Young Love

I had been putting off this show for some time, since there are lots of interesting ones that came up this year. And one hesitation is perhaps the context of high school love which we know is messy and immature. Am glad I saw the transformation of the main characters as they navigate their own feelings for each other and make peace with the past.

Though this is just 8 episodes, we see the changes in the way they respond to each other as adults. I am not buying the attitude of Kang Ho Young's mom, that she has to threaten her son just to return with her to the US. Yet love conquers all and a compromise is the only solution for Hong Ju and Ho Young.

I like the 2nd couple, the woman being more forward and open, while the guy being awkward and shy. I think the guy is shy as he doesn't feel worthy to be the vice principal's son-in-law in the future. Nevertheless, they pass the hurdle and need not hide their relationship in school.

I like the friendships they retained from high school till adulthood, that though they may have their quirks, they still stuck together. I am glad there is Sang Pil who tried to ground the 2 girls. As for the former love of Hong Ju, he is total jerk for trying to hold on and had not been honest with her. This goes to show the different ways of handling friendship and even lovers.

The other side story of Uncle Wook's love story seem unnecessary. I could not fully understand as to the root cause of his first love's attitude towards him. This uncle is way more immature than Hong Young and his friends.

Did I enjoy watching it? It was ok, but not over the moon.
Will I recommend this? Perhaps yes, if you want to watch something light and short.
Will I rewatch? Not really.
However, having dramas like this is a good break from the action-packed one.

✨A Feast for the Eyes, a Slow Burn for the Heart✨

Rewritten review because my first one was written under the influence of HeYu’s face card😂 The bias remains, unfortunately. This was a delicious treat because I’m here for the ML, and I’m not gonna pretend I’m not.😂

That being said, this drama is definitely not without its flaws, so let’s get into it.

THE GOOD STUFF:

✨ The face cards are absolutely lethal.
This drama is serving some serious eye candy. I am FED, bruh. And HeYu? Daaaamn. Man is looking ridiculously good in this style. I absolutely ate it up. No notes. None. Zero.😂

✨ Two calculating leads who actually know what they're doing.
We have the ML pretending to be frail and weak while secretly being a full-blown puppet master behind the scenes, and the FL is cunning, calculating, fierce, and very much not interested in romance. She is here to get shit DONE.

✨ The rebirth storyline.
Our FL starts off married into a loveless marriage with one of the princes, only for her family to be annihilated in a power struggle. She then arranges her own death and, in the process, takes the rival clan down with her by framing them for her murder.

Then she gets stuck in limbo for three years, because apparently even death needs a waiting period.😂

Eventually, the Commandery Princess from the northwest is assassinated, and thanks to some celestial event, our FL ends up inhabiting her body while retaining the Princess' memories. So we basically have two-ish people - or perhaps 1.5 people - sharing one body, although let's be honest, the FL is very much holding the steering wheel. Having already experienced what it's like to lose everything and be completely at the mercy of others, she's determined this time around to climb all the way to the top and secure enough power that she will never again be in a position to suffer the same fate.

✨ Nonchalant FL x TOTAL CHALANT ML.
And this was fun. Watching this man throw dignity, subtlety, and probably several brain cells out the window in his quest to win the heart of this ice princess was genuinely entertaining.😂

✨ The chemistry.
The leads have great chemistry, especially once their feelings become mutual, and the payoff is very enjoyable. We got some really nice kisses too. First kiss in episode 27, so bro really waited until the end of civilization.😭😂

✨ Second Lead couple
We also get a very lovable second couple, including one of the most well-done crossdressing/disguised-as-a-man portrayals I’ve seen in a while, along with a genuinely lovely romance. I really enjoyed them... only for them to basically peace out in episode 26 and only return in ep.34😭, but it's a wholesome, happy ending for their love story, so there's that.

✨ The adaptation.
I also really appreciated how closely the drama stuck to the original novel. Don't get me wrong, I actually like when adaptations take creative liberties, and there are definitely cases where the adaptation ends up being even better than the source material. But in this case, the novel was already pretty damn good (albeit very long), so I was happy to see the drama stick relatively close to it and preserve most of what worked in the original story. That doesn't happen nearly as often as it should, so I definitely have to give the drama credit for that.

NOW FOR THE "BUT..."

⏳ The pacing.

The first few episodes were pretty packed and fast-paced, although some things were thrown at the audience without much explanation. Who is who? What is what? Why is this happening? Good luck, babes.😂

After things settled, though, the pacing slowed down a lot. There were plenty of shots that felt unnecessarily long, seemingly just to make the characters - especially the leads - look pretty. And listen, I am absolutely not complaining about pretty people staring lovingly at each other. I support this government. But it was used a little too often.

Since the romance is clearly the main course and everything else is garnish, the plot felt like it wasn't going anywhere for a good chunk of the drama. After a few enjoyable episodes, the story started to drag, and I definitely felt the pacing issues.
To be fair, the last five episodes definitely picked up the pace again. Things got much more intense and political, and there was basically always something happening, so the ending stretch was definitely quite engaging and eventful.

👑 The FL and everyone's collective obsession with her.

This is probably my most controversial opinion, and honestly, I’m still somewhere between love and hate. I really like many of her traits- she is smart, calculating, fierce, and capable - but her arrogance sometimes really rubbed me the wrong way. While she does experience some beautiful character growth, there were moments in the first half when I was dangerously close to despising her. 😂😭 And the sheer number of people obsessed with her was... a lot. 😂 Like, girl, what exactly are you putting in the water? The devotion she inspires borders on concerning. At some point, I was like, "Okay, we get it. Everyone is obsessed with her. Can we calm down?" 😂


FINAL THOUGHTS:

Anyways, there will never be a one-size-fits-all kind of drama because ultimately, different people watch for different reasons.

And I, for one, thoroughly enjoyed one of the most shamelessly and ridiculously obsessed MLs I’ve seen this year.😂 If you’re looking for an equally balanced romance where both leads are equally down bad from the start, though... yeah, this ain't it. We spend approximately 3/4 of this drama watching the ML be shamelessly in love, chasing this woman around, and generally making himself everyone's problem.😂 Sometimes I genuinely felt bad for him because, my brother, STAND UP.
But he does eventually succeed in melting her icy heart, and watching the FL turn into a total babygirl for her husband was honestly adorable. The character development there was very satisfying.

The SML's screentime definitely overstayed its welcome. Jeremy plays the creepy roles very well, lmfao, but by the end I was like, sir, please leave.☠️

And yes, we do get a happy ending, despite the ML's poisoning storyline constantly trying to convince us otherwise. We did, however, have to endure three whole episodes without the ML, which felt approximately 47 years long. I did not sign up for this separation. I was promised HeYu.😂 He returns at the end of ep.36 and we also got a lovely extra episode 🤗

Overall, I had a lot of fun with this drama. It has gorgeous visuals, great chemistry, clever and calculating characters, a fun rebirth setup, and one spectacularly down bad man carrying the romance on his back for most of the runtime.

It definitely has its flaws, but if you’re here for the chemistry, the eye candy, and watching a shameless man slowly dismantle the emotional walls of an ice princess, then honestly... you’re probably gonna have a pretty damn good time.

A sensitive plot handled well.

This series is very cute and manages to handle a difficult plot well.

Student teacher romances make me uncomfortable for all the usual reasons. Age gaps are a power imbalance; the addition of the student teacher dynamic adds to the imbalance. This story managed to navigate that well, without crossing lines. The teacher set a boundary and maintained it until the relationship wouldn't be a problem.

I really liked how they showed things first from the student's view and then revisit those moments from the teacher's view.

While I still am not a fan of age gap/power imbalance/student-teacher/boss-subordinate tropes in romance, this story is presented well.

Once it gets going, it's like a fast action ride

Unsure if there is the concept of a Summer K-Drama like Hollywood does with big movie release but AKR fits that. Its a action filled ride. Its got touches of emotion (Father / Daughter), dashes of Comedy from this friends and as noted lot of action, like a mix of Jason Bourne & The Fugitive for a movie comparasion.

Some thoughts on the conclusion and just picking on aspects that would make this show reach even higher levels.

Potential spoilers going forward

the ML (Agent Kim) is definately a broken man, he is humble and reserved and losing your wife to raise your newborn is a life event that would change anyone. But he does his best always for his daughter, even though she is going through typical teenage drama and not happy her Father isn't 'cool' or successful.

When the situation at school crosses the line with the spoiled daughter of a (corrupt) business abd makes his daughter suffer , she is upset her Father doesn't defend her and just allows the CEO & Daughter to belittle them. Then the CEO's Daughter decides to take things further and the Father 'wakes up' when his Daughter goes misssing.

AK pulls in his friends from previous military service to help locate his Daughter and the bulk of part 1 of the show is spent on the search and doing whatever he can to find her. This was the show at its best and ends in a very good fight with the CEO father. All is well ... then part 2 of the show kicks in which I thought was a weaker story line. Its mostly protecting & rescueing the old military training general (who I thought was one of the big villians).

I found the last Episode a mixed bag, some things were wrapped up way too fast and left me wanting more. Overall the majority of the storylines were resolved and this show if it doesn't get Season 2 is all wrapped up with an ending.

Some thoughts & questions

I was hoping for a finale confrontation between the CEO Father's daughter and Agent Kim's daughter, it wraps up the story line, but I don't feel Agent Kim's daughter got her justice, there is nothing on her school sqaud lackeys who should also be punished.

There was never explaination why the head of SMD hated Agent Kim so much, outside mad he was given freedom years ago. He comes around in the last episode. Assume Agent Kim has the SD Card with the missle information but its never shown.

Did the CEO Father die from the knife attack at the end? During the early episodes they showed him as ruthless and tough but he became just a weak nutcase. A finale fight scene would've been good, I thought his MMA cage would've had a different fight scene but it worked.

Sorry not a lot of detail in my review and this show is best viewed as a thrill ride, I'll likely watch again as the flow waiting a week between episodes broke the flow somewhat.

It was hard to grade music for this series as outside the song at the ending every episode there is not much music in this show. Overall all the actors did a great job.

It's not like we don't have friends, it's just we got used to the loneliness... I'm glad we met!

This reality show was really something else. It's not famous among the kdrama watchers because the cast aren't idols. It's not promoted by bigger platforms and, most importantly, the cast was all close to 40 and 40-year-olds (1985s and 1987s), so most of the current generation of drama watchers wouldn't even know them. But there's still charm to it.

This wasn't a game show, but a life retreat show where the cast were put in a house with other celebrities who were complete strangers to each other. These people were all single, in their (almost) 40s and living alone. Behind all the work schedules and daily drama of life there was a distinct, hidden loneliness they never knew they felt, because being alone was all that they knew. We all know how hard it is to make friends when you're older. Everything gets buried under the pressure of life and time; you're only left with your own company.

But when all these almost polar opposite people were put together, they brought forward and unleashed the chaos that we, the audience and the cast could ever imagine. They went through daily ups and downs, happiness, sadness clearing their bucket list tasks and left us with loads of joy, laughter and tears. They found a lost family they could never make. Just enjoying their little moments together and exchanging "let's eat!" , "what are you doing?" , "wanna hangout?", "welcome home!" , "don't skip meals, take care!" with each other gave them the meaning of togetherness and belonging that they were yearning all along. They left the house with lifelong priceless memories and precious friends.

I would 100% recommend this if you want to watch something that is not scripted and want to just enjoy a heartwarming and yet chaotic episode of 10 days of daily adventure, then this is for you.
I'm really glad I watched it. Felt like it healed something in me.

Good take on an old classic genre

I'm not normally a fan of the zombie genre (leave that to the vampires) but waited in anticipation for this film as they're normally done better outside of the western market. And I wasn't disappointed. It was fast paced and for me, not long enough - almost as if, it was only just getting started before it finished - I wonder if there will be a Colony 2.

I wasn't interested in any emotional bonding or back stories of the characters, I wasn't there to see a family drama so the extremely brief, 'bullying' back story in my opinion was utterly pointless and who cares?! You're trapped in a building where most people are rabid zombies within seconds, becoming more intelligent by the minute, and you're running for your life - 'ain't no-one got time for heart to hearts!!

The plot was engaging, trying to find the solution, the missing link, and the continual evolution of the zombies, that would have been interesting to see how far that could have progressed but, as I said, it ended far too soon with far more potential to explore.

Started Strong but runs out of gas

First, I like Chen Du Ling when she played as the wife of Huang Yao Shi in the 9 episode remake of the Condor Heroes spinoff, she's very loveable

I'm not a fan of second live as it's very unrealistic i must say but in here they've done it since the first episode (no spoiler, it's in the trailer) and unlike Princess Royal they didn't dwell on the "I know it all too much" in this series.

The first few episodes got me hooked, the plot was superb and top notch although quite convulated it's still beliavable. But as the series goes on the plot, despite brilliant potrayal from the supporting cast (Deng Yi and Xia) seems too convulated, the gambit was too "deus ex Machina" especially the last arc gambit was very very unbelieavble.

I don't think as smart as Zhuge Liang he could predict what the enemy will do to you, what threat they'll do to you, and relies on the enemy will lean close enough you'll hit him with your poison coated dagger.

But it is what it is, a Chinese Drama. Seen it all, coming to age, rose to power, almost tragedy, flipping the table.

The Male protagonist despite good loooking was one dimensional, supremely loyal, undefeated, and somehow as always has a plot armor thicker than the Chinese Wall. Chen Du Ling tried her best to show emotions but her "fierce looking" stare just wasn't fierce enough and her "oh I'm so cute" is still trying to act like female Zhuge Liang.

But overall, not a bad Series, it's only 24 episode and I think it's 4 episode longer as I'm getting tired with the "oh... another plot on top of that other plot's plot's plot"?

Would I rewatch it? I don't think there's anything remarkable once you've seen it once, the dialog are not that deep even for my basic chinese understanding.

The East Palace Review: Top-Tier Acting That Will Make You Feel Everything

Okay, so I literally just finished watching The East Palace, which is a new dark fantasy drama on Netflix, and I have to talk about it! The storyline is honestly so good, but what really surprised me was the acting. It just hits different.
Here is why I am completely obsessed with it:

The Acting is Top-Tier 🎭
* Cho Seung-woo (The King):Bro, his acting skills completely blew me away! He plays the King in this series. He is already one of my absolute favorites because I watched him in The King's Doctor (aka Horse Doctor) when I was little. He was also amazing in Stranger and Sisyphus: The Myth. Seeing him here just proved again how crazy good he is.

* Jang Young-nam (The Queen Dowager):The actress who plays the Queen Dowager—the King's stepmom—is insanely talented. It is wild because she is playing a character way older than her actual age, and she absolutely nails it.

* The Main Leads: Nam Joo-hyuk and Roh Yoon-seo are the main stars. They literally make you feel all of their heavy emotions right through the screen. And pretty good chemistry btwn these two.

Honestly, this whole drama felt like actual art to me. I don’t know why, but I have never felt this exact way while watching a K-drama before. The raw emotion and the vibe are just so unique.

TL;DR: If you want a drama with insanely good acting that will make you feel things on a whole new level, you need to watch this ASAP. 10/10 recommend!

A reluctant hero trapped in the palace’s deadly secrets

The East Palace immediately captured my attention with a plot filled with palace secrets, suspicious deaths and growing opposition to the current king. The deeper the story goes, the clearer it becomes that almost everyone within the palace is hiding something and uncovering the truth always comes at a dangerous price.

What fascinates me most is Gu Cheon. I admire how he is forced to sacrifice himself countless times in his pursuit of the truth, despite never choosing to become involved in the royal family’s deadly affairs. He does not blindly respect authority or treat the royal family as untouchable simply because of their status. Instead, he remains cold, realistic, sharp-tongued and wonderfully sarcastic.

His detached attitude makes perfect sense: he was dragged into a mess that was never his responsibility, yet he repeatedly risks everything to expose what is hidden beneath the palace’s polished surface. Beneath his sarcasm and apparent indifference, there is a man carrying far more responsibility and pain than he ever asked for. That contrast makes him an especially compelling character and one I cannot stop rooting for.

Saeng Gang’s character was well balanced. Although she could be selfish and manipulative when using Gu Cheon’s abilities to uncover the palace’s secrets, her vulnerability as an abandoned princess made her actions understandable. This contrast gave her depth and made the bond she developed with Gu Cheon feel even more meaningful.

The visual side of this drama is equally impressive. The cinematography is beautifully executed, with every frame feeling carefully composed to strengthen the dark and mysterious atmosphere of the palace. The makeup is also on an exceptionally high level, not only making the characters look striking but actively helping to tell the story. Every wound, exhausted expression, and unsettling detail adds to the tension and makes the danger surrounding the characters feel even more real.

Most viewers will probably adore the creepily cute Ggeomeoksali, who brings some much-needed humour and lightness to an otherwise dark and bloody story.

Overall, this horror drama is filled with creepy, impressively designed creatures that lead to plenty of tense, frightening and excellently choreographed fight scenes. As someone who is usually a complete chicken when it comes to horror, I was surprised by how much joy this drama still brought me.

The East Palace: Beautiful, Emotional, and Hoping for Season 2

As someone who watches almost every historical K-drama, I really enjoyed The East Palace. The visuals and VFX were top-class, and the fantasy scenes looked amazing. I also loved the costumes—they were beautiful and perfectly suited the historical setting.

The story was engaging overall, although one or two episodes in the middle felt a bit slow and boring. Some parts of the story were also predictable, but it didn't affect my enjoyment too much.

The chemistry between the leads was one of the biggest highlights for me. They had amazing chemistry, but I honestly wanted more romantic moments between them.

The ending was so emotional. That final hug between the leads was beautifully done and left a lasting impression on me. Thankfully, both leads were alive, which made the ending emotional rather than heartbreaking.

Overall, I really enjoyed this drama despite a few slow episodes, and I sincerely hope it gets a second season.

great but not til the very last drop

The premise of this series was ridiculous in the first place, but the entertainment factor filled with Die Hard-style action sequences, superhuman strength and recovery, and plenty of comedic moments should have been the perfect formula for a great Netflix action flick. I felt like I was riding a roller coaster with plenty of highs, lows, twists, and turns, only to realize that the tracks ended at the edge of a cliff. Just like the lyrics from The Gambler, the writers should have known “when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em.” I guess this series became a victim of ending fatigue, or perhaps even viewer fatigue.

The acting, of course, is superb, as expected from such a large ensemble of veteran Korean actors. So Ji Sub is perfectly cast as the former spy turned fiercely protective father, while Choi Dae Hoon and Yoon Kyung Ho provide impeccable comedic support that keeps the series from taking itself too seriously.

What baffles me is the inept portrayal of the secret intelligence organization. The storyline can be forgiven for borrowing heavily from the Taken playbook, but the final episodes pushed excess to another level. For a show that was already delightfully over the top, adding even more chaos became too much of a good thing.

Still, despite its flaws, Agent Kim Reactivated never forgets its primary mission: to entertain. It succeeds with charismatic performances, exhilarating action, and plenty of laughs. I just wish the writers had exercised a little more restraint and delivered a finale that matched the fun and momentum of its earlier episodes instead of trying to outdo itself at every turn.

*Speed and Love* is a beautifully written romance driven by emotion, longing, and natural chemistry. The relationship between the leads felt genuine, and every reunion and quiet moment carried so much meaning. I especially loved how the romance developed with patience rather than relying on unnecessary drama. The performances, emotional depth, and heartfelt storytelling made it an easy binge. While it didn't quite reach the level of my all-time favorites because of the overly childish acting by the FL, it's still one of the most memorable modern romance C-dramas I've watched.

Mature, unique and fun to watch

Filing for Love

I really enjoyed this drama/ rom com. It is a much more mature drama than the sickly sweet overdone romances , first love and teen bulling , angst ridden child hood cliches that seem to constantly bombard the k drama scene in the last 12 months. For me the story was unique and refreshing.

The world of corporate politics never looked so sexy and scandalous. I don’t know if Korean companies actually audit ‘Public Morality’ or not but it is an interesting concept from a westerner’s perspective. While people having affairs at work is not acceptable, people are more often or not given their privacy unless the affair has secondary misdemeanours directly affecting others (discrimination) or financial loss to the company. The idea of a hot line to audit to report affairs or the release of ambiguous photos to staff / management generally seems more like invasion of privacy and defamation. Drama Touched upon this but not followed up this issue unfortunately.

I sometimes cringed at how intrusive Audit and colleagues pried into people’s lives especially when no wrongdoing was evident or found. I also was disgusted by how quickly the team and others condemned and gossiped about their colleagues without knowing the truth. Is emotional cheating a thing if not acted upon? Lots of morally questionable behaviour to think about.

The Acting by all characters were brilliant. The characters were intelligent, real and generally likeable. Even Secretary xx was more pitiful rather than a malicious horrible despised character. The chemistry between Gong Myoung and Shin Hae Sun was believable and their first kiss is just how I imagine and remember attraction and desire to be. Their relationship developed in a modern way based on partnership and shared goals. They were both experienced in previous relationships and this showed. As a result it felt balanced rather than an immature one of pushing and pulling and demanding perfection but not giving it.

The pace and stories underpinning each episode were all intriguing and kept me watching without hitting a fast forward button.

Episode 11 jump 3 months annoyed me at first but led to a new case after the fallout from previous case.

Episode 12 wrapped up loose ends nicely. For me it was not rushed but a satisfying conclusion.

Congratulations to all the crew and cast for a great drama.
