wished they show more ML revenge arch instead of lackluster romance

I watched this since there is excessive ads from tiktok and there is meme on Douyin about SML hugging FL while kissing ML and i tried to watch. It was hot mess. Wang Yilei and Zeng Xitang are nailing their character but Wu Chunyi is like black hole in this drama, no chemistry and flat intonation. I only imagine other FL's instead of her to make the drama better.

The ending was too abrupt and i feel ML revenge arch was not being shown too much forsake for romance plot which is kind of letdown of this drama.

Watching the drama and then reading the book to compare

Lately, I've been wanting to read books by 千山茶客 because her novels' adapted dramas have been well received.

Note: I watched the entire drama at 1.5 speed and found it just right. I did start at normal speed, got bored, stopped for half a year, then came back, starting from the beginning. If parts seem draggy, maybe watch at 1.5 speed.

This drama does not disappoint. I think the plot was quite good, no glaring loop holes. I've been watching Cheng Lei dramas back when he was only doing short dramas and this is the first of his full length dramas that I've watched. He did not disappoint.

I like Zhou Ye in Love Me, Love My Voice and it was pretty cool to see her playing such a different role.

Regarding voice dubbing...I'm not sure why they chose to dub all the mains and the important support roles. Usually, at least some of the mains/seconds will dub their own voice. Perhaps the actors were busy? In any case, Zhou Ye does have a naturally higher voice so I can see why they would go with someone with a deeper female voice. Cheng Lei's voice, if I remember from A Familiar Stranger, would have been fine. Maybe scheduling just didn't work out.

I've also been following Zhang Kang Le since he debuted and I thought he did a great job playing such a complicated character in this drama!

Looking forward to reading the book and seeing how it differs from the drama! If you want a good revenge story though, pretty much all of 千山茶客's books are rebirth/revenge. The censorship probably got rid of the dying/rebirth bits (The Double doesn't have rebirth in the drama as well, but it's there at the beginning of the book!), but the revenge is still there.

Edit: I finished reading the book. IT IS HILARIOUS!!! This is my favorite book of this author so far. It’s less revenge heavy and more personal growth/healing from past. The drama is probably 60-70% similar to the book with several minor characters turning into “two combined into one.” The ending is also significantly different. Still, I thought it was closer to the book than “The Double.”

Fun and cute, but a bit draggy and preachy

An interesting mini-drama that shifts its tone drastically, but remains a very solid watch.

I went into this expecting something fairly serious. Mini-dramas about pseudo-matriarchal societies can often be cringy, preachy, or heavily rely on spice, but this one turned out to be purely comedic at first. I was already grinning and giggling by the first episode. The acting and situations were so deliberately exaggerated and theatrical that it was impossible to take anything on screen seriously. And when Hu Cai Hong showed up as the Empress, I was completely convinced that this drama is basically a spoof of the genre. After all, she played the exact same role in "The Romance of Tiger and Rose", a massive hit with a similar matriarchal setting.
Even the sound effects are straight out of a comedy. This is probably the only drama where those goofy sound cues didn't annoy me and actually felt perfectly in place.

The setup hits all the classic genre tropes. As usual, we have a princess who loves collecting handsome men, and a pretty boy she kidnaps for her harem. In this case, it's the Eldest Princess Su Feng Er and a wandering scholar, Xie Yuan. His bewildered reactions to the matriarchal customs upon arriving in the city were quite amusing, right up until he was chased down by a mob of aggressive local girls. The princess swooped in, chased them off, and claimed the hottie for herself.
From there, the plot delivers a mix of humor, palace politics, betrayal, the redemption arc of a spoiled princess, a bit of pointless angst, plenty of progressive messaging, and, of course, romance. Don't expect any spice, though (we do get a shirtless ML, but it's played purely for laughs). Overall, it strictly follows the formula.

Around the halfway mark, the tone shifts drastically. This is typical for C-dramas, but it still catches me off guard every time. The comedy fades out, making way for heavy romance, redemption and political scheming. For me, the drama lost a bit of its charm at this point. The narrative no longer felt like a clever satire and turned into a standard sequence of events and clichés.
This was especially noticeable when the plot shifted to serious discussions about gender equality. Not that these discussions are inherently bad—the subplot about opening a school for boys in a world where only girls are allowed to study is quite touching and noble. It's just that the beginning was so goofy that I had a hard time adjusting to the sudden seriousness.

The cast is surprisingly solid for a short-form drama. You know how sometimes they cast guys for the roles of courtesans or concubines (who only appear in a few scenes) that pale in comparison to the ML's visuals? Not here! The supporting cast is pure eye candy. You genuinely believe these guys would be the absolute visual treats in a matriarchal society.

Zhang He is perfectly cast, flawlessly pulling off both the "fragile" concubine act and the noble, strong-willed scholar persona. The guy definitely has excellent comedic timing—the first half of the drama is as hilarious as it is largely thanks to his performance. Yet, he still holds his own and fits right in during the angstier second half.
Guan Xin, unfortunately, faded into the background next to her co-star. I’m not exactly sure what was missing—maybe just sheer charisma, because technically, her acting was fine. But honestly, even the princess's maid felt more expressive, endearing, and left a stronger impression.
Wu Ya Lu as the Second Princess was fantastic. She completely nailed the "two-faced, sweet-but-venomous schemer" trope. She’s the kind of character you love to hate. Though I will say, her final "psycho villain monologue" could have packed a bit more emotional punch.
Yang Tao completely won me over from his very first scene to his last as the ML’s slightly goofy servant. Ruo Lin is a top-tier comedic relief character! Playing a dim-witted but fiercely loyal servant in a way that makes him endearing rather than annoying is no easy feat.
Hu Cai Hong is as fabulous as ever as the matriarchal Empress. These regal, commanding roles suit her perfectly.

I also have to praise the costumes. There isn’t a massive wardrobe, but the outfits are gorgeous, contextually appropriate, and do a great job of reflecting the characters' personalities.

The soundtrack hits the right notes as well—lighthearted and comedic in the first half, and unobtrusively atmospheric in the second.

Overall, "Her Phoenix Majesty" is an attempt to tackle serious social issues in a lighthearted wrapper. It easily could have been a cringefest, but it turned out to be a fun and cute watch, even if it gets a bit draggy and heavy-handed with its messaging at times.
I will definitely be rewatching the comedic first half whenever I need a good mood booster.

skipmode

I watched the whole drama mostly in skip mode, and honestly, it often felt like a loop of intense breathing scenes and forced kissing contests. The romantic tension was pushed so heavily that it started to feel repetitive rather than emotionally meaningful. Instead of building natural chemistry, many scenes seemed exaggerated and unnecessarily prolonged.

That said, the core concept of the Affinity Virus—especially the Yin & Ren dynamic—is genuinely interesting. The idea behind the biological and emotional bond has a lot of potential, and it adds a unique twist to the usual romance setup. The conflict created by this situation could have been explored in a much deeper and more psychological way.

Unfortunately, the production didn’t fully deliver on that potential. The storytelling sometimes lacked depth, and the pacing felt uneven. With stronger writing, tighter editing, and more focus on character development rather than physical tension, this drama could have been much more impactful.

Overall, Affinity had an intriguing premise, but the execution didn’t quite match the ambition of its concept.

sweet and entertaining

at the beginning I just thought it was hilarious. it was that with the first couple. rain is portrayed as an adorable and stupid clown while his bf is this serious and successful guy that everyone has a crush on. personally I think they were perfect for each other. rain with his little kinks and his bf indulging him. the spanking i had issues with. also the way he acted sometimes, more like rains older relative instea dof his bf. but i think its part lf their dynamic and relationship.
sky my baby! i cried for him. the actor did a great job bringing the pain and suffering across. p’pai! what a beautiful actor and on top
of it he has skills. the reformed player who turned into a major green flag. omg how I cried as tears rolled down his eyes. I seriously can’t get over his eyes. every emotion and thought was mirrored in his eyes. the way he took sky and guided him away from the inner darkness he carried was beautiful! he gave him time, soace and understanding! that is exactly what sky needed. P’Pai was his anchor who gave him something to hold on to and to keep him sane. i really loved how the character developed into a caring and loving person. i wish everyone could meet theirnown P’Pai. there was no red flag in this couple.
all together I loved the show. i will
miss them and hopefully they will have another show together. it is always hard to say goodbye to someone you love and I really loved the 4 of them.

Uninteresting police work that got dumber in the final arc

This mystery BL drama is centred around a duo of investigators : Thup (played by Pooh), a citizen who shares deep knowledge on paranormal local folklore and detective Singha, a non believer in the occult powers.

The duo is working well and the actors have stepped up a bit their acting games since their last series. However, if their overall acting felt better, their chemistry in this drama felt less good to me. I honestly felt the romance was not organic enough, often awkwardly set up in the midst of dark crimes...Instead of bringing light and happy parenthesis, it made them often looks like not focus enough on the criminal case.

I had real trouble to feel invested in the story as it features a lot of quite mid and uninteresting police work which got dumber as the story progressed, cumulating into pure idiocy by the end. The investigation felt very draggy : it was impossible for me to get invested into the resolution of the mystery. Even worse, I never could get onboard with the secondary romance. Their minimal backstory made it impossible to root for them. I also think actors playing those roles have a much more limited / interesting range of acting.

The production value was super good with very well made horror and visual effects, making it even more annoying to witness the illogical reactions of the characters that makes no sense. In addition to the ghosts being quite frightening, the dark magic was gritty and believable, and there were a couple of very effective jump scares. The OST was alright overall as well (while maybe a tad overused with its violin theme)...It is therefore very frustrating to see how the writing brought the level of the series down.

I would not recommend this to people. Despite the core idea of the story and the reasoning behind the crime being gruesome and interesting, the writing was quite weak with some very frustrating and poor police work, showcasing characters repetitively making very dumb choices ad nauseam. The romances were also a mixed bag with average chemistry and a useless secondary couple. Pacing was also a weak point : the series would likely have benefited from a tighter 8-10 episodes format.

Fl's character was being nerfed in here

I watched this drama after watching another adaptation with Zhang Jinyi and Yi Hang but this drama was quite waste for Zhi Chun He skills. Her styling was quite good but the plot was flat and weak.

No need to nerf FL character into love stuck person. FL is portrayed as weak, the plot is flat. I just sigh when knows the FL's magic was about to fail, I knew I was doomed. Sure enough, she needed a kiss from ML to restore her magic power.

The story feels like a mere formality, lacking depth. The ending, with the FL being kidnapped and the ML taking the fall, feels forced.

The biggest lack was Gang Wang Xing acting (he suits modern drama more than ancient) and the romance felt so abrupt that I couldn't connect with the plot at all. There is no chemistry between the leads.

Only to hardcore fans.

Cute bl romance that makes you definitely laugh

Do you need to escape from the real world and get a little distraction from it? Then you find the right small series that will help you with it.
The actors did a great job in this drama. Main actors but even the side characters will grow on you. The story is not difficult and maybe it is a little bit predictible but who cares? It's perfect for calming down and getting romance . It's easy story that we sometimes need.
I like the whole plot when Thee tried to charmed Peach. His playing on words was always funny and it made me laugh like never before. On the other hand Peach was so pure and bright so his behavior completed the plot in right way too.
The end was so sweet and warm. So do you need amount of sweet love, fun and friendship? Go for it ! ♥

They don't make dramas like this anymore?

From the very first episode, it sets a gripping tone—blending fantasy, legal thriller, romance, and suspense in a way that feels seamless rather than overwhelming. The premise of characters who can see fragments of the future in their dreams could have easily turned messy or repetitive. Instead, the writer carefully constructs a storyline that is eloquent, layered, and incredibly satisfying.

What truly makes this drama exceptional is its writing. Every single character is well-written—no one feels like a filler or a mere plot device. From the determined journalist Nam Hong-joo to the principled prosecutor Jung Jae-chan and the quietly heroic police officer Han Woo-tak, each character is given emotional depth and meaningful growth. Even supporting characters are treated with care, with backgrounds that are articulate and thoughtfully revealed. You understand why they make the choices they do, which makes the stakes feel real.

The writer clearly invested enough time to make the plot engaging while answering all the questions it raises. There are no frustrating loose ends, no abandoned arcs. Every twist feels earned. The pacing balances tension and warmth beautifully—legal cases unfold with suspense while the relationships develop naturally and sincerely.
It’s rare to watch a series and genuinely feel that there is nothing you would change—but this is one of those rare cases indeed.

It’s not just a good drama—it’s the kind that reminds you why you fell in love with K-dramas in the first place.

你的那些不靠谱,恰恰正是我需要的

"This ever-refreshing morning
made me believe that only when we lose the courage to start over,
does youth truly come to an end."

Hi I absolutely loved this drama

- Loved the development of the character, even the family of the leads. It was refreshing to see the relationships between the characters and their parents. The parents are LOVELY every one of them have their own distinct character. Their friendships with one another were wholesome. (yes i loved the mothers friend group)
- It's relatable and it hits home (just like the title 😝)
- Life lessons, coping with grief and loss, liked to see the growth of the characters

If you enjoy a warm and easy to watch drama (that is somewhat school-related) to unwind after a long day, I'd recommend you to try it out. And if you dont really enjoy watching school dramas, don't worry, its not like cringey type, it still has other parts of their life so it doesnt focus totally on school. It also shows their life growing up, transitioning, hobbies, relationships with family etc.
Didnt regret watching this at all. Chanced upon this after watching WIFTY and this plot kinda reminds me of it.
But also has some differences from WIFTY for eg, more focus on the parents too

JingXichi:
started off as seemingly slightly irresponsible --> more mature, and rational

ChenHuanEr:
started off as bubbly and slightly lacking in confidence --> more mature, and confident

𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬:
QiQi: one of ChenHuanEr's first friends in new school. i liked that her relationship with her mother did improve slightly. I didnt fully like her character, though i can kind of see why she is the person she was (partly because her mother is kind of cold, aloof too) i feel like she mostly thinks for herself. but glad to see her move on from her past.
SongCong: He deserved more, i am so glad that QiQi and him didnt get together in the end(even though on surface they might look matching) but this guy hes so precious pls ... he made earrings for her??? and it's handmade??? hes a keeper!!!pls you deserve more.
DuMan: Honestly I am not sure how I feel about SongCong and DuMan's weird romance going on... but i am still happy to see her, her character also has growth and there are struggles that she faces.
XinYan: bubbly, outgoing, extroverted. it was nice to see you class monitor :))) happy for her she has healed from her past crush on JingXiChi
LiTian: an intelligent and clever character who is quite comical in his own unique way, it did spice up the show. He ended up having a partner despite him saying “wise men dont fall in love (智者不如爱河)” LOL

can still see hints of the characters being the same person when they were slightly younger, which is GOOD, shows coherence with storyline.

𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐝:
- homely environment, that the parents take turns to care for their friends' children (like cooking them meals) because they do night shifts, features a comfortable vibe
-the main leads truly care for one another i liked that they started off as friends, showing their very real sides, then becoming besties to lovers
-how JingXichi stands up for ChenHuanEr right in the very beginning caught my eye (it showed a soft side to his exterior, that he was actually a kind person and considered her as his friend, even before they knew each other very well)
-how ChenHuanEr encouraged JingXichi during his setbacks
-how the friend group in class goes out on outings together

- back part: how the main leads talk out and resolve their differences during quarrel, was quite realistic showing the struggles of long distance rls

- i liked the filming, directing, the angles and how the story was being told
- script was good, not super lame, i think it was quite natural

𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐝:
i think certain characters' acting could be improved. i have no problem with the main leads but 2nd female lead may have limited range of expressions, though i think she did a pretty decent job already.

would have loved to see a little more of their home neighbourhood (家属院)scenes again and the family's scenes also in the back part (tho they did show them reuniting in the neighbourhood)
when they transitioned into university life i felt that i missed the life they had back then... though it was also important to show them transitioning into adulthood

the last episode felt a little bit rushed... thought it was a decent attempt at tying up the knots and all, and closure of the characters, but would have loved to see the parents for one last time too

𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬:
when the last episode ended, i was sad to see them go.. that feeling of watching a good drama the last episode is bittersweet. will miss them hence rewatch value is 9.5

if you read until this far, thank you for reading !! its my first review <3

Still weak for mystery drama

I watched this drama since i quite like Huang Yunyun and mystery is one of my favorite genre for all the country but it stills lack for the case but i quite like the character in this drama

Du Peiyuan and Huang Yunyun acting is excellent, and the supporting character, the fat captain, is also very likable. But for the mystery drama, this drama still lacks especially from directing since many scene got shaky effect from the camera.

This is Republican-era suspenseful mystery revolving around the disappearance and murder of the SML the owner of the Grand World amusement park

ML has excellent logical thinking skills and can point out bugs promptly, but his investigative abilities are average. He relies entirely on self-disclosure to solve cases.

FL appears gentle and innocent, but is actually a pure villain who orchestrates everything and manipulates everyone. The FL travels to the world of crime seeking money, targeting the SML She uses various methods, including seduction, drugging, and taking indecent photos, to extort money from him. She then uses her diary to manipulate a 3ML into eliminating the second SML.

However, the ending leaves too many unresolved questions, which is a major drawback. Since we never know where is the actual body of SML.

Still too weak for mystery drama. Only recommended for hardcore fans of the actors.

Just not for me

Things I liked

1 The five girls friendship. I love stories where there are several protagonists, especially when thy are studying or just start working.

2 Esther Yu. Not my favorite of her roles and I prefer her a goofball or a silly romantic character but she still was good, although I admit I barely recognized her at first.

3 The other three girls except the one with the bangs.

Things I disliked

1 The ghost thing. So unnecessary and boring.

2 The character of the girls with the bangs. Not only I found the bangs awful and the actress bad but the character itself didn't appeal to me.

3 The romance part was an aftermath and I get it, but it still bothered me. The problem with this series was that I didn't love anything. I either liked some things or disliked them and that's bad in my book.

Delightful Romantic Comedy.

Both the leads shine in this easy romantic romcom. It was a pleasure to watch. I really enjoy Yoo in Na, she is always classy and seems to pick her dramas to act it as quality. And of coure Lee Dong Wook is always great to watch. They have great chemistry which was apparant in Guardian so it isn't a surprise that they would do well as Main leads in a Drama.
