script doesn’t know what to do with them.

And then there’s the biggest disappointment: Shin Shi-ah, the supposed star of the show. Unfortunately, she doesn’t come anywhere close to Kim Da-mi’s performance from the first movie. With expectations already sky-high, her portrayal feels flat, making the entire film come off as below mediocre.

The writing is full of fake, illogical scenes that break immersion completely. One scene perfectly sums up the problem:

Jin Goo’s character and his goons are brutally beating his own niece and nephew—pure evil behavior. Suddenly, when FL appears on the rooftop ready to jump, everyone becomes deeply concerned for her safety.
What?
You’re ruthless criminals, but now you’re worried like she’s your own daughter? Pick a lane. You can’t abandon your villain role just to force emotional drama. It’s lazy writing.

The most ironic part? Park Eun-bin’s acting level is clearly above everyone else, yet even she can’t save the film. Her presence only highlights how insignificant the FL feels—even though the entire story is supposedly centered on her.

Final Verdict

The Witch: Part 2 – The Other One is a classic case of:

Big names, wasted talent

Weak writing

Forced characters

No emotional or narrative payoff

Instead of expanding the universe meaningfully, the film dilutes everything that made Part 1 special.
4.5/10

More confusing than scary

Honestly that movie was just a big confusing mess with a couple dead bodies in between but the story was still pretty good actually. The most disturbing part for me was honestly the dead dog and them shooting pigeons for fun ^-^''

I guess I have more empathy for animals than for people. Either way I'm still really confused about everything. My theory was that the main character was the killer, since all the victims were his family, but didn't remember it like maybe he was possessed or something but that feels like something they would reveal and not leave open like this. Or maybe I just missed something

Sadness, doom and gloom

I didn't not expect a sad ending AT ALL. "Won't it gets better when we are adults?" As a queer person i ask myself that every day.the movie got a bit too real ,i really wanted to cry. The drawing at the end was simple but it said a lot,shi really hits home.

Would i recommend? Yes if you are really looking for a sad queer story with realistic vibes.

Would i rewatch? Maybe when I feel like being sad but most likely no just because it's too real and sad.

The Ugly Truth of Worshiping "Image" in the Eyes of Others

The story follows a man in his forties who lives with his blind father—a legendary craftsman of Korea’s finest traditional seals. He receives a call informing him that the body of his mother, who disappeared 40 years ago, has been found. Alongside a pragmatic, scoop-hungry documentary producer, the "ugly" truth about the mother’s death and her past begins to unfold.

This is a movie about ugliness—not just the physical kind the mother was shamed for, but the ugliness of the soul. In the very first scene, the blind father gives a long speech about how people wrongly assume the blind don't appreciate beauty. Hold on to this sentence, because it defines the entire film and its shocking twist.

The movie is built on the idea of "stigma." The mother, whose face remains hidden for most of the film, is branded as "ugly." When she married, people mocked her, thinking that just because someone "noticed" her, she suddenly thought she had a voice and rights. There is also the stigma of bullying, the victim-blaming faced by her coworker, and the blind husband's own feeling of being "cheated" or fooled.

The most "ugly" things in the film are the "walls of trophies." Whether it’s the father’s awards for his beautiful craftsmanship or the old factory owner’s disgusting photos of his "prey" displayed like achievements, both built their glory on spiritual rot. In the end, the only one labeled "ugly" was the only one with a beautiful soul.

Everyone else is ugly in their own way. The producer is a hypocrite seeking only success. As for the son, he deserves an entire series of articles to describe his character. The ending is striking; when we finally see the mother’s face in a photo, she is a carbon copy of her son. If the son were a girl, he would be the "ugly" one.

He inherited his mother’s face (which looks average for a man) but inherited the rotten soul of his father—the man who killed his mother simply because of her looks. The father interpreted every laugh around him as mockery of his wife’s ugliness in a society that worships "image." A society that literally idols how it looks in the eyes of others. The son chose to keep that "idol" standing by burying the truth.

In the final scene, the son breaks down in hysterical tears, signaling his defeat. He surrenders to the social "idol" despite knowing it’s a lie. He chose to protect his father’s reputation as a "beautiful Korean legend." Shattering that image would be a massive slap to the face of society, and his choice was driven by pure selfishness and fear of losing his own status.

The movie is good, but the "reveal" felt a bit weak. Given the build-up and the documentary-style interviews, I expected a much bigger shock.

The first real shock is the mother’s past with her brothers, who only showed up for the inheritance. They described their childhood as a "happy family" right before the truth revealed she was actually a survivor of a very toxic family. She was honest and brave—the exact opposite of everyone else—yet she was betrayed by the person closest to her, all because of her face.

Red Herring: The Movie. This is pretty much dog's crap

A scummy dude gets killed; his equally scummy brother - but with pathological violence issues, instead of being a crack-head wife-beater - sets out to find the killer and hand out a miscarriage of justice.

I'm all for revenge flicks, vigilante flicks, thrillers... I don't like violence, but it can fun when it's unrealistic, and conveys the sense of urgency when it's done right. Here, the violence is because all the main characters are scum of the Earth and don't know how to do - and probably aren't even much good at - anything else.
Obviously then, we don't have a good motive to cheer for the lead in his quest, nor can we support him, since he's an epic arse-hole.

The plot is an absolute mess too!
The first 6 minutes were mindless flashes and people not even introduced properly, in a student-like montage. It was a very bad sign and, unfortunately, the rest of the story barely progressed.
We had a writer character in the film just to prove am insipid, stupid distraction, a missing woman we never got to know or really care about, some fight scenes which were not fun, but, where not overly brutal (thankfully), did a good job in turning me off of the main character, and dull dialogues, as everyone walked around not much giving a toss, and being too secretive or thinking they're too cool to have any real conversations.

Honestly: there's nothing to recommend and I'm gutted that I wasted an hour and 40 minutes watching this, instead of something else.

Don't make the same mistake.

Short, sweet, and universal.

Touching and ending in sweetness (and realistic kisses). The synopsis on MDL is misleading. I'd say it's: Three pairs of best friends. One friend decides to run away from something, the other friend wants them to stay. What is revealed from both sides changes their dynamic.

All three couples acted well and had slightly different takes on the dialogue so it didn't feel too repetative. With the three couples experiencing the same scenario, it really emphasized that love is love, no matter the genders.

The music was perfect for it too.

movie potrays a simple yet deeper message

This movie clearly portrayed how society's standard of the word 'ugly' affects the life of a person. Just how simply Jung hee was killed just because she was not pretty enough. As we already know how Korea is with beauty standards, and this movie shows us the dark side. Jung hee had a bad past, yet she was a kindhearted soul, yet she was killed brutally. It's sad to think of how she had an unfair life. But in the end when we finally see her, we understand she was never ugly, just the society said her that she was, and she just believed and most importantly, she helped her colleague yet was blamed for it.
