Play Something Else

I kept thinking if this had better actors would it have been enjoyable—maybe. Then I looked at what I really didn't like: Dead plot, no real angst, no atmosphere, no urgency, time period of the story When I say time period, I mean this might be more appropriate for teen age setting than adults.

The acting though was the real drawback. It was matter of fact. The only two showing any real talent were Yang and Shin. They seemed more relaxed and projected well enough. Most were stilted, expressionless and flat.

The usual shenanigans in the plot occurred with no urgency whatsoever. I will ignore the need for the last bonding session in the wilderness. Unnecessary and served no real purpose.

If this is missed, nothing will be missed.

Hell No, This Drama Came Out of Nowhere ?

I went into Our Sticky Love thinking, “Okay, I’ll just watch the first 2 episodes and see how it goes.” But then I found out that all the episodes had already aired, and honestly, I'm so glad they did because I ended up finishing the whole thing in ONE DAY. 😭

I really liked the whole fake boyfriend + amnesia/memory-lost girlfriend setup. It was exactly the kind of ridiculous-but-fun plot that somehow makes you want to keep watching.

We have Jung Hae-in playing a former gangster, and I LOVED him in this role. He pulled off both sides of the character so well — the soft, sweet side and the tougher gangster side. But honestly, I was way more invested in his gangster era. They should have given us WAY more scenes from that period because I needed to see more of it! 😭

And Ha Young did such a great job too. I really liked her character, and she brought so much charm and drama to the drama.

Even the side characters — who could be a little annoying sometimes — somehow made the drama more entertaining. 😂 Honestly, their chaos is part of what makes this drama fun.

And I genuinely don't understand why this drama has such a low rating. Is it the most groundbreaking drama ever? No. But is it a fun, easy, one-time watch that can get you hooked? Absolutely.

Also… THE CAMEOS. 👀

I'm not going to tell you who they are because I don't want to spoil the surprise, but there is more than one cameo, and some of you might have already seen them in edits. Still, seeing them actually show up in the drama hits differently. 😭

So if you're looking for something fun to watch this August, just give Our Sticky Love a try. You can easily finish it in 2–3 days, and apparently, if you're me, you can finish it in one day. 😂

Don't go into it expecting a masterpiece. Just enjoy the chaos, the chemistry, Jung Hae-in's gangster era, and the ridiculous storyline.

Sometimes you don't need a perfect drama. You just need a drama that makes you want to keep watching. And this one did exactly that for me.

A Winter Sun that woke the Wind in Spring

This series had nearly everything you could possibly want in it. Power struggles, scandals, bts in the entertainment industry, a touch of political influence, ex-lovers, rivals, new lovers, death, but to me, this was a true love story. An unbreakable love that, when tested, will always survive.

All of those chess pieces were trying to take down Changyang and Qinglang's love and everytime, they failed.

It starts off hopeful and dives straight into falling in love, in spring, in the mountains.

Then life crashes in and keeps crushing the main characters down, trying to force them apart. Even though force breaks their hands from each other, they still come back and hold each other's hands once more.

They both supported each other's dreams, knowing when they were ready, they would come back to each other. 5 years! It's sad that society made those choices more difficult for them, but their love was top priority for them. And I whole-heartily agree. To love and be loved is the greatest thing you will ever know.

Does it have a good ending? Yes
Is it happy? For the main characters, yes
Do people die? A lot

Thank you to everyone who made this drama. It's so special and will never be forgotten.

As the sun comes up and wakes the new day, I feel lighter and full having watched this seires.

La straordinaria alchimia tra gli attori protagonisti infonde vita a personaggi indimenticabili, regalando interpretazioni magistrali che brillano per autenticità, intensità e profondità psicologica in ogni singolo sguardo. Good Start, Failed to Keep Me Hooked

So, I recently finished Dream to You, mainly because it has none other than Hwang In-youp and Hye-ri, and honestly, I went into this drama with pretty high expectations.

The first 4 episodes were SO good. I genuinely thought, “Okay, they are really going somewhere with this!” It felt like the writers had pulled out every card they had just to hook us in. But then we reached episode 5… and somehow, the drama started going downhill.

After episode 6, I kept waiting for the story to finally give us the thing it had been building toward. I thought there would be some exciting reveal or a plot twist that would actually surprise me. But nope. We basically got a typical villain backstory, predictable twists, and a storyline that didn't feel as fresh as I initially expected.

The concept itself had potential. I really thought it was going to be something different, but unfortunately, it didn't give me enough reason to stay completely invested.

And yet… I still finished it. 😂

Not going to lie, I watched a lot of the later episodes in 2x speed, especially the last few. I was basically skipping everything except the main points just to see how it would end.

One thing I did enjoy, though, was the two other couples. I liked the chemistry between both of them, but if I'm being completely honest, I was MUCH more interested in the CEO × writer. Their chemistry was SO good, and I genuinely wanted to see more of them.

But then the director/writers decided to do… whatever they did with them. 😭

Because by the end, I was sitting there thinking, “Wait… what happened to them?” Their storyline just didn't give me the payoff I was expecting, and I honestly didn't understand what they were trying to do with that relationship.

I do think everyone got their happy ending, but that last episode had me questioning everything. Like… THIS is how we're ending it? This was definitely not what I signed up for.

My honest advice?

If you want to watch this drama, watch the first 6 episodes. After that, you can either drop it and tell yourself, “I just couldn't continue because of some silly reason.” 😂 Honestly, you'll probably remember the drama more fondly that way.

But if you're the type who needs to finish whatever you start, then go ahead and complete it. Just don't expect the drama to maintain the same quality or excitement it had in those first few episodes.

Good beginning, interesting concept, great chemistry… but unfortunately, the story couldn't keep up with its own start.

Una zuppa è una ZUPPA!

Mi sono chiesta parecchie volte quale sia il misterioso motivo per cui Dating in the Kitchen abbia suscitato tanto entusiasmo, anche da parte di una cara amica che stimo e che considero, peraltro, la madrina delle mie scarne competenze tecniche, essendo un'art director di livello importante. La domanda mi è tornata in mente leggendo alcune recensioni talmente entusiaste da attribuire al drama significati che, francamente, sullo schermo ho faticato parecchio a trovare.
Una, in particolare, arriva a utilizzare termini di tale lirismo da vedere nella giovane Zhao Lusi che cucina per un CEO maturo addirittura la rinascita della carne, della biologia, del corpo e, presumibilmente, dell'ossitocina, trasformando una commedia romantica costruita su gag e malintesi in una «straordinaria parabola» biologico-sensoriale con diramazioni filosofiche ed esistenziali da pantagruelico endocrinologo innamorato.

E qui, francamente, viene da chiedersi se abbiamo visto lo stesso drama. o_O
Perché Dating in the Kitchen (DiTK)non è un'opera che abbia bisogno di essere trasformata in un trattato sulla sensualità per risultare piacevole. Il problema è che, tolta la confezione zuccherosa, la cucina e la presenza di due interpreti molto più capaci di quanto il materiale richieda, rimane un lavoretto pseudo-romantico dalla scrittura piuttosto elementare, costruito su equivoci, caricature, gigionerie e una quantità di gag che finisce per diventare la vera identità del prodotto. È un drama che può anche intrattenere, a patto di non chiedergli più di quello che ha da offrire. E soprattutto a patto di non trasformare ogni volta che Lu Jin assaggia qualcosa in una prova dell'avvenuta rinascita della carne.

Partiamo dunque dalla famigerata «biologia», parola piuttosto impegnativa per descrivere un uomo che scopre che il cibo può essere buono.
Lu Jin è rigidamente controllato, ossessionato dal lavoro, dalla precisione, dalla qualità e dal proprio sistema di regole; Gu Shengnan cucina bene, lui mangia, scopre che gli piace, torna a mangiare e progressivamente sviluppa un rapporto affettivo con quel cibo e con la persona che lo prepara. È una dinamica semplice, comprensibile e perfettamente coerente con il concept del drama. Il cibo diventa il mezzo attraverso cui una persona abituata al controllo riscopre il piacere e si apre progressivamente a qualcosa che non può essere regolato da una compravendita a ribasso. Ok, mi sta bene.
Ma trasformare questo meccanismo nella «riscoperta del corpo» è un salto interpretativo talmente enfatico che viene quasi da chiedersi se, alla prossima fetta di torta con la tartaruga sopra, Lu Jin non debba improvvisamente prendere coscienza della propria mortalità, elaborare il trauma edipico e riconciliarsi con il concetto junghiano di ombra.
Il cibo è certamente un linguaggio affettivo ed è uno degli elementi più originali del drama, almeno per il modo in cui viene utilizzato nella prima parte. Ma il fatto che un personaggio provi piacere mangiando non significa automaticamente che la regia abbia messo in scena una liturgia della carne. A volte un uomo ha semplicemente fame. E a volte una zuppa è semplicemente una zuppa, anche quando viene chiamata «delle streghe» per conferirle quell'indispensabile aura da pozione ancestrale che evidentemente mancava al brodo.
Il problema di alcune recensioni entusiaste è proprio questo: prendono ogni elemento funzionale della rom-com e lo elevano a simbolo universale. Il cucinare diventa «linguaggio della complicità», l'imboccarsi diventa «preludio d'amore raffinato ma travolgente», gli sguardi diventano «verità dei corpi», il cibo diventa un «defibrillatore» per una mente anestetizzata e, a questo punto, manca soltanto un cardiologo che certifichi l'avvenuta guarigione del CEO mediante riso fritto ai 9 sapori (mi pare si chiamasse così).
La cosa più curiosa, però, è la contraddizione interna a questo tipo di lettura. Si riconosce che la sceneggiatura è sbilanciata, forzata ed eccessivamente «gigiona», salvo poi attribuire alla stessa sceneggiatura una profondità simbolica quasi mistica quando serve a dimostrare la passione della coppia. Ma se la scrittura è davvero così grossolana da trasformare Gu Shengnan in una macchietta e da ricorrere continuamente alla farsa, bisogna avere il coraggio di dirlo fino in fondo.

Zhao Lusi e Lin Yushen, funzionano, hanno una buona intesa e riescono a rendere credibile una relazione che sulla carta presenta parecchie difficoltà. Soprattutto Lin Yushen possiede una presenza scenica sufficiente a impedire che Lu Jin precipiti definitivamente nella caricatura del CEO algido, ricco, elegante e insopportabile che, come da contratto del genere, deve essere redento dalla donna solare entrata caoticamente nel suo universo.
Eviterei però il culto della «chimica», perché la chimica non è una sostanza misteriosa che fuoriesce dagli attori quando la telecamera stringe sull'inquadratura. È il risultato di recitazione, regia, montaggio, scrittura, ritmo, costruzione della scena e capacità di rendere leggibile un rapporto. Zhao Lusi e Lin Yushen riescono a portare a casa quello che viene loro affidato, e qualche volta lo fanno anche molto bene; ma non ogni loro sguardo costituisce una dimostrazione sperimentale della forza di attrazione terrestre.
Anzi, in alcuni momenti i due sembrano divertirsi loro stessi dell'assurdità delle situazioni in cui sono stati infilati, lui spesso trattiene una risata e non mi stupisce affatto. Ci sono scene talmente artificiose che la risata degli interpreti sembra quasi quella di due persone che, per un istante, si chiedono come sia stato possibile arrivare a quel punto della sceneggiatura.
È quasi uno dei pochi elementi sinceri del drama.
Il vero limite non è che manchi completamente una componente romantica o fisica: è che la scrittura è troppo sbilanciata e il tono troppo farsesco per riuscire a sostenere adeguatamente il passaggio dalla commedia alla dimensione sentimentale. Gu Shengnan è simpatica, energica e talentuosa, ma viene continuamente sottoposta a un trattamento da cartone animato. La recitazione è spesso sopra le righe, caricaturale, volutamente esasperata; non sorprende quindi che qualcuno, parlando tecnicamente, l'abbia definita «gigiona». Gli equivoci vengono accumulati con una generosità che sfiora l'accanimento e l'immagine della professionista competente convive continuamente con una dose di ingenuità e di comportamento infantile funzionale alla gag successiva.
Se una protagonista viene presentata come una cuoca talentuosa, creativa e appassionata, ci si aspetterebbe che la sua crescita professionale costituisca almeno una delle colonne portanti della storia. Invece la cucina, dopo essere stata il motore più originale della prima parte, viene progressivamente utilizzata soprattutto come strumento romantico, mentre la trama si sposta verso incomprensioni sentimentali, dinamiche familiari, rivalità e conflitti aziendali.

Wow, che novità!!!!!!!

Una donna giovane e talentuosa, un uomo ricco e potente, una famiglia che non approva, una rivale che vuole riprendersi il proprio uomo, un'altra figura maschile pronta a diventare alternativa romantica e una guerra sentimentale che si sovrappone a quella aziendale: davvero una roba mai vista.
E naturalmente, siccome evidentemente un drama non può sopravvivere soltanto di siparietti, a un certo punto arrivano anche le sottotrame che dovrebbero dare spessore alla storia. Abbiamo la classica donna frustrata che tenta di riprendersi l'uomo che ama e usa il proprio potere per interferire nella relazione; abbiamo l'amica che si mette con il subordinato del protagonista maschile, perché evidentemente anche questa casella doveva essere spuntata e serve narrativamente ad acquisire informazioni da una o dall'altra parte perchè la comunicazione onesta tra i due langue, anche questo mai visto, eh; abbiamo poi il personaggio che inizialmente sembra il bravo ragazzo, l'amico di sempre della protagonista, che si rivela avere legami familiari con Lu Jin e finisce per assumere la funzione del villain con tanto di vendetta personale.

Il tutto senza gradualità mentre siamo ancora nella landa delle gag, qualcuno apre la porta e annuncia: attenzione, adesso abbiamo anche il trauma, il complotto, la vendetta e il triangolo.

Il risultato è un tono narrativo schizocronico, perché il drama sembra non sapere mai fino in fondo che cosa vuole essere. Un minuto prima siamo in una commedia di equivoci quasi da vaudeville; qualche episodio dopo i protagonisti litigano perché non sanno parlarsi, il mondo di lui dichiara guerra a lei perché troppo giovane, povera e non all'altezza, mentre il villain si propone come l'altro salvatore dalla sua parte, con il piccolo dettaglio di voler utilizzare la vendetta contro l'altra famiglia.
Una meravigliosa torre di Hanoi narrativa.
Prima di quel momento abbiamo avuto una quantità industriale di gag, equivoci, cadute, espressioni esasperate, situazioni improbabili e interazioni che appartengono molto più alla commedia slapstick che alla tensione romantica. I protagonisti vengono trascinati continuamente da una situazione farsesca alla successiva e la relazione cresce dentro una sceneggiatura che sembra avere una paura quasi patologica del silenzio, della sottrazione e persino della possibilità che due persone possano stare semplicemente nella stessa stanza senza che qualcuno inciampi, urli, fraintenda qualcosa o faccia una faccia da cartone animato.

Poi, improvvisamente, la macchina da presa decide che è arrivato il momento della passione.La sceneggiatura non può passare venti episodi a trattare la coppia come una sit-com e poi pretendere che lo spettatore reagisca a un cambio di marcia improvviso come se avesse assistito a una combustione spontanea. La tensione erotica ha bisogno di anticipazione, desiderio trattenuto, esitazioni, prossimità, sguardi che cambiano progressivamente significato, gesti che diventano più intimi. Deve esistere la sensazione che qualcosa stia per accadere prima che accada.

Qui, invece, spesso sembra che qualcuno abbia semplicemente premuto il pulsante «fanservice». Ed è qui che cade l'asino. Perché un conto è vedere un uomo che finalmente bacia una donna dopo aver costruito per episodi il desiderio di farlo; un altro è vedere un personaggio maschile che, quasi dal nulla, la afferra per il collo e la bacia mentre lei resta rigida, con la bocca serrata, prima di respingerlo dopo pochi secondi.
E lo stesso vale per il famoso gesto del letto. Lui la solleva, la porta via e la getta sul materasso. Fisicamente è successo qualcosa, certo. Cinematograficamente, però, non necessariamente. Il corpo è stato spostato da A a B. Questo non significa che sia stato creato erotismo. Una scena erotica non è un trasporto merci.

Se prendi una persona e la metti su un letto, hai messo una persona su un letto. Perché io creda a quel gesto devo credere prima al desiderio che lo produce. Devo percepire che quel corpo è diventato importante per l'altro, devo sentire l'attesa, l'imbarazzo, la curiosità, l'attrazione, magari persino la paura di oltrepassare un limite. Altrimenti la fisicità diventa soltanto coreografia.
E infatti è esattamente ciò che accade: la componente fisica arriva come una sorta di premio di produzione per lo spettatore che ha resistito alle gag, quasi che dopo una certa quantità di episodi fosse necessario consegnargli qualche bacio e qualche centimetro di pelle per evitare che abbandonasse la visione.
Ed è qui che bisogna essere onesti sul pubblico di destinazione. Il fanservice fisico è evidente e non c'è assolutamente nulla di scandaloso. È una scelta commerciale, e il drama sa benissimo che il suo pubblico apprezzerà il protagonista maschile attraente, la differenza d'età, il corpo valorizzato dalla fotografia, i baci e una maggiore prossimità fisica. Non è alta filosofia dell'eros: è intrattenimento confezionato per un pubblico che, comprensibilmente, può essere disposto a perdonare parecchie sciocchezze se sullo schermo compaiono un bell'uomo, qualche muscolo e una coppia che finalmente si bacia.

Ma il fanservice non è scrittura e il muscolo non è la trama!!!
Ed è questa la cosa più irritante delle recensioni che vogliono assolutamente trovare profondità dove non ce n'è abbastanza. Non si limitano a dire «mi sono piaciuti». No: devono trasformare una rom-com convenzionale in una parabola biologica, sensoriale, esistenziale, erotica e quasi filosofica. Il problema è che, così facendo, non stanno più descrivendo il drama. Stanno scrivendo un altro drama sopra quello che hanno visto.
La loro interpretazione può essere legittima, naturalmente.

E qui arriviamo alla regia, che purtroppo non dimostra una particolare inventiva visiva: è una regia funzionale, ordinata, televisiva, che accompagna e illustra senza trasformare davvero le immagini in un secondo livello narrativo. La macchina da presa registra quello che succede e lo consegna allo spettatore ma raramente costruisce attraverso l'inquadratura ciò che la sceneggiatura non riesce a costruire attraverso la relazione.
Non c'è una particolare ricerca visiva capace di rendere memorabile un gesto banale, né una regia che sappia trasformare il silenzio, la distanza o la prossimità in tensione. E se la sceneggiatura non costruisce il desiderio e la regia non lo amplifica, rimane soltanto l'attore che fa quello che gli è stato chiesto.

Quanto alla colonna sonora, le musichette sono gradevoli, facilmente ascoltabili e coerenti con il tono del prodotto. Alcune sono anche carine e pertinenti al tema. Ma non sono memorabili e soprattutto non riescono a fare miracoli dove il materiale visivo e narrativo non li consente. Servono a sottolineare il momento, non a crearlo.
Per i primi 4 episodi ho avuto una fortissima tentazione di dropparlo. Poi, anche considerando che il drama è relativamente breve, ho deciso di andare avanti per vedere se riuscisse almeno a riprendersi un po'. In effetti, superata la fase iniziale più esasperatamente farsesca, diventa guardabile e arriva quasi alla sufficienza. Ma il problema è che non cambia davvero la propria identità: rimane una storia costruita su toni farseschi pervasivi, zucchero, cibo, slapstick e romanticismo, con una componente fisica inserita a posteriori che non basta a trasformare la relazione in qualcosa di realmente passionale.

E allora diciamolo chiaramente: è un drama mediocre.
Non mediocre nel senso indulgente con cui si definisce qualcosa «carino, leggero e senza pretese». Mediocre proprio nella costruzione: la scrittura è poco originale, la caratterizzazione è subordinata alla gag, gli equivoci vengono sfruttati fino allo sfinimento, le sottotrame sembrano assemblate seguendo un manuale di conflitti romantici già ampiamente usato e la regia raramente trova un linguaggio visivo capace di sostenere quello che la storia vorrebbe farci sentire.

È un prodotto semplice nella scrittura e nella resa, per carità, non tutti i drama devono cambiare la vita dello spettatore; non tutti devono avere una sceneggiatura raffinata, una regia autoriale o una sensualità sofisticata. Il problema nasce quando una produzione di questo livello viene caricata di significati che non riesce minimamente a sostenere.
E siccome il drama stesso non sembra avere alcuna intenzione di complicarsi la vita, facciamo altrettanto noi spettatori: non occorre cercare una filosofia dell'esistenza dentro una ciotola di zuppa.
È un drama in cui un CEO fissato con il cibo si innamora della cuoca che gli fa perdere la pazienza.
Fine.
Chiamare tutto questo una travolgente parabola biologico-sensoriale sulla rinascita del corpo?
No!
Quella, più che una recensione di questo, sembra la recensione di un altro drama.
Uno che, evidentemente, io non ho visto!

Une ambiance 70's incroyable... Mais 6 épisodes qui m'ont paru interminables...

Alors, je ne vais pas mentir, si j'ai lancé "Made in Korea", c'était en partie pour Woo Do-hwan 🤭. Mais avec six épisodes, c'était aussi l'occasion parfaite de faire un peu de ménage dans ma watchlist qui se remplit beaucoup plus vite qu'elle ne se vide... 😅

Bref, direction la Corée des années 70, avec jeu de pouvoir, argent, corruption et trafic de drogue. Avec d'un côté, un homme prêt à tout pour gravir les échelons, et de l'autre, un procureur bien décidé à lui mettre des bâtons dans les roues...

Clairement, l'ambiance est probablement ce que j'ai préféré ici. Les costumes, les décors, la photographie, la fumée de cigarette... tout est fait pour nous plonger dans cette époque. Visuellement, c'est vraiment canon 👌🏻, et Hyun Bin dans ses costumes... bon, voilà, je pense qu'on se comprend 🤭

Par contre... c'est dans la narration que j'ai commencé à décrocher... 😬 Il y a énormément de dialogues, de discussions politiques, de magouilles, de personnages qui tirent les ficelles dans tous les sens. Généralement, j'aime bien les intrigues complexes, mais pour le coup, j'ai parfois eu du mal à suivre qui voulait quoi... 🤷🏼‍♀️

Mais le plus gros problème pour moi, ça reste clairement le rythme. J'ai trouvé le drama tellement lent que ses six épisodes m'ont paru durer une éternité 😂 J'attendais constamment que l'histoire accélère... mais j'ai souvent eu cette impression de tourner autour des mêmes enjeux.

Du coup, plus j'avançais, plus je me disais que cette histoire aurait peut-être mieux fonctionné en version film, avec un format plus resserré, moins de détours et plus de rythme auraient selon moi, donné beaucoup plus d'impact à cette histoire de pouvoir et de corruption... 🤷🏼‍♀️

Sinon, le casting vient relever le niveau. Hyun Bin porte très bien son personnage et Jung Woo-sung lui offre un véritable répondant. J'ai trouvé que leur opposition fonctionnait plutôt bien, même si j'aurais aimé ressentir beaucoup plus de tension.

Et puis il y a Woo Do-hwan... 😍 J'aurais évidemment aimé le voir davantage, mais ça, je pense que vous vous en doutiez déjà 😅

J'ai également trouvé dommage que certains personnages secondaires "coucou Ikeda Yu Jin", restent assez peu développés. Il y avait clairement matière à leur donner davantage de poids dans l'histoire et peut-être même à apporter un peu plus de dynamisme à l'ensemble.... C'est un petit regret perso 😉

Au final, je retiens surtout un drama très réussi visuellement. Il a une vraie identité avec cette ambiance 70's particulièrement travaillée et son casting solide. Mais derrière cette belle façade, la narration et le rythme m'ont beaucoup moins convaincue...

Bref, j'ai regardé cette première saison parce que la deuxième arrive bientôt... mais pour etre 100% honnêtes, "Made in Korea" ne m'a pas laissé avec cette envie impatiente d'enchaîner directement la suite. Je regarderai la saison 2, mais pas forcément au moment de sa sortie ✌🏻

Watch for a light-hearted youth drama, not for the main couple.

This is a great light hearted drama to watch for themes of youth, coming of age, friendship group, friends to lovers, high school and academia, strong family bonds.

Initially I was thinking of dropping this because the first few episodes didn't feel all that interesting to me. But I held on and it does get better from Ep 5.

Being introduced to Tian Xi Wei as Lin Zixia felt great - she is a great actress and she did so good here. Her character here was quite interesting because she is supposedly this highly unusual, awkward character who is unable to socially interact or atleast misses social cues. This aspect of her character was hugely played up in the first few episodes, it sort of gives you this impression she would be this Young Sheldon type of character all the way through. What's more surprising is that it doesn't play out like this. Lin Zixia is NOT actually as socially incompetent and awkward as emphasised. She's just been unpopular during her childhood until she finds friends other than just Jiang Yu Bai starting from Ep 5. We get to see a lot of times that she is fully capable of making friends when other people aren't rude to her, and she is emotionally able to recognise and form bonds. We go from "this FL is so unusual from others" straight to "now she just feels like a regular character." Almost as if it gives you whiplash. Apart from her having this immensely high intelligence, she doesn't stick out from the other characters or compared to FL's in other dramas at all.

Jiang Yubai also starts off quite awkwardly but not because of his character - I felt Hu Yi Tian took a little getting used to because he came across as quite stiff and awkward in his acting. In comparison I thought the character of Shen Fu Xuan stood out much more compared to our ML in those early episodes. But Hu Yi Tian improves, after the first few episodes he is okay and does as well as the others. In terms of his character it's interesting because in the beginning you see he is not down hard for the FL. He has personality and desperately wants to be an individual seperated from Lin Zixia, who would mainly be the prioritised student in their pairing. But he strictly remains friends with her as opposed to a rival.

We do end up seeing Jiang Yubai fall for her very quickly, but when he does it is very sweet and cute. For example when he stays on a sleep call with her when she's at a hotel, and turns up to see her in the morning was very wholesome and fits in with being a cute romcom. Despite all this they still lacked chemistry till the very end. The drama is never able to meet this expectation throughout.

The other supporting cast, especially the friends all did amazing. Every character felt interesting and fit into the whole friendship group theme. My favourite was definitely Tang Ting Ting who came with a sense of relatability and humour more than any other character.

In terms of plot and pacing - Episodes 5-20 was by far the best section of this drama. The High School Arc until when the main leads reconcile in the present time at the end of Ep 20 is very well done.

The thing I liked most about the drama was that all the friends develop strong bonds, they were amongst the best relationships in the drama alongside the sibling relationship that Lin Zixia/Lin Zeqiu have with each other. Even Lin Zixia and Jiang Yu Bai's relationship feels better and much more warmer during this period of the drama.

However good it was at this point though, it still suffers from the common syndrome of becoming boring when the leads are together as adults (post Ep 20). They as a couple and also the plot itself become too bland, safe and predictable. Besides a few parts for Lin Zeqiu and Jin Baihui, I was ready for the drama to finish by Ep 25 or so tbh.

A deserved mention here for the side supporting couples - they all did very well and out of them I was the most invested in Lin Zeqiu and Jin Baihui's love story (even over the main leads). Apart from them the last 6-7 episodes were quite boring and I was fast forwarding all the business and work related parts which felt like too many.

Overall a cute, light hearted drama with flaws like blandness and no main lead chemistry. It's not even a bad drama, but neither is it so good that I would rewatch most of it and keep it in mind. I wouldn't recommend this drama if you specifically need a strong lead couple. It's a better drama when watching in terms of the youth, friendship, family, school genre.

+ a mention for a nice OST.

When idols don't act out their roles...

A typical idol BL where kissing is forbidden, because the actors can't commit to their roles. Again: If you do BLs do it the whole way and not half assed. The story is also quite mid, not bad, not good but the chemistry & acting was better than I expected,

There is not much else to say. It's an ok production, it did not have a lot of budget and it serves for the most part as boost for the idols, because BL is an easy way. But compared to real actors it's quite shocking that in 2026 they still zoom on the lips, but there is no kissing at all. I would have been more content with it, when they did not zoom on lips or hid it completely as other show already did. They did not even manage a peck on the lips. Very disappointing.

At least we don't have cringe comedy but the script was nothing to write home about. If you have time you may watch it, it's not the worst, but if your time is limited, you can skip it and not miss anything.

They Had a Story… Until They Forgot What It Was

I’m Still Trying to Figure Out What Happened

The beginning had me hooked. It felt like there was a real story behind it, a clear direction, interesting characters, and you could feel that the writers had a plan. I remember thinking, “Okay, this could be really good.”

And then… somewhere along the way, they lost it.

I honestly don't know when it happened, but it felt like the writers slowly forgot what story they were telling. Every few episodes there was another secret, another identity, another problem, another plot twist. And instead of making the original story stronger, everything just became more and more messy.

It felt like they started with a concept they were genuinely excited about and then got bored halfway through.

It's like I can hear the production team say:

"This was supposed to be the story."

"Yeah, well... let's add this."

"And this?"

"Sure."

"Does it make sense?"

"Who cares, we need to finish." 😂😂😂

And the romance really didn't help.

I'm sorry, but the female lead and male lead had almost zero chemistry for me. She was so cold and expressionless most of the time that I kept wondering whether she was actually in love with him or simply following instructions.

She gave me serious “Step 1: stand here. Step 2: say this line. Step 3: look at him for three seconds. Step 4: leave.” energy.

I kept waiting for some real emotional connection between them.

Nothing.

I wanted to believe in their relationship, but I just couldn't feel it.

And then we got to the final episode.

Those last 11 minutes...

I'm sorry, but WHAT WAS THAT?

They spent the whole drama building all these storylines and conflicts and then apparently remembered at the very last minute that they had to actually end the drama.

Eleven minutes.

They tried to resolve EVERYTHING in eleven minutes.

Everything suddenly happened so fast that I wasn't even emotionally involved anymore. I was just watching and thinking, “Are we seriously doing this?”

It was rushed, unbelievable and honestly a little insulting to the audience.

At that point I started wondering if the actors' managers and agencies actually read the whole script before agreeing to the drama.

Do they read the ending?

Do they know what happens?

Or do they just say, “The first few episodes look good, the cast is good, let's go!”?

Because I cannot imagine reading that final episode and thinking, “Yes, this is a satisfying conclusion.”

The sad thing is, I don't think this drama was hopeless.

That's what makes it frustrating.

There was something here.

The beginning proved it.

But somewhere along the way, it feels like they completely lost their original idea. They started with a concept, then wandered away from it, got lost somewhere in the middle, and eventually just wanted to get home.

By the end, I didn't even feel angry.

I was just disappointed.

That particular kind of disappointment where you sit through the final scene thinking:

“Oh… that’s it? Just two images of horseback riding in the desert and an open question from the ML: ‘Will you walk with me again?’ Seriously? That’s the ending???”

And then the credits roll and you're sitting there wondering why you invested all those hours.

I don't hate Royal Betrothal.

I just wish it had been the drama it seemed like it was going to be.

The beginning made me excited.
The middle made me confused.
The romance made me question my eyesight.
The last 11 minutes made me question reality.

I came for the story.

I stayed because I wanted to see how it would all come together.

Unfortunately, somewhere along the way, the story itself got lost.

So first of all, I’m a huge Yumi’s Cells fan. It’s a really great series with such an original concept, so I really wanted to watch the third season.
Unfortunately, the story was lacking in so many ways. It was short, with very little character development and almost no chemistry. I didn’t even understand how they fell in love or how they went from a hate-to-love relationship. It felt absurd. There was no build-up, no explanation, and everything felt so superficial.
That’s what disappointed me the most, because in the previous seasons, Yumi’s feelings and relationships felt so real and relatable, almost like real life rather than just a typical drama. That was what made the series exceptional in the first place. Even the ending felt rushed.
This season just felt like a casual, ordinary rom-com with nothing particularly special about it. Even the comedy was lacking, not just the romance.
As for the actors, Kim Go-eun was perfect as usual. The male lead was handsome, but I didn’t find him very convincing.
Overall, this was nothing like what I expected from the final season of Yumi’s Cells. However, if you’re looking for a fluffy, easy-to-watch rom-com that you won’t think about too much afterward, it’s not bad.

All Style, No Substance — Even HMH Couldn't Save It

I'm sorry to the fans of Key to the Phoenix Heart, but I had to drop it at episode 4. I'm honestly surprised to see nothing but 10/10 ratings.

The main cast is undeniably appealing, with HMH and Ai Mi, who, despite her young age, delivers a convincing performance. Personally, even though I was aware of the age gap of the two leads, it didn't bother me visually. I understand the controversy, but it seems to me that her age was taken into consideration by the production team, and there are no inappropriate scenes. From my perspective, that's what matters most.

- The visuals are clearly meant to look polished, but the pursuit of an overly perfect image comes at the expense of the cinematography.

- The biggest issue, though, is that the story fails to properly lay the groundwork needed to emotionally engage the viewer. The plot itself is simple, so the stakes are easy to understand, but there is absolutely no emotional depth, which makes those stakes feel superficial. Even when some scenes aim for a lighter tone, the result feels excessively theatrical, including during supposedly tense moments. Every problem is resolved far too quickly and easily, to the point where you start wondering why there was even a problem in the first place. There is a real issue with pacing and attention to detail. Even the sets feel like obvious studio sets, which only adds to the artificial, staged feeling.

- The lead actors undeniably have a strong screen presence, but the script is poor, and the performances of the other characters are extremely caricatured. I couldn't get into it despite my efforts.

I can understand that the story might simply be an excuse to watch HMH, but honestly, I don't buy any of it for a second.
