No charm, no acting skills

Things I liked

1 The premise. I thought it'd be interesting and a good way to spend some time with interesting colorful characters. I was wrong.

Things I disliked

1 The premise. It's done so many times and with much more heart that here it was a disaster. It's like they didn't even care to out some effort whether it was about the humor, the romance or the characters.

2 The ML. He tried some times bit he never delivered. Maybe he can thrive with a better script, I have no idea, but here he's bland as possible.

3 The FL. Nothing to signal. She didn't do a good job, and she came out an an amateur rather than a professional actress. Maybe this is her first role, I didn't check, but I hope she improves.

4 The village characters. As per usual a bunch full of clichés and most of the times I don't mind clichés, but here there was nothing to redeem them. I blame the director and of course the screenwriter. It's like they followed a list of rules of "How to write a small town script and fail." A total disappointment.

Choosing a Prince Is Harder Than Winning the Throne

Blossoms of Power surprised me. I went in expecting another pretty palace drama with endless plotting, dramatic staring contests, and people coughing blood every second episode. I got all of that... but somehow it still kept me hooked.

First things first. This drama is gorgeous. The cinematography deserves a standing ovation. Every frame looks like a painting, the palace sets are grand, and the costumes are absolutely stunning. Whoever was in charge of the wardrobe clearly woke up every morning and chose excellence. The colour palette, hairstyles, and accessories all screamed royal without looking like a fancy dress party.

The cast looked like they walked straight out of an ancient painting. Meng Ziyi carried herself with elegance and confidence, while He Yu made one of the most entertaining Crown Princes in recent memory. He could be clever, shameless, funny, romantic, and dangerous all within five minutes. Their chemistry wasn't fireworks every second, but it grew naturally through trust and partnership instead of instant love at first glance.

The acting was solid all around, especially from the supporting cast. In fact, some side characters quietly stole scenes whenever they appeared. Nobody felt like dead weight, and even the villains made you want to throw something at the screen, which means they did their job well.

The story starts strong and barely gives you time to breathe. Schemes, betrayals, revenge, politics, and power moves come one after another. You almost need a notebook to remember who is plotting against whom. The pacing is fast, sometimes too fast, but at least it never felt boring.

The romance was refreshingly mature. No endless misunderstandings that could have been solved with one conversation. No female lead acting like she's never seen a man before. The relationship was built on mutual respect, strategy, and loyalty. It was more "I've got your back" than "I'll cry under the peach blossom tree for ten episodes."

The action scenes were well choreographed and looked polished without turning everyone into flying superheroes. The political battles were often just as exciting as the sword fights.

Now for the bits that didn't quite bloom. The middle slowed down a little, some political twists needed better explanations, and the ending felt like someone suddenly remembered they only had one episode left. It wasn't a terrible ending, and it was happy enough, but I wanted another episode or two to let everything breathe instead of sprinting across the finish line. Even the special episode left a few questions hanging.

Overall, Blossoms of Power is one of those dramas that looks expensive, keeps you invested, and reminds you why palace dramas are so addictive. Come for the beautiful costumes. Stay for the clever mind games. Laugh at the Crown Prince's antics. Ignore the occasional plot gymnastics. And when it's over, you'll either be wondering where to find another drama that scratches the same itch, or you'll be glad it's over. There really is no middle ground with this one.

My rating is 9 out of 10. Beautiful to watch, easy to binge, packed with palace chaos, and proof that revenge is best served wearing fabulous robes. It kept me hooked from start to finish, and at no point did I feel like dropping it. Whether you end up loving it or not, it does a good job of keeping you curious enough to see how it all plays out.

if only there wasn't so much silence....

I will give this show a biased 6.5 mainly because the big thing dragging this show down for me is the lack of any music but many other viewers may not agree with the weight at which music holds in a show as I view it. I think the plot of the show was rather logical and does showcase more realistic aspects of the c-drama and c-actors industry. Maybe one exception would be how okay many people were with the leads being a couple when that would not fly in reality but over the plot and actors did a rather satisfactory job.

Now I'm going to move onto what completely dragged this show down for me. When I realised the production company and director was that of 'Secrets that happened on lichi island' I already knew I was not going to enjoy this show. For me personally I could not get past episode 2 of SHOLI purely due to the silence that the audience was left with. Although I did enjoy the cinematography, I felt like I was watching a documentary when watching both bls this company has produced. Honestly I am not impressed at all with the way post-production was completed. You cannot have the background be silent 99% of the time. For me personally, it left me feeling claustrophobic and uncomfortable the whole time which then affected my ability to enjoy the beautiful shots of the tea forests and nature. Honestly it felt like my ears got chopped off and aside from the main leads, NONE of the supporting leads knew how to act. I could literally imagine the blocking of how each seen worked because the side and background characters were unnecesseraly stiff and unnatural. The music and background characters really ruined a show I think has great potential but it just fell short on what it could actually offer unfortunately.

It just keeps getting better

Here's the in-progress review I posted on Viki:

I really loved the first four episodes (especially the 4th, which ratchets up both the comedy and the poignance). It's so nice to see Kim Hye-jun in a straight-up comedy role. I think she's nailing it.

I saw a complaint about her becoming irrational around Lee Chan from someone who seems to have missed the point of the show, which is right there in the title. Spend 5 minutes on YouTube and you can find plenty of examples of people crying, cowering, shrieking, mewling, palpitating, etc. when meeting their idols, so her behavior is 100 percent grounded in reality and not even over-the-top.

On that subject, I really enjoy the jingling bell that signals her "Chan radar". Such a simple but effective and inventive concept.

I'm also loving Kang Hoon, who I don't think I've seen in anything before. He's perfectly cast for the role, transcending the generic tsundere his character could have become. And I like that the ML and FL are already interacting quite a lot. There's something about their chemistry that really clicks for me. The epilogue of episode 2 was perfect.

And it's great to see Cha Woo-min in a main role for a change. He's already been able to show a great mix of charm, humor, tenderness, and exasperation. While it would be nice to finally see him in a ML role, at least he's graduated from supporting roles.

Excellent supporting cast too. I'm always happy to see Kim Ah-young in anything. As usual, she's doing a lot with a small role just through body language and expressions.

Lastly, there's an exciting amount of complications arising between the romantic rivals, misunderstandings, drunken shenanigans, etc. It's a lot to juggle, but the writer and director seem quite up to the challenge from what I've seen. Which is impressive given that they both seem relatively new to the industry.

I'm sure some will complain about tropes like umbrellas, reckless scooter drivers, accidental falls that result in romantic embraces, etc., but I personally like them as long as they're given a fresh spin, which they are here.

QUICK UPDATE: Be sure to skip the "next episode" pop-ups or you might miss the epilogues!

Second story based on a webnovel - steamy, sweet and good chemistry between leads

I am a big fan of the other version of this story, Love Quietly Arrives starring Ma Qian Qian and Sun Yue. thehepburn mentioned this version last year but only felt compelled to watch it recently as I have a reddit column comparing two dramas based on same source. I enjoyed this drama but prefer the other version immensely.

What I liked:
1. Romance - There was love and lust and I loved it. I liked that she didn't not resist ML's advance even from the start. I felt like ML liked to attack FL with kisses.
2. FL characterisation - I liked that she was a qipao designer proud of her work.
3. Acting - I liked the leads' performances. Shi Tong's FL was humble and hardworking without showing off her inheritance. Zhong Zheng added some mystery to his character. Both had good chemistry and I bought their romance.
4. Supporting characters - FL's bestie was awesome. I liked FL's grandmother even though she only appeared at the start of the drama.

What I disliked:
1. Antagonist - I didn't like FL's siblings. ML was silly to think he's deserving of their grandma's inheritance.
2. Smoking - ML smoked a lot throughout the drama. It was a turn off for me.

Favourite scene
When FL found out ML's feelings towards her

Such an interesting series

If you love watching justice series with politics involved then this is for you. For me this series tells me how is the world right now. Even though the series was aired in 2021 it still tells us about the politics and politicians. I have completed watching this drama. Its probably the best for me as I was searching some nice crime stories. Ohh and I don't want to give any spoilers as I feel like most people just wait for that scene to arrive so. But if you are going to read this for romance then I want to tell you to be open-minded and watch. Since I watch BL series too I was getting some sort or bromance..but there is love everywhere. You should definitely try this series.

I really liked this drama it may look bland but if you connect to this drama then it's so meaningful and worthwhile watching. It has everything like comedy, action,a cute love story which actually didn't end even after gaining her memory back as she considered his sacrifice and the love behind lies so it really connected to our emotions and taught us family value that how not only blood pure love and affection can also make a family 🥹.. A journey deep in the woods.

Wood Job is one of those Japanese movies that completely relaxes you and just makes you sink into the couch comfortably. I call these movies "the movies that heal me." I love challenging movies Japan puts out, but at the same time I have a strong love for the rural setting, everyday life in village kind of movies.

First of all, let me tell you this movie is hilarious, and it doesn't even try to be funny; it is so effortless that it makes the experience so enjoyable. It's chaotic with so many characters, but within the chaos you learn a lot. There are moments that make you feel happy and at the same time teach you a lot. In fact, this is the very first time I watched a movie about forestry, and I learned a lot!

So let's get to the plot.

The story follows high school student Yuki, who failed to pass his university entrance test and finds himself having to resit and go to cram school while his friends are moving on. On impulse, he decides to join a forestry program advertised because of the beautiful girl on the pamphlet. He embarks on this journey, traveling to a far region of Japan lost in the mountains. Here, he finds himself in an unfamiliar environment; Here, he is met with so many challenges and difficulties, unfamiliar food and habits, all wrapped in comedy, but at the same time he learns a lot about history, the importance of forestry, and finally finds a place in the world he feels like he belongs.

The movie is just perfect for a slow Sunday; it's so relaxing, and every frame is just spectacular with the background of nature. The storyline is not complicated, and the characters are simple but chaotic, but it's not the type of chaos that overwhelms you; it's more of a warm chaos that touches your heart; like a loud and happy family.
While we follow Yuki's story from learning to do forestry work to finding a purpose, we learn a lot. When Yuki moves to the village, he is met with so many habits and challenges. To start with food, when he had to try snake or learn to wake up early. The whole journey, he is just uncomfortable and has no idea what he is doing and gets yelled at the whole time, but at the same time, you start seeing a shift when he starts following their traditions and embraces the village pride. All of this is wrapped in comedy, so effortlessly funny but warm.

For me, the warmest aspect of this movie was the journey to finding yourself, your dream, and what you stand for. Sometimes dreams will look different from others and unusual, and it will take a whole journey into the woods to understand. The job in the woods changes not only his habits but also who he is.

In terms of cinematography, this was a feast for my eyes, with such stunning background of the Japanese countryside. Watching it was a pleasure to the eyes. Honestly felt like running away to the mountains of Japan; it could really fix all of my problems.

A Refreshing Love Story without annoying leads

I watched this for Johnny Huang but I was hesitant at first because Wang Likun is not someone I like to watch. But I gave it a shot. She is so good in this role that I end up turning into a fan. ML is supposed to be younger and carefree. Johnny Huang is an excellent actor. I have only seen him in macho uniform roles until now. He is so funny and can be silly too. Real good actor.

The charm of this drama is not so much of unique storyline or intense love . It’s more of how down to earth most characters are. The only blip is the annoying waitress who likes his best friend and the ex Boyfriend. He has this terrible sad looking face.

The two unlikely people ML and the older FL actually had a lot of chemistry and turn out to be believable. There is no lovey dovey silly romance between them. She grew to relax around him and he matures around her. I also like his Dad. He is such a misunderstood man. At first you thing he is a villain like but he is just a hardworking biz man who doesn’t realize what he has sacrificed for career success until he fell sick. He is a good man.

The rich heiress is a typical character but what is not nice is her Dad who punishes the ML’s father in biz when ML rejected his spoilt and uncultured daughter. Bad example of rich people behavior.

Overall watch if you want a good story between two unlikely people and good and natural acting by the leads. I love this.

Father-universe some of us may or may not relate

Agent Kim Reactivated is based on the webtoon Manager Kim, where Mr. Kim tries to connect with his teen daughter Min-ji, but later finds out his daughter goes missing. His friends, Jin-cheol and Han-su also help him while they face consequences of identity reveal and Ju Kang-chan's reckless actions of wanting Min-ji dead because of his daughter, Hye-ri who got in a fight with Min-ji after insulting her as 'motherless'. North Korean agent, new 66 and the SMD go looking for Mr. Kim after he is suspected involved in suspicious activity.

I have always thought how different the drama and webtoon would be if Min-ji were to be dead instead of surviving a near-death experience, since she bled a lot from that brick hit. Imagine if she got head and skull trauma and actually died. Everything after episode 5, where Mr. Kim first enters the cold warehouse sees his daughter dead. He'd definitely take her body back, but I do imagine how there would be an impact after episode 5. You can even change it to deep coma if it's possible enough.

In my opinion, this k-drama including the webtoon which I plan to read everyday has become my permanent comfort drama.
I don't have a supporting father, he's alive but he opposes me, even when someone insults me or when I am struggling. Mr. Kim is a kind of father who's the exact opposite of mine, he's a loving father to Min-ji, promising his dead wife to take care of their daughter and taking responsibility himself. Even after getting on his knees in the principal's office, to which Min-ji shouted at him for, he MADE Kang-chan get on his knees to apologize to Min-ji.
His pride was Min-ji. To me, Mr. Kim is like a fictional father figure and I imagine myself as Min-ji in the parallel universe. The drama itself made me feel loved by a fictional father, including the uncles. I also have an uncle, but he's just like my father. Han-su and Jin-cheol are also like an uncle figure to me. The friendship between the trio is also really pretty, they are always there for each other even if the other doesn't want to, they try to find and excuse to help the other (Jin-cheol and Han-su in episode 9 when Mr. Kim gets captured).

As for the relationship between Min-ji and Hye-ri, I like how Min-ji is smart and stands up for herself. Not in the way where she fights Hye-ri, but she does not tolerate unnecessary disturbance, especially from hye-ri for no reason. Hye-ryeong irritates me even though she's a minor character who becomes use of Park Kang-seong (Yeong-gwang's brother), Hye-ryeong seems to be a two-faced person as well.

The villains are different, Kang-chan and Hye-ri's downfall makes me wonder what Mrs. Ju (Hye-ri's mother and Kang-chan's wife) does not because of how she realizes why Min-ji even beat up Hye-ri in the first place that she almost died, but the impact that puts into her mental health. The ending seems to leave a door open for season 2. Maybe Mr. Kim hasn't finished his fist job yet. Jung-dae, after stabbing Kang-chan might end up being an independent street thug. Him and Nam already have the biggest hate relationship, especially the contact saving of 'Ju Kang-chan's Lackey' and 'Worthless Thug', it was so direct.

Overall, this k-drama will forever be my 10/10 rating and comfort drama. I recommend you to watch, both for plot and family-related tropes. Especially if you probably have never felt father's love like me.

Love you Agen Kim Reactivated <3

Está me surpreendendo

Dream to You

E preciso falar do protagonista masculino! 👀❤️
