? Green Tea ML ?

Saw short clips of this drama on YouTube and decided to give it a try. Usually, it takes me at least 2–3 episodes to decide whether a drama is worth continuing, but this one was an instant go from the very first episode, which is pretty rare for me.

This is my first time watching a drama starring He Yu, and I think he did a great job portraying Xiao Huayong. Huayong quickly became my favourite character because it's rare to see such a "green tea" and shameless male lead in a full-length Chinese drama instead of a short drama. The way he would shamelessly act weak and faint at any moment was absolutely hilarious 😂

Beyond his green tea and playful personality, Huayong is also incredibly intelligent. I liked how he managed to keep both his martial arts abilities and his palace intelligence network hidden without arousing anyone's suspicion. He wasn't just pretending to be weak but he was always several steps ahead of everyone else.

Ep 31 was probably my favourite. Huayong was genuinely happy about becoming a father, yet at the same time felt guilty for leaving Xi He to deal with the aftermath alone. Despite knowing that he would never get the chance to watch his child grow up, he had already planned everything, even thinking about their education and choosing a teacher up until the age of fifteen. That scene was both heartwarming and heartbreaking 🥹

I also loved watching Xi He gradually change from someone who was cold, guarded, and scheming into someone who truly loved Huayong. One of my favourite moments was when she said that if their child were a son, she hoped he would grow up to be like his father. To me, that's one of the greatest compliments a wife could give her husband.

My biggest dissatisfaction was how Huayong returned in ep 36. I wish ep 33–36 had shown how he faked his death, survived the poison, and recovered before making his return. Since Xi He is supposed to be highly intelligent, I also expected her to notice that something felt off during the funeral and start suspecting that Huayong was still alive. That would've made the reunion much more satisfying.

I also felt that the Fifth Prince's obsession with Xi He dragged on for too long in the final episodes. While the drama explained that he was willing to die for her, those scenes became repetitive and a little frustrating to watch. I was also hoping the Ninth Prince would end up with Yingruo.

Overall, I really enjoyed this drama, and Xiao Huayong is definitely the highlight for me. I loved how he balanced his playful, shameless side with his calm, intelligent, and serious side. He's such a refreshing male lead, and I'll definitely be checking out more of He Yu's dramas after this.

Underdog drama with well deserved high praise and ratings on Douban

This drama landed on my watchlist after one of these Tiktoks about underrated shows sparked my interest.
Zero regrets. Quite the opposite.
I finished it a few days ago and I am still in a mood, where I want to climb on a rooftop and tell through a megaphone everyone with functional ears, how surprisingly amazing that drama was and that they should hurry to watch it, because it deserves so much more recognition.

Is it one of these dramas, where everything is perfect?
No.
It obviously operated on a small budget and it didn't come with an idol cast to drew in the viewership by names alone.
But that's the only draw back of this show.

While it starts a little slow and takes its time to introduce the characters, if you give it a moment, then the unfolding mystery will get you hooked and the storytelling just keeps serving until the finale.
Not one dull moment in between. 👏👏👏👏

The plot is plotting with unexpected twists, which will have you guessing, what to expect next, nearly until the end. With a bunch of intriguing protagonists, whose character development and growing friendship was satisfying to watch. You will fall in love with these guys and root hard for them to succeed.
It is really a unique mix of mystery/sci-fi/wuxia drama.
In short:
Story top.
Acting top.
OST top.
The smaller budget got sometimes more obvious during the CGI scenes. But that didn't take from the overall experience.

Perhaps one word to the male lead.
In a more conventional drama he might be better suited as a supporting actor. But here it works out.
All leading characters were evenly written into the story and felt as important main characters.
I loved it.
I highly recommend it.

Good series but way too many characters

I watched this series right after finishing the available eps of When oranges fall and met AlmondProgress.

The story itself is good! The school life and slice of life part of the series is really comforting and the serious talks about sexuality acceptance and family issues are a good combo that make the story more realistic.

Despite the amazing work of all the cast and production, there are some flaws. I haven't read the original novel so I wouldn't know if Noh's and Phun's relationship on the first few episodes was supposed to be like this, it felt a little rushed since Phun had a girlfriend and was immediately hitting on Noh and ignoring that fact. There are way too much characters, too many storylines happening at once, it's hard to keep up with each of them. Not only that but the introduction of characters at the start was a bit confusing.

I think the relationship between Lee and Aim should've been more explored and so should've been Noh and Yuri's and Noh and Ohm's.

Pacing and Story Buildup is alright, Just the story is a little bit CONFUSING sometimes :3

If you want to watch a drama with a complicated situation, then watch this. However, if the story gets a little bit confusing, it will be hard to understand because it has an extremely low exposure to socmed. You will need to be extra careful to small details to understand and not skip or click forward button XD or else you'll get confused. I think some of the scences have gap but it is not a hindrance at all ig.

On the brighter side, the ML had a good character (but also a red flag ig bcs of microcheating but reasonable XD) and their chemistry is just alright, as for my opinion. The buildup of the story is good as well as the acting (not too cringey as the other says).

She Saved Him First, Then They Spent Lifetimes Saving Each Other

I came into The Last Immortal with one simple expectation.

I wanted another beautiful xianxia after falling in love with Ancient Love Poetry. Knowing that this story follows Yuan Qi, the son of Bai Jue and Shang Gu, naturally made me curious. I wanted to see what kind of person the child of two True Gods would become.

What I never expected was that before I could even meet the legendary Phoenix Queen Feng Yin...

I would completely fall in love with a little Water Condensation Beast named A Yin.

That, in my opinion, is the greatest strength of this drama.

One question I constantly see on MDL is:
"Do I need to watch Ancient Love Poetry first?"
The answer is no, because The Last Immortal tells a complete story on its own.

However, if you've watched Ancient Love Poetry, the emotional experience becomes much richer.
Understanding who Bai Jue and Shang Gu are, why Yuan Qi grew up the way he did, and why becoming a True God was never something he wanted adds an entirely different layer to his character.

Without that background, Yuan Qi may initially come across as a lazy young immortal who refuses to cultivate.

With that background...

You realize he spent his childhood watching godhood take everything away from the people he loved.

For Yuan Qi, becoming a True God never represented glory.

It represented loneliness.

Responsibility.

Sacrifice.

Loss.

That subtle character writing completely changed how I viewed him.

One of the biggest misconceptions about this drama is believing that it begins with an overpowered male lead protecting a weak heroine.

It doesn't.

In fact...

A Yin saves Gu Jin first.

During Feng Yin's Nirvana, part of the Fire Phoenix Essence leaves the egg to protect the young Gu Jin when he is powerless and being bullied.

Unfortunately, Hua Shu happens to be wearing red that day, allowing her to steal the credit for saving him.

That single misunderstanding quietly becomes the foundation of nearly every tragedy that follows.

The Phoenix Essence is absorbed into Gu Jin's body.

Feng Yin's rebirth fails.

Instead...

She is reborn as the adorable Water Condensation Beast we come to know as A Yin.

Looking back after finishing all forty episodes, I genuinely admire how something that seemed like a small misunderstanding in Episode 1 continued to shape every major event until the finale.

At first, I thought this drama would simply be another adventure.

Collecting the scattered Immortal Essence.

Visiting different realms.

Meeting new allies.

Watching two people slowly fall in love.

The beginning feels surprisingly light, funny, and charming.

Gu Jin and A Yin constantly tease each other.

Their chemistry develops naturally through companionship rather than instant romance.

Unlike many xianxia dramas that rely on endless misunderstandings between the main couple, their relationship grows because they spend time together, protect each other, and slowly become each other's most important person.

That peaceful atmosphere made what came later hurt even more.

If A Yin is the emotional heart of this story, then Hua Shu is undoubtedly the catalyst behind much of its tragedy.

I rarely dislike a character this intensely.

Not because she was written as a typical jealous rival.

But because every decision she made was driven by ambition.

She stole another person's kindness.

She manipulated trust.

She repeatedly chose status over sincerity.

The moment she secretly punished A Yin and shattered her Immortal Core without anyone else's knowledge completely changed the trajectory of the story.

The most heartbreaking part wasn't A Yin's death.

It was realizing that Gu Jin genuinely believed he had already prepared everything necessary to save her.

He spent years of cultivation refining an elixir that he believed would protect her life.

He simply never knew that Hua Shu had already destroyed the very foundation that allowed A Yin to survive.

That realization broke me just as much as it broke him.

A Yin became one of my favorite xianxia heroines.

She begins as someone underestimated by almost everyone.

She isn't born powerful.

She isn't respected.

She isn't treated as special.

She is cheerful.

Kind.

Stubborn.

Sometimes impulsive.

But every hardship she experiences slowly shapes her into someone extraordinary.

The White Hair Arc remains one of the most emotional moments in the drama.

When she sacrificed almost all of her remaining lifespan to recover the final Immortal Essence fragments, I genuinely had to pause.

Everyone believed Water Condensation Beasts lived for a hundred years.

Then we discovered the devastating truth.

Because of the ancient war...

Their lifespan had already been drastically shortened.

She didn't have decades left.

She barely had one year.

Watching her continue smiling despite quietly accepting her own fate reminded me why Zhao Lusi continues to be one of the strongest emotional actresses of her generation.

Then came Daze Mountain.

This was the arc where I realized The Last Immortal was no longer simply a romance.

It became a story about injustice.

A Jiu's tragedy hit me unexpectedly hard.

He wasn't evil.

He wasn't a traitor.

He was possessed.

Yet before anyone even searched for the truth, people had already decided he was guilty.

The same happened to A Yin.

Again and again, the kindest people became the easiest people to blame.

That recurring theme made the emotional weight of the story feel much more grounded than many fantasy dramas.

I'll admit something.

There was a period where I was genuinely angry with Gu Jin.

Especially after he severed the Love Thread.

Like many viewers, I questioned why he kept choosing responsibility over the woman he loved.

But as the story progressed...

My perspective completely changed.

One thing I appreciate most about this drama is that it never asks us to forgive Yuan Qi simply because he's the male lead.

Instead...

It allows him to earn that forgiveness.

Piece by piece.

Choice by choice.

Sacrifice by sacrifice.

By the second half, we slowly discover everything he had quietly been carrying.

Reviving Daze Mountain.

Using his own Spirit God Origin.

Giving away the last remaining essence needed for Feng Yin's rebirth.

Never asking for recognition.

Never explaining himself.

Never expecting gratitude.

The moment his body slowly began fading because he had exhausted every last piece of his Spirit God power was the exact moment I stopped seeing him as someone who made mistakes...

and started seeing him as someone desperately trying to atone for them.

To me, that is what separates Yuan Qi from many other xianxia male leads.

His redemption isn't built on words.

It's built on consequences.

Feng Yin's rebirth was another brilliant writing decision.

Initially, I was excited to finally meet the legendary Phoenix Queen.

Ironically...

When that moment finally arrived...

I didn't want A Yin to disappear anymore.

That says everything about how successfully the writers developed her character.

Fortunately, they made the right decision.

Feng Yin never erased A Yin.

She carried every memory.

Every sacrifice.

Every lesson.

Every emotion.

The playful Water Condensation Beast became part of the dignified Phoenix Queen rather than being replaced by her.

That made the rebirth feel rewarding instead of tragic.

Visually, the drama consistently impressed me.

The CGI, while not perfect, remained beautiful throughout.

The different realms each had their own identity.

The Phoenix sequences looked majestic.

The costumes perfectly reflected every clan's culture and status.

I also have to mention the soundtrack.

The emotional scenes would not have hit nearly as hard without it.

Several moments stayed with me long after the episode ended simply because the music elevated the emotions so naturally.

Performance-wise, both leads delivered exactly what their characters required.

Wang Anyu surprised me the most.

His performance relies on restraint rather than exaggerated emotional breakdowns.

The quiet guilt.

The subtle sadness.

The exhausted smile whenever he tried reassuring Feng Yin despite knowing he was slowly disappearing.

Those moments carried incredible emotional weight.

Meanwhile, Zhao Lusi once again proved why she remains one of the strongest actresses in fantasy romance.

Playing A Yin and Feng Yin as two distinct yet connected identities could easily have felt artificial.

Instead, she made the transition completely believable.

By the end, I no longer saw two different characters.
I simply saw one woman who had grown through unimaginable pain.

My only criticism concerns the ending.

Not because it wasn't happy.

It absolutely was.

The explanation for Yuan Qi's return made sense within the story's mythology.

Unlike some xianxia endings that rely on vague miracles, this one actually respected its own world-building.

However...

After making us cry for almost forty episodes...

The reunion lasted only a few minutes.

Like many viewers on MDL, I couldn't help wishing we had just one more episode.

One episode showing their peaceful life together.

No more sacrifices.

No more separations.

Just happiness.

After everything they endured...

They deserved it.

So did we.

Looking back now...

I thought I was watching the story of a Phoenix Queen's rebirth.

Instead...

I witnessed two people spending an entire lifetime saving each other.

A Yin saved Gu Jin first.

Gu Jin spent the rest of the story trying to save her.

Then Feng Yin tried saving Yuan Qi.

And Yuan Qi quietly gave away his very existence to protect her and the Three Realms.

That beautiful cycle of sacrifice became the soul of the entire drama.

The Last Immortal isn't simply another xianxia filled with immortal realms and magical creatures.

It's a story about growing up.

Learning from mistakes.

Choosing responsibility without losing compassion.

And discovering that true love isn't measured by promises...

It's measured by the sacrifices two people willingly make for each other, even when no one else ever knows.

Despite all the tears, frustration, heartbreak, and emotional damage...

I would gladly experience this journey all over again.

why? just why?

the first act is enjoyable, a decent story, some significant hole in the plot but I thought, "eh, whatever, its a short drama, it seems like fun". the second act sloooooooowwwwssss down and keeps you waiting for any character development and plot beyond the leads, "okay, not the best show, but it's not trying to be so hopefully the ending will wrap it up nicely and this will be a classic mid tier show". WRONG! SO F****** WRONG! the third act is where the show totally falls off. you only continue watching just to see the moms domestic abuse and criminal activity come out of the shadows, but it's only one 80 second scene, why? or maybe you were sticking around waiting for more conflict resolution with the older sister and the leads all together, wrong, there is none. instead we get a BS, 'oh, everything is resolved with our respective careers, we both love each other, neither holds blame or guilt for the accident as children, we acknowledged dead dads blessing from heaven, we have both healed, evil mom is taken care off, but oh wait, we can never be together, why?, cuz my older alcoholic sister is throwing a 30 year tantrum and neglecting her child. OH WAIT!!! JK! one year time skip, sister is magically healed of all trauma, attachment, mental instability, is a perfect mom, and a highly accomplished artist beaming with joy[all with ZERO explanation, screen time, plot, not-a]........soooooooooo, it's okay, now you two can wistfully meet again in a field of flowers and give each other blank stares.

I thought the actors, production, and editing teams did a pretty good job. the writing and directing is Trash. for once a k-drama doesnt have 16 episodes with endless drag on time, a blessing to be able to write and direct a nice, fun, emotional shorter story that is satisfying and rounds off in the end; they missed the opportunity. it's like this drama was originally written for 12-14 episodes and in the middle of filming episode 6 they got cut to 8 episodes, and said "F***, we'll wing it and force it closed".

Beautiful enough to distract me from the plot holes

Before I say anything about the writing, I need to give the production team a standing ovation because this drama is absolutely gorgeous. Every single frame looks like a painting. The warm autumn palette, the maple leaves gently falling from every direction, the elegant camera work, the composition... everything is simply breathtaking. It has that cozy yet melancholic atmosphere that makes you want to pause every few minutes just to admire the scenery. And don't even get me started on the sound arrangement. The OST blends beautifully with every emotional scene, while the background sound effects make the palace feel alive instead of hollow. Production-wise, Blossoms of Power is genuinely one of the prettiest costume dramas I've watched this year. They absolutely cooked with the visuals.
Now... let's talk about the plot.

Honestly, beneath all those gorgeous visuals, this is still a pretty typical heavy-idol romance with a writing quality that doesn't quite match its production value. The premise immediately hooked me. In the very first episode, Gu Qingzhi ends her own life, and her soul possesses Shen Xihe's body. From then on, she continues living as Shen Xihe, carrying Gu Qingzhi's memories and regrets while staying in the same timeline. That setup alone was enough to make me press "next episode." Unfortunately, the more I watched, the more the plot started making me raise my eyebrows. Xiao Huayong, the Crown Prince, literally gives away his most precious medicine—the one keeping his incurable illness under control—to a complete stranger simply because he was captivated by her beauty. I'm sorry... WHAT? Shen Shen Xihe arrives in the capital for what is basically a giant husband-hunting event among the princes, and suddenly everyone becomes obsessed with her despite barely interacting with her. I understand she's beautiful and intelligent, but the relationship building happens way too quickly. Xiao Huayong is probably one of the most down bad male leads I've ever seen. Half of this drama is literally this man chasing Shen Xihe, flirting with her, teasing her, helping her, supporting her, and practically begging for her attention. Meanwhile, Shen Xihe remains cold, distant, emotionally unreadable, and almost impossible to approach for over twenty episodes. I understand that's supposed to be her personality, but the drama never gives us enough of Gu Qingzhi's previous life to explain why she became this emotionally closed-off. We desperately needed more backstory instead of simply being told, "She's just like that." As a result, I found it difficult to connect with her during the first half of the drama. We spend almost twenty-five episodes waiting for them to finally become the sweet married couple everyone was anticipating. That's... a very long wait for a romance-heavy drama.

Ironically, Xiao Huayong became the emotional heart of the entire story for me. This man had one of the most miserable lives imaginable. Poisoned since childhood, forced to grow up far away from the capital under the guise of recuperating in a temple, knowing he would never live a long life, while secretly investigating who had poisoned him all those years ago. Yet despite his fragile appearance, he was far from weak. He excelled in martial arts, quietly built an extensive intelligence network throughout the capital and imperial court, and stayed several steps ahead of almost everyone. While the palace viewed him as a harmless, sickly prince with no interest in the throne, he had already woven an invisible web around the entire court. He wasn't just smart—he was terrifyingly prepared. But what made me love Xiao Huayong the most wasn't his intelligence or his martial arts. It was the way he loved Shen Xihe. This man was completely, hopelessly, ridiculously in love with her, yet he never tried to force her hand. As the Crown Prince, he could have easily issued an imperial edict and made her his Crown Princess, but he never did. He pursued her relentlessly, flirted shamelessly, and yes... his down badism deserves academic research. But he always understood one thing: Shen Xihe was never a prize to be won. She wasn't a political trophy, nor was she something to possess. She was her own person, with her own choices, and her life belonged entirely to herself. He competed with the other princes, but he never competed for ownership of her. He simply hoped that one day she would willingly choose him after all her own considerations, negotiations, and terms. And when she finally did, it felt genuinely earned.
What makes him even more lovable is that all his power was never used to control Shen Xihe—it was used to protect her. From the very beginning, he tried to understand her instead of changing her. He quietly cleared obstacles from her path, supported every decision she made, and when he realized his own life was running out, he spent his remaining days arranging everything for her future. He made sure the people around him would continue protecting her. He told those he trusted to be good to her after he was gone. He paved the road so Shen Xihe wouldn't have to walk through thorns alone. That's the kind of down bad husband I wholeheartedly support. Not the possessive kind. The kind that says, "Even if I can't stay beside you, I'll make sure your future is peaceful." Xiao Huayong wasn't just in love with Shen Xihe—he loved her enough to prepare a life beyond his own existence.

Which is exactly why his death hurt so much. The scene that completely shattered me wasn't even his death itself, but when he carefully prepared lesson plans for his unborn child all the way until the age of fifteen because he knew he probably wouldn't live long enough to raise them. That scene genuinely caught me off guard. It was heartbreaking in the quietest way possible. ...And then the ending happened. We still had four episodes left after Xiao Huayong died, so I kept thinking, "Surely there's something bigger coming." Instead, we watched the palace settle into its new order, Shen Xihe became the Empress Dowager, their unborn child ascended the throne as emperor... and then, during the final two minutes, Xiao Huayong suddenly came back to life. Excuse me??? No explanation. No buildup. No logic. Nothing. I haven't read the novel, so I genuinely sat there wondering if I had accidentally skipped an episode. Thankfully, there's an extra episode, but if you only watch the main drama, that resurrection feels completely random.

The biggest disappointment, however, was the poison mystery. The Crown Prince spent his entire life searching for the person who poisoned him, yet the truth is only revealed in the very last episode, and the aftermath feels incredibly underwhelming. After spending thirty-six episodes building up that mystery, I expected a much stronger payoff and proper retaliation. Instead... it was just over. I do have to give a shoutout to Prince Xin, though. My opinion of him did a complete 180. At first I found him incredibly annoying, but by the end I genuinely appreciated his role in the story and thought his character added one of the more interesting twists.

As for the acting, Meng Ziyi felt a little flat during the first half of the drama. Maybe that was simply Shen Xihe's reserved personality, but once the character finally started showing more emotion later on, her performance became much more engaging. And finally... can we please give He Yu's stylist a gold plaque? Because WHAT ON EARTH. I genuinely didn't expect him to look THAT ridiculously handsome in historical costume. Somebody please lock this man inside Hengdian and cast him in costume dramas for the next ten years. I am begging. As a whole, Blossoms of Power is a drama carried more by its atmosphere, visuals, chemistry, and Xiao Huayong than by its writing. Story-wise, there's nothing particularly fresh, and the script leaves behind quite a few frustrating plot holes. But the chemistry between He Yu and Meng Ziyi is absolutely delicious, the production quality is stunning, and Xiao Huayong easily became one of my favorite green-flag male leads in costume dramas.

A Realistic Drama about College Life

Found this drama randomly. And when I watched this, neither was I a fan or had known any of the actors, so this review is not biased. This is not a drama that will impress you so much, but still it's worth watching. The thing that I liked the most is that this drama is so relatable. All four main characters and their own stories are so relatable and well portrayed. I liked how they displayed these characters and their own personalities.

And I think this drama has many life lessons in it that we all should learn. It is not a drama that has big plot twists or anything like that, it's just a normal story. But sometimes watching a normal realistic story feels refreshing too, right? I watched this drama after watching many long period dramas in a row, so this drama made me feel calm and fresh. Yes, there were some sad scenes here, but all were realistic that you could relate to them. And I liked how they worked together to overcome difficulties and supported each other. So, if you are looking for a realistic, modern drama about college life and friendships, then give this a try.
