ABSOLUTE CINEMAAAAAAAAAAAAA

"Even if I die thousand times, I'll always find my way back to you." -Phob. I'M NOT OKAY TT

Okay, I have officially added another period BL to my list of absolute favorites. I have such a weakness for BLs set in the 1920s/30s (Century of Love, I Feel You Linger in the Air and Interminable), and The Edge of Horizon gave me EXACTLY the kind of atmosphere I love.

The story itself is definitely not perfect, though. I found the pacing pretty slow at times, and honestly, a lot of that frustration came from Tin because, BABE… THE WORLD IS LITERALLY FALLING APART AROUND YOU LUV... DO SOMENTHING!!!!!! There were so many moments where I desperately wanted him to have a little more sense of urgency because the situation was getting worse and worse, while he seemed to be waiting for the universe to solve everything for him. But I'll always defend my little prince anyway, he was under to much pressure TT

I also think the political side could have been handled in a much more interesting way. The series explained A LOT about the revolution, the political changes and the transition of government, specially how the monarchy and the people react to all of this, but sometimes it felt way too literal, almost like someone had opened a constitutional law textbook and decided to read it to me. And I KNOW it was important to understand what was happening, but some of those explanations really slowed the story down for me. Sometimes I, inevitably, ended up confused with this topic...

And I honestly think watching it while it was airing made a huge difference for me. Waiting an entire week for every episode, wondering what was going to happen to them, watching everything slowly unfold… that anticipation became part of the experience. If I had waited until it was completely finished and binge-watched it, I genuinely think I might have dropped it because of the pacing. But watching it week by week? I was INVESTED.

And after EVERYTHING Tin and Phob went through, seeing them finally get their happy ending almost broke me. I was genuinely expecting the worst until the very end because these two men simply could NOT have one peaceful day TT

(Gay communists really don't get a day off, huh)

Now about Princess Siri and Janthorn... I really wish they had been better developed!!! It’s a very promising couple—there’s chemistry and a solid storyline—but the execution left a lot to be desired. In the end, it wasn't clear (to me) whether they actually ended up together, and I think that counts as a flaw in the writing.

There are many questions that weren't answered well, or weren't answered at all. Some characters started out very prominent but suddenly vanished—like Siri’s father; the man seemed important to the political arc, yet suddenly, nothing more was heard about him. But the script isn't bad; it just focused more on the main arc—Tin and Phob and the "fall of the monarchy"—and overlooked or didn't give as much importance to the smaller arcs.

BUT despite this… I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS SERIES SO MUCH!!!!! They suffered, they fought, they lost time, they lost each other, they almost lost everything AGAIN… and somehow we actually got the happy ending they deserved.

So overall, to me: the plot could have been tighter, the pacing could have been better, and the political exposition desperately needed a little more creativity… But anyways, I loved the atmosphere, I loved the period setting, I loved Tin and Phob, love the photography, and I was completely emotionally invested in their story.

an office romance anyone can enjoy

I have watched 100+ BL, and I always go back to Old Fashioned Cupcake. key tags: office romance, 30+, younger seme older uke, age gap

Spice Meter 4/10: There's not anything in here that I would classify as NSFW, there's really only kissing, so if you're looking for a show that has a lot of NC scenes, this isn't it. However, what they do include has a lot of build-up and feels rather earth-shattering when it finally happens.

Story 10/10: I LOVE JBL'S AND THEIR STORY LINES. Old Fashioned Cupcake has SO many lines that have stuck with me to this day. For example, when Togawa says, "Did you know, the reason why a year feels so fast to adults is because every day is the same?" I think about that line all the time and say it to people constantly lol. This show taught me so much about adulthood, stagnation, and the importance of going outside of your comfort zone. Yes the sexy gay men falling in love is great too, but this show is more than that. It has something special that will stick with you after you're done watching it.

Acting/Cast/Chemistry 10/10: Love the actors, Togawa's actor has a really special boyish charm to him and Nozue's actor plays the mature uptight character very well. When Togawa messes with Nozue it makes your heart melt, Nozue gets so shy and it comes across as very cute! It feels as though the actors genuinely really like each other.

Music 10/10: Love the intro song . The music that SWELLS and then abruptly stops at the climax of the story has my heart racing. I love love love the way they used the background music in this show.

Rewatch Value 10/10: I have seen this show more times than I can count and recommend it to anyone wanting to watch a BL show for the first time.

Overall 10/10: OLD FASHIONED CUPCAKE YOU HAVE MY HEART. does this qualify as old-man yaoi?

A fun time

This was a fun show to watch. The drama, action, and the premise for this season of KR was very interesting to me. This is the first KR that I kept up to date with, and I enjoyed tuning in every Saturday/Sunday for a new episode. I think that around the halfway point things may have started to become a bit convoluted and the ending was a bit rushed but ultimately, this is a good show, despite how cheesy it can be and the CGI not being that good.

an extremely biased review (segasaki got me hooked guys)

I have re-watched this every year since it released. key tags: living together, uke indebted to seme

Spice Meter 6/10: Don't get your hopes up people this isn't on the same level as kinnporsche lol, BUT, for the scenes that are included, I think they do an incredible job. I don't know what it is but this drama has me burning up fanning my face and pausing to take a break more than any other show! For some reason, their scenes feel SO intimate and they're a lot more charged with a kind of dominance from Segasaki's side, and that really does it for me. Kind of like a tame version of power-play. If that's your cup of tea, you will like this show.

Story 10/10: Okay listen, the story isn't anything revolutionary, but I LOVE it to pieces. At the beginning, we get attached to Yoh, who is dealing with his own inferiority complex, his confusion about his relationship w/ Segasaki, his career growth, etc. and we learn to love him, his ditziness and all. As the story progresses, we start to learn more from Segasaki's perspective, and this is where it really becomes a LOVE story. Segasaki doesn't have much conflict/storyline other than his relationship with Yoh, and it's really wonderful to watch it unfold. Especially at the climax of the story, it's so impactful because FINALLY Segasaki is so raw and honest with his feelings even though from the beginning it felt like we barely knew him. ya'll I can gush about this fucking story for forever, please watch this drama.

Acting/Cast/Chemistry 10/10: i love love love these two characters. Segasaki and Yoh are the heart of the story, and they each really hold their own. Segasaki has this sort of sadistic mischievousness to him while Yoh is more gentle and heartwarming. Segasaki is also so hot yall i don't know what else you want me to say about that and Yoh is beautiful. they're definitely both quite skinny (as is common with BL actors), but if that doesn't bother you then enjoy.

Music 9/10: Sometimes JBL's can over-do it with the background music, but they didn't do that at all here. They also aren't afraid to have no music at all which THANK GOD, it really gives the climatic/serious scenes the tone that they need.

Rewatch Value 10/10: I have watched this BL probably eight times. It's just great. It's not too long, can binge it in a day, whenever I'm in a slump and kinda bored of the BL's that are out, I always go back to this.

Overall 10/10: In my top three BL of all time. Ticks every one of MY boxes, but I can see why it may not for other's. I really, really highly recommend this show,

Tudo termina onde deveria terminar.

i'm talking bout innit

Ollie has single-handedly given me a thing for men in fur coats. key tags: co-stars to lovers, explores dark themes

Spice Meter 9/10: In terms of the NC scenes here, they covered pretty much everything. Except I am SO PEEVED that we didn't really get to see them be intimate outside of when they're playing their characters on the show very much. However, I think this is first time I've seen a TOUNGE KISS in a CBL, I was gagged. Since Chinese BL's are voice over, I do think you miss out a bit on the real sounds, but overall, no complaints.

Story 9/10: I liked the story a lot. It kept me hooked and due to the pacing, I binged the fuck out of this show. There are times (as with most Chinese BL's) that the plot gets a bit confusing/convoluted and maybe things are drawn out a bit much, I also didn't particularly love the ending and the unnecessary conflict they have. I think the show really hit its peak at the midpoint. Overall, I think they balanced the "show" and real life pretty well, and I didn't find myself preferring one over the other as other reviewers have said.

Acting/Cast/Chemistry 10/10: Honestly, this is what really sells the show to me. Ollie does an incredible job and I can't take my eyes off him at all, and the chemistry he has with Shu Yuan is really special. I will say the actors are very skinny which can be a bit off putting at times, but I could literally watch a 20 minute clip of them eating dinner together I don't care. When they're on screen together it's mesmerizing. Supporting cast is also excellent.

Music 8/10: I can't say that I really found the music to be anything notable but it also wasn't distracting, which can be rare for a BL lol. They keep it relatively low-key to give the actual show room to breathe.

Rewatch Value 8/10: I have watched this once by myself and once with friends! And clips on Instagram. But I wouldn't say I would watch the whole thing in its entirety again.

Overall 9/10: Maybe I am overselling it, but I liked this show a lot! Especially in terms of Chinese BL's which I can sometimes find a bit hard to get through the whole thing, Deep In really kept my attention.

My thoughts so far! [SPOILERSSSS NOT JUST DOING IT FOR FUN]

I loveddd season 1 and I'm really enjoying season 2; the chemistry between the 4 main actors is incredible. The switch between the main story and their kids in the future is really interesting and new (in a good way)! I think 4mod going down the idol route and the show focusing on idol-fan culture is really in par with GELBOYS concept since a BIG part of season one was stan culture.

My current theory on who broke up is 4mod and Chian BUTTTTTTT it can always change. The reason why I think this is because 1 the actor in the beginning has brown eyes and is very asian looking, same as the actor on the facetime call with Baby (I'm guessing they're the two that broke up since the actor in the beginning nails said "miss u") so neither of them can be Bua. 2 Timethai one looks a bit like Baabin and two has Baabin's style since Baabin dresses more baggy? I guess you can say. Though they could've swapped couples like 4mod and Baabin start dating and Chian and Bua start dating vice versa, so we truly never know butttttt that's my theory.

I'm currently on episode 3 about to watch 4 but I'm scared cuz Baabin is a fan of 4mod now so I'm really scared that Baabin might fall for 4mod again and leave my baby Bua alone 😔😔😔

Anywaysss I am excited to see how this plays out since I'm LOVINGGGGG this season so far!!!!!!

EDIT: I started episode 4 and now I'm confused on my theory 😭. Like if it's meant to be Bua and Baabin that broke up its very bad casting in terms of Bua because Leon is very white looking and it's something they acknowledge in season one it wasn't like just never talked about it so they should've casted an actor that is white with blue eyes. Obviously again like I said before they could've switched couples but then why would either Chian or fou4mod keep memorabilia from when they were a couple if they're with someone else??? AHHHHHHHH WHY CAN'T THEY JUST TELL US WHO BROKE UPPPPPPP IM GOING CRAZYYY!!!

EDIT: BRUHHHHH I'm 1 more minute in and the freaking microphone is something he gave to all his fans so it could be any of them 😭😭😭😭 lemme just watch the damn show this is my last edit 😭😭😭

EDIT: OMG I WAS RIGHT IT IS FOU4MOD AND CHIAN THAT BROKE UPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP !!!!! okay forreal this is my last edit promise 🙏🙏

EDIT: im on episode 5 and these people piss me off atp im just going stop guessing 😭😭

Losing Control to Love

🍑🔥❄️"After that day, it feels he has put a spell on me. He unlocked the secret of my desire....And all those years he made me long for more... He drove me crazy in my mind...I spent 6 years in this shameful, hidden relationship."🍑🔥❄️

The drama begins with Shang Zhitao's point of view with the quote above, and then it flashes back to the beginning when she met Luan Nian. I have to admit, I am completely captivated by Luan Nian. He is everything. He is seductive...extremely seductive🔥 He is tough, but he is soft. I don't usually write reviews before I have watched the drama in its entirety, but I must put my thoughts into this partial review for now because under the influence of Luan Nian, I might forget some key points💓 You will know when you watch. This review is ongoing.

The title, THE EARLY SPRING, brings to mind thawing ice and tulips growing from bulbs that have been dormant during the cold winter months. Think of the male lead, Luan Nian, as the thawing ice and the female lead, Shang Zhitao, as a blooming tulip fresh out of college. Even her English name, Flora, correlates with the theme. It takes time and endurance for love and ambition to reach their full bloom. The early Spring is a time of new beginnings and growth. It is also a time of rebirth and relates to the second chance at love for the leads after a time of separation. Just like the tulips remain dormant only to bloom again in the early Spring, Luan Nian and Shang Zhitao will have their second chance.

Main Characters

🔥🧊🔥 Luan Nian is a highly successful and brilliant marketing director with confidence in his own ability to control and manage those around him, as well as his self-control. He thinks through problems logically and strategically. His character is complex. His actions show he has an emotional attachment to Tao, but he will not admit it to himself. He represents the illusion of emotional control. His logical mind didn't account for the missing key and the concept that love has no rules. But I love his character. He is my favorite in this drama. I don't see anything toxic about him. In fact, he shows his affection for Zhitao more easily than she does. He is tough on the outside, appearing detached and stoic, but at times, so tender and caring to Zhitao. The problem is that he wants to be in control. When he falls in love with Zhitao, he doesn't want to admit it because he doesn't know how to deal with the vulnerability that comes with emotional love.

NOTE: Even though his character is sophisticated and controlled, it is Luan Nian who makes me laugh out loud at his unexpected and spontaneous actions. His mouth is brutally blunt. He is shocking! He is bold! He is daring! He is petty 😂 And he is addictive!

🌷🍑🌷Shang Zhitao is the female lead who first appeared as a fresh graduate with average academic standards. Luan Nian rejects her as an employee, but due to circumstances, she is nevertheless hired by the company. On her first day at the prestigious firm, her boss, Luan Nian, bluntly tells her she is not suitable and will not survive in the field. Instead of backing down, she works hard with determination to achieve her goals. Shang Zhitao represents women striving for independence and career goals. She is cautious not to jeopardize her career for her relationship with Luan Nian. However, she does not share her problems with Luan Nian and tries to work things out herself. He helps her when he does find out, but it also bothers him that she doesn't call him for help. Zhitao is a character to be admired for her resilience and perseverance. She is brave. She pushes forward even though she feels vulnerable and inadequate. She becomes someone respected and admired in the workplace and even impresses Luan Nian.

🌷The Metaphor of the Antique Typewriter🌷

The minute I saw Luan Nian meticulously dusting off his antique typewriter. I knew it was special. Not just to him, but to the theme of this drama. My parents had one of these, and I know the keys of the manual or antique typewriters work differently than the keyboards we use today. The keys need to be pressed with some control. If you press too hard, they stick or will not bounce back smoothly. If you don't press enough, nothing will print. The typewriter represents Luan Nian and his control. He operates his business deals with the same mechanical precision, and he believes in managing with a system of rules. It also mirrors the way he approaches Zhi Tao. He knows not to pressure her too much, and he knows when to back off when she resists him.

In episode 1, Zhi Tao accidentally knocks the typewriter off the pedestal at the end of Luan Nian's desk, and it shatters on the ground. It was shocking! The pieces went everywhere. On the pedestal, it represented his controlled world, but shattered on the floor, it became a visual symbol that he does not have the control he thinks he has. He reassembles the typewriter, minus the broken L key, and puts it back on the edge of his desk, where it sits precariously, waiting to be knocked off again 😱 Zhi Tao notices the L key is missing and finds a replacement key for him. The key is not a perfect fit, and he types. "You don't have to be perfect to be worthy love." I think it's the fact that she helped him that made him accept the key as is. The question is, what does the L represent? It could be "love" as it is missing from their relationship, and it could also be for "Luan" once he accepts that love is a necessary part of a relationship.

In a nutshell, the antique typewriter represents Luan Nian's controlled, ordered life . He prides himself on his control. But his well-ordered life sits precariously on a pedestal just like his typewriter.

💗The Relationship 💗 "Can You Control Your Feelings of Love?"💗

The attraction is undeniable. Luan Nian wants a relationship with Zhi Tao, but he doesn't want the complications of emotional attachment. She wants to be with him. She doesn't want her career affected, as he is her boss. It is important to her to succeed without the stigma of taking shortcuts. But she is also unsure about being in a relationship with him. She resists. He pursues.

He challenges her with the question, "Can you control your feelings of Love?" At first, I thought there was an error and the meaning was lost in translation because why would a man who doesn't want emotional ties use the word love? The translation to the Mandarin word, xi huan, is like. Perhaps he really means "like" in the romantic sense, and maybe that is why it was translated as "love." He feels he has control over his emotions. But he knows she has feelings for him. She tells him she can control her feelings. The irony of it all is that Luan Nian already has feelings for Zhitao. It becomes obvious quite early in the drama even if he doesn't say it.

After that one-night "accident," as Tao calls it, she requests a transfer to distance herself from Luan Nian. He, in his own way, pursues her. She resists. But he convinces her to try a secret relationship that will not affect her job. He makes it clear he doesn't have time for romance, and if either wanted to be with someone else, they would end it. Tao agrees to a relationship of exclusivity. Can we say "friends with benefits?"

As of episode 10, it seems Luan Nian has already fallen. He doesn't realize it because he is still under the illusion of control. It is evident in his actions: the way he reaches for her hand as they walk, the way he looks for her, the way he moves anything that obstructs his view of her desk from his office, and the way he refuses to move into his new office with his promotion. After all, if he moved, how would he see Shang Zhi Tao from his office?

🌷Significant Quotes🌷

Tan Mian: You are a typical case of wanting something but being scared.
You didn't want her to cling to you,
yet you are afraid that she doesn't care about you.
Mr. Luan, you lost it.

Luan Nian: You don’t have to be perfect to be worthy of love.

Shang Zhitao: As much as I longed for love, I was still struggling with reality.

To be continued...

💗🌷💗The Early Spring is a powerful portrayal of love and relationships. It shows how two flawed people can hurt each other, evolve through years of separation, and finally stand as equals, proving that while we will never be perfect, we can always choose to be better.

We don't have to be perfect to be loved.

alls well that ends well (feat. yummy zen)

Not going to do a full-fledged review since this is just one episode, but I really appreciated this special episode. I hate when a BL ends and we don't actually get to SEE the couple be a couple. This episode did that perfectly. They fully let us fangirl and seethe in jealousy over the perfect adorable relationship these two have. They also included the NC scene(s) that I usually crave from a special episode! Zen also looks SO sexy in glasses and that brown hoodie hello. i completely get why he can act like an idiot now... if i were ryo i'd let him get away w/ it too

Classic and Mature Japanese BL (feat. HAH????)

Spice Meter 9/10: Wow, for a JBL this really took things to the next level. In general, Japanese BL's can be a bit shy with NC scenes but they did not shy away at all. Ep 3 had me gagged. And their KISSES are GREAT. However, I'm giving it an 9/10 because some of the scenes did kinda lack a sort of passion? And did sometimes come across as a bit awkward. But overall, really really happy with the intimate scenes in this show. What a treat.

Story 8.5/10: I read the manga and this live action was a surprisingly faithful adaptation. There aren't an overwhelming amount of cliché or cringe-y scenes, and I actually found myself laughing out loud a few times throughout. Some episodes are better than others, but overall, it grows really well and I found myself enjoying later episodes more than the first few, which can be hard for BL dramas to really hold your attention over a span of ten episodes. I enjoyed the length and pacing a lot.

Acting/Cast/CHEMISTRY 9.0/10: Okay, sometimes they over do the whole yankee type accent. Never in my life have I heard such an intense HAH???? as many times as in this show. But the acting was really quite good, they play the characters really realistically and don't over-do it very often. And Ryo and Zen have great chemistry, especially on Ryo's side I fully believed he was completely head over heels for Zen. Also, I LOVE the actor who played Young Ryo, he was perfect. Despite being introduced late, Futami did a great job as well! (Also, props to Zen's actor when he "passed out" for a second on the desk in episode 5, I genuinely gasped out loud I thought he really fell lol)

Music 6.5/10: Omg, this is my biggest gripe with the whole show. Some of the music was SUCH an odd choice and it was so distracting. For some scenes this loud clown-ass song would be playing over everything, or some dramatic ballad and it was like bro can we please just watch the damn show.

Rewatch Value 7/10: I could see myself rewatching this show at some point.

OVERALL 8.5/10: Would definitely recommend watching.

Watch this with an open mind and patience, and you will be blown away :)

This was fantastic. I think the way they brought everything together in the last 10 episodes was genius. The ending was so clever, and definitely left it open to a sequel so they should you know...get on that lol.

Special shout out to Joseph Zeng. The entire cast did great, had perfect arcs, amazing chemistry. The bromance was chef's kiss. Joseph Zeng's performance was incredibly special for me. The emotional range that he possessed in this drama was on a another level. If he wasn't making me laugh he was making me cry. They put him through it in this drama and met every challenge to perfection. He's such a great actor, and I really need to watch more of his stuff I was very impressed.

No negatives, not even a nitpick, my fave Cdrama of the year by far. Watch it, but watch it with an open mind, and patience is my advice.
