I can make a better horror story around a wet wipe

I've sat through some proper garbage horror, but at least those movies tried to explain where the damn spirits came from. This one just gave a sketchy ah grandma for that.
It's like the director looked at the script and said 'backstory? Flashbacks? Plot? Nah, too much work.' Half the movie is just random spooky shit happening with zero explanation and the rest is people dying.
The lead looks terrified of water but there is no explanation whatsoever. None of the characters had any character. From the first scene I knew all of them were dying in the most mid ways possible.
Easily one of the most personality-less horror movies I've ever seen. I have nothing to look forward to, but I really hope they explain stuff in the to be continued part.

Great Romcom But Disappointing Ending

This was a swoon worthy, kicking your feet, hiding your face while peeking through your fingers K-drama with a healthy dose of fun and hilarious moments. For the most part, the story was well written, the characters complex with interesting dynamics in their relationships. The actors did a phenomenal job and the chemistry was off the chain.

I have 2 major gripes, however, and could not in good conscience score it a perfect 10.

1. They took us on quite a ride for 11 episodes to attain the Crown, only to abolish it in the final episode. Not only was this rushed, it was not a pleasant surprise to know we were rooting for his success when all he wanted was to end it. It left me feeling unfulfilled because not only was attaining the crown quite simple all along, his reasons for not ascending the throne didn't line up with what he was saying all along. I think the writers missed a huge opportunity to make him a better monarch by allowing him to effect proper change by abolishing outdated rules that caused previous Kings to live unhappy lives.

2. Making Prime Minister Min the villain to the degree they did was horrendous. He almost became unrecognisable. We know unrequited love can drive a man mad but his plan made no sense were it to become successful. All it did was push the woman he loved away from him, cost him a second friendship and a legacy he worked hard to accomplish following in his father's footsteps. He went downhill so hard and so fast that I got whiplash.

The story follows Chi Yue (CY), a fierce and talented modern-day martial arts actress whose life is turned upside down when she suddenly transmigrates into a script. She awakens in the body of a young widow in the Li family of ancient Xikong Town. Just as importantly, she works to rebuild her relationship with her stepchildren. Instead of ruling through fear, she shows patience, care, and genuine affection. She pays attention to each child: teaching the eldest son survival and hunting skills, encouraging the second daughter to study and value education, and gently nurturing the youngest, who gradually becomes attached to her. Slowly, their walls come down, and trust begins to grow.

Meanwhile, Ji Hong (JH) arrives in Xikong to prepare for the imperial examination. As the nephew of the village chief, he plans to stay at his uncle’s home. But Li Cui, CY’s late husband’s sister, mistakes him for a common thug and tries to use him in a scheme against CY. Instead, JH becomes intrigued by CY after witnessing how fearless and unconventional she is compared to other women in the village.

JH & CY soon became friends. Though seen as a studious scholar, JH is actually more passionate about inventions and craftsmanship than passing exams. However, due to family expectations and filial duty, he continues preparing for the imperial examination. CY is one of the first people who truly sees him—not just the role he’s forced to play—and supports his real dreams without judgment.

Over time, JH becomes CY’s closest ally. He helps her investigate the truth behind her husband’s death, supports her business, protects her during dangerous moments, and gradually builds a bond with the children.

But one question remains…. How will CY return to her original world?

Un inno all’amore puro e limpido incastonato tra le pieghe della Storia

“Sotto l’albero di Biancospino” - film cinese del 2010 diretto da Zhang Yimou - è un’opera di straordinaria intimità e purezza espressiva, un racconto stilisticamente sobrio e di grande forza comunicativa. La pellicola rinuncia volutamente ad ogni artificio o spettacolarizzazione visiva, scegliendo di affidarsi al potere della sottrazione, del silenzio e di un contesto rurale autentico e toccante. Il risultato è semplicemente disarmante, interamente focalizzato sull'esplorazione del sentimento amoroso nella sua declinazione più limpida, capace di toccare le corde più profonde dello spettatore attraverso la forza dei dettagli e delle emozioni messe a nudo.

LA STORIA - Ambientato nella Cina degli anni '70, durante gli ultimi sprazzi della Rivoluzione Culturale, il film segue le vicende della giovane studentessa Jing Qiu, interpretata da una straordinaria Zhou Dong Yu, che di recente ho avuto modo di scoprire e ammirare anche in un’altra pellicola a dir poco sublime (Better days). Inviata in un remoto villaggio di montagna per un programma di rieducazione attraverso il lavoro nei campi, Jing Qiu porta sulle spalle il peso di un'infamia politica: la sua famiglia è rigidamente monitorata e la madre è ridotta a lavori degradanti dopo che il marito è stato imprigionato con l’accusa di essere un capitalista. In questo clima di costante sospetto e oppressione sociale, l'esistenza di Jing Qiu si incrocia con quella di Lao San – interpretato da un Shawn Dou - un giovane speleologo dall'animo nobile, il cui padre occupa una posizione militare di rilievo, ma la cui madre si è tolta la vita dopo essere stata bollata come dissidente. Tra i due nasce un legame clandestino, fatto di fugaci incontri rubati e promesse silenziose. Il fulcro emotivo del film risiede proprio nella rappresentazione dell’amore puro: la relazione tra i due protagonisti si sviluppa in totale controtendenza rispetto ai canoni del melodramma contemporaneo, facendo leva esclusivamente su piccoli gesti quotidiani, sguardi pudici e una cavalleria protettiva d'altri tempi.
Il tragico epilogo, in cui l'ombra della leucemia – probabilmente legata ad un avvelenamento da metalli pesanti - si abbatte implacabile sul destino dei due innamorati, conduce lo spettatore verso una delle conclusioni più strazianti del cinema sentimentale moderno. La drammatica trasformazione di Lao San, che passa dall'essere un giovane vibrante all'ombra sbiadita di se stesso su un letto d'ospedale, è un vero e proprio colpo al cuore. La sequenza finale, con Jing Qiu che invoca disperatamente il suo nome di fronte a quell’unica fotografia di loro due incollata sul soffitto affinché lui possa vederla fino all'ultimo istante, spezza ogni tensione nello spettatore, dando sfogo a un’intensa emozione liberatoria.

RECITAZIONE - Per quanto riguarda il cast, i protagonisti offrono una prova davvero di alto livello: Shawn Dou, con il suo sorriso incredibilmente radioso e gli occhi carichi di una giovinezza pulita, dà vita a un personaggio indimenticabile: un ragazzo che incarna la devozione assoluta, capace di frenare i propri impulsi nel profondo rispetto dei tempi e della vulnerabilità della sua amata. Dall'altra parte, Zhou Dong Yu offre una performance magistrale per sfumature e controllo, restituendo con delicatezza millimetrica il passaggio dall'esitazione timorosa alla determinazione di un sentimento totalizzante. E’ un’attrice di un’espressività straordinaria che – non so come – non avevo ancora avuto modo di conoscere e che davvero mi stupisce sia per talento – tra l’altro ai tempi di questo film era appena diciottenne - sia per i ruoli interpretati: curiosa di scoprire il resto della sua filmografia, al momento per quanto mi riguarda conta due lavori davvero di spessore, ben più impegnativi delle molte commedie intrise di banalità.

ASPETTI TECNICI - Il film si distingue per una messinscena volutamente sommessa. La fotografia di Zhao Xiao Ding abbandona i colori saturi per abbracciare una palette cromatica più spenta, dominata da toni terreni e luci naturali che conferiscono al mondo rurale un aspetto vissuto, autentico e pervaso da una dolce malinconia. Peculiare è l’uso frequente di cartelli testuali inseriti tra le scene per esplicitare i passaggi temporali; una scelta didascalica che dona alla pellicola una cadenza quasi letteraria, come se lo spettatore stesse sfogliando le pagine ingiallite di un vecchio diario privato.


In conclusione, una pellicola sublime che portà in sé un animo poetico calato in un contesto di grande contrasto, il che lo traduce ancor più in un inno a un romanticismo pulito e perduto che dimostra come il vero amore non abbia bisogno di eccessi per risplendere eterno, protetto per sempre sotto i rami di un biancospino. Una visione davvero più che consigliata, per quanto anche dolorosa. Solitamente rifuggo i finali tragici, ma in certe – rare – occasioni lo strappo alla regola diventa qualcosa di doveroso. E questa è una di quelle.

Heavy but worth it

A splendid watch. This 34 episodic drama really has it all.

Starting with the story - time travel plus heavy on politics and power struggles. It begins within the family and grows all the way to national level. Conspiracies, hidden agendas and motives, murders for having your way. The story is well paced for most of the parts, except it does become sort of slow when it's highlighting political aspects and abusive authorities. Overall, I think the story unfolded very beautifully, adding unexpected twists. One can never know who turns good or bad, who is friend or foe. Characters had good developments; their stories having a lot of substance and depth. They all pull you in, whether you hate them or love them. That being said, the negative characters really get on your nerve 😬 I could find myself getting extremely worked up over a few! But I prefer that over feeling disconnected. It showed that I was truly invested in the story. Even if I am not a big fan of these heavy power struggles, it's truly a good story. A scene that really stood out and blew my mind was discovering the letter at the Duke's house. Honestly, it was because of that scene, I realised the letter had so much significance. Because other than that, I'm not sure if that letter moved mountains. It did help, I agree. But that scene? Mind-blowing! The anticipation was well built and you'll find your heart racing! Beautiful!

The cast was definitely a great selection. Meng Ziyi (love her from 'The Untamed!') and Li Yunrui as the main leads make a wonderful onscreen pair, standing out for their portrayal of such strong characters. You would basically become a family member of theirs, hoping just good happens to them. Both actors do an amazing job. Their chemistry was good too. Other than the main leads, I'd say the most iconic of all the cast would be the antagonists. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM! Such talent to get on your nerves 😂 I seriously won't forget Wang Yingxue played by Zhang Meng, Wei Tingzhen played by Bai Qinglin, Song Han played by Yan An, and Su Yan played by Shangqi for a long time. They have pissed me off that much 🙄 Next would be the emperor potrayed by Tan Kai and Jiang Meisun potrayed by Zhang Chenghe. They really stood out and touched my heart. Their brotherhood and the constant clips of their bond in the past, I found myself moved to tears every now and then. The eunuch Wang too, I loved that guy too. Dou Zhao's father was honestly a very fickle person, but you could sympathize with him. It was well potrayed by Ji Chenmu. Really loved the Dou Zhao's grandma; she's a true anchor, a very consistent loving character. I really loved the letter scene. Even if a small role, Zeng Ziye potrayed Qi Xia so well 👍 Finally, Little Song Mo's actor Shi Hengyi was a really good and most importantly an adorable one.

Music wise, I don't think there's too much standing out, but osts and background music were good.

Drawbacks wise, it's maybe the same as the plus points. The heavy political background and constant power dynamics run the story as much as it pulls it down. If you are a fan of these topics, you would love this. Since I can't digest too much of it, it felt just a bit dragged sometimes, especially the scenes of Dou Ming at her in laws. Then I'd say, it's closer to an ick than boring. So many characters were inconsistent, you could never tell who was going to turn bad. And once they do, from then till the leads realise they are negative, uhh! The frustration of their pretence pisses you off. This drama is an emotional rollercoaster! Another thing I'd say, I wanted more fight scenes or martial arts. I felt it lacked that, the adrenaline of blades.

Rewatch wise, I wouldn't rewatch. Not because it's bad. But it's too long and as much as I was involved in the story, I am not attached to any character. I just wanted the dust to settle so I could get out. They deserve happiness and so do I 😂 so I don't want to see them struggle again. Betrayals and injustice were all too heavy on me! But this is what happens with all the heavy stories I feel. The story might be good and you would want to rewatch, but it's all the same torture and pain again. And this drama doesn't have THAT big of an impact on me, enough to push me into going through all of the pain again. But yes! I would surely recommend it for a good, long watch. It's worth watching! Hope you like it as much as I did & maybe even more!

My Little Bride is a film built around a question it never answers.

The premise is simple: a 15-year-old girl is forced to marry an older man because of a promise made by their grandparents years ago.

What surprised me is not the age difference itself, but how little the story actually needs it.

If the heroine were a university student, the plot would remain almost unchanged. She could still be in love with the baseball player. He could still have romantic interests of his own. They could still be trapped in a marriage neither of them wants.

The film spends a great deal of time watching them live together, share a house, and navigate married life. Yet it never provides a convincing reason why the heroine specifically has to be a high school student.

The same problem applies to the marriage itself. There is no inheritance, no family business, no meaningful consequence attached to refusing it. The entire plot rests on the stubbornness of a grandfather, which feels surprisingly weak for a story built entirely around that decision.

This is why I found myself questioning the premise more than enjoying the comedy. The film relies heavily on a situation that attracts attention, but never fully justifies it within the narrative.

The strangest thing about My Little Bride is that the more you analyze it, the less you need the bride to be "little."

A very memorable premise supported by a surprisingly fragile foundation.

THAT OG KDRAMA HUMOUR IS BACK!!!!

Legend of the Kitchen Soldier is a comedy K-drama that's definitely worth checking out.

The premise alone is captivating: a young man enlists in the military only to find himself working in the kitchen. But here's the twist – he starts seeing a game interface that gives him kitchen quests, recipes, and even abilities, turning him into the ultimate kitchen soldier. It's a fun idea, especially if you love game elements.

What really shines through is the food. As a food lover, watching the protagonist create and learn new recipes is a treat. But the real showstopper is the comedy. This show has that perfect sitcom-style humor – silly, genuinely well-written, and often surprising. It's the kind of comedy that makes you laugh out loud and wonder who even came up with it. The entire cast has fantastic comic timing, making every scene a delight.

Beyond the laughs, Legend of the Kitchen Soldier also manages to deliver moments of comfort and emotion, particularly through the male lead, Park Jihoon. His acting is incredible, especially his "eye acting," conveying so much emotion with just a glance. You really root for his character as he navigates loss, supports his family, discovers his passion for cooking, and finds friendship and a sense of belonging. Even the supporting characters are interesting and add to the overall enjoyment of the show. It's a great blend of comedy, heart, amazing acting, and delicious food shots.

L' evoluzione "mancata" di Miss Tambourine

Miss Tambourine - il soprannome già da solo contiene metà (disprezzo ) del drama - è il nomignolo dispregiativo di Yoon Ji-na, protagonista della serie: una donna di 35 anni, assistent manager di una catena di caffetterie, Coffebay. Viene appellata così dalle colleghe di ufficio perché nel loro idioma avvelenato lei sarebbe quella donna che “fa atmosfera”: la ragazza graziosa, gradevole, un po’ ornamentale, quella che i colleghi maschi guardano con favore e che, nella fantasia tossica altrui, ottiene attenzione non per autorità o competenza ma perché sa intrattenere. Il tamburello richiama proprio quell’idea da karaoke, da hostess che sorridono, accompagnano, tengono su il clima. Insomma: non un complimento, ma il modo elegante con cui certi ambienti riescono a dire “non la prendetela sul serio”, "non seguire il suo esempio" senza usare parole troppo esplicite. E questa, in fondo, è già la fotografia perfetta della serie: bella superficie, sottotesto acidissimo.

Dal punto di vista estetico, Something in the Rain sa benissimo cosa sta facendo. La regia è classica, non sperimentale, ma ha un gusto visivo notevole: toni caldi, seppia morbido, una malinconia costante che sembra stendersi su ogni scena come una coperta calda, lisa per l'utilizzo. È un drama che non urla mai, ti siede accanto e ti mette addosso quell’aria da sera piovosa in cui tutto appare più romantico di quanto probabilmente sia. , Funziona finché non ti accorgi che spesso il silenzio viene usato più come sedazione che come intensità. I primi piani lunghissimi, i montaggi musicali, la musichetta che scorre sopra corse, abbracci e prese in braccio costruiscono un clima, sì, ma non sempre una vera tensione. E la differenza io la sento.

La prima metà della serie vive di questa illusione elegante. È il tratto più riuscito: ti convince di stare guardando una romance adulta, delicata, naturale, quasi osservata da una finestra appannata. Poi però arriva il problema fondamentale: la storia d’amore non viene davvero costruita, viene mostrata. Vedi loro due che sorridono, camminano, si cercano, si toccano, si abbracciano. Vedi la tenerezza. Vedi la familiarità. Ma la passione? La spinta? La ragione profonda per cui lui dovrebbe scegliere proprio lei, e lei proprio lui? Quella resta spesso fuori campo, come se bastasse mostrare due persone vicine per farci credere che l’amore sia diventato inevitabile. E invece no: non basta una canzone, non basta un ombrello stretto, un passaggio della metro, non basta un abbraccio preso bene in controluce. La romance, almeno per chi la guarda con un po’ di sangue nelle vene, deve far sentire il perché. A me il perché non è arrivato!

Joon-hee e Jin-a hanno una chimica che molti hanno celebrato come esplosiva; per me, più semplicemente, è una chimica discreta, fatta di comfort e desiderio trattenuto, ma non di vera tensione. I bacini ci sono, la tenerezza pure, ma quella corrente sotterranea che dovrebbe attraversare una storia d’amore adulta non sempre si accende. Joon-hee è scritto come l’uomo ideale visto attraverso gli occhi di lei: bello, comprensivo, paziente, quasi sempre pronto a reggere il mondo sulle spalle senza lamentarsi troppo. Solo che un uomo così, se non gli dai anche un interno umano, rischia di sembrare più una funzione che una persona. E in effetti la sua evoluzione è minima: tra traumi familiari, abbandoni, dolore e senso di spaesamento, si intuisce molto, ma si realizza poco. Non c’è una vera trasformazione che si faccia sentire fino in fondo.

Poi c’è Jin-a! Il vero centro nervoso della serie, e anche il suo punto più contestabile. Perché il problema non è che sia una vittima, o che sia sotto pressione, o che viva schiacciata tra famiglia, lavoro e giudizio sociale. Il problema è che il drama le assegna una lunga serie di scelte che la fanno apparire sempre meno come una donna che cresce e sempre più come una che oscilla, si ritira, rimanda, acconsente, si fa trascinare. La sua condotta con l’ex fidanzato è il primo grande schiaffo allo spettatore: la scena della macchina, con lui che si porta dietro un gesto da maniaco disperato e lei che finisce dentro un incubo di ansia e terrore, dovrebbe essere il momento in cui si capisce che certi legami sono tossici fino al midollo. E invece la serie, pur mostrando il pericolo, spesso non si prende abbastanza cura di farci sentire il terrore fino in fondo. Lo intuisce, lo sfiora, ma non lo porta sempre a compimento.

Il vero crollo, poi arriva nelle decisioni successive. Lei si piega a logiche familiari e sociali che la espongono sempre di più. Quando accetta l’appuntamento al buio per placare la madre, dopo che lui è stato persino picchiato dalla stessa, il danno è ormai evidente: non è più una donna alle prese con la paura, è una donna che continua a scegliere la via più comoda per non affrontare il conflitto, anche quando il costo lo paga l’uomo che dice di amare. E quando organizza di nascosto con il padre di lui e poi gli chiede di non essere infantile, lì il drama si tradisce da solo. Perché a quel punto non sei più davanti a una protagonista in difficoltà; sei davanti a una persona che continua a chiedere maturità agli altri mentre lei stessa scivola dentro compromessi che sembrano solo rimandi di colpa. E non ho avuto alcuna percezione della differenza di età, nel modo di vivere la relazione: lei e la madre mi sono sembrate oltremodo infantili.

La cosa più irritante, in tutto questo, è che Something in the Rain non approfondisce davvero il costo emotivo di ciò che racconta. Parla di molestie sul lavoro, di ambiente tossico, di sessismo quotidiano, di famiglia soffocante, e in teoria lo fa bene. Mostra, non spiega. Ma mostra senza scavare sempre abbastanza nella ferita. Jin-a subisce, minimizza, abbassa la testa, cerca di non preoccuparsi troppo di sé per non disturbare gli altri, e questo potrebbe essere un ritratto potentissimo di assuefazione e stanchezza. Invece, spesso, finisce per sembrare una donna che non reagisce nemmeno quando dovrebbe. Il che rende la sua figura meno tragica e più esasperante. E allora sì, capisci perché tanti spettatori smettono di vederla come la protagonista da proteggere e cominciano a guardarla come una presenza autosabotante.

La seconda metà del drama è il luogo in cui questa frustrazione diventa struttura. La madre entra come una calamità morale senza fine: controllo, giudizio, ricatto emotivo, status, reputazione, ossessione per ciò che “si deve” fare. Il padre resta terribile nella sua passività ambivalente, la sorella di lui vive un’ombra di serietà e ferite che però non si schiudono mai in una vera evoluzione. E i colleghi? Un catalogo di tossicità che la serie osserva con lucidità ma senza ribaltarlo davvero. C’è verità, ma non c’è riscatto, accennato alla fine. Hai vinto tu, JIn-a, in ascensore, 3 secondi di scena. Tutto resta addosso, come polvere.

Il punto non è che la serie sia brutta. È peggio: è una serie fatta bene che non convince fino in fondo proprio dove dovrebbe colpire di più. Tecnicamente regge, visivamente seduce, gli attori sono bravissimi, e la prima metà ha un fascino rilassante con qualche richiamo francese, sembrano quasi dei bistrot e non dei ristoranti asiatici. Ma quando si tratta di far crescere davvero la storia e i personaggi, si ritrae, ripete, si appoggia all’atmosfera e alla musica, e spera che basti. Non basta. La cosiddetta evoluzione di Jin-a, per come viene mostrata, è più un annuncio che un percorso. Lui non supera davvero i suoi traumi, lei non diventa mai pienamente la donna capace di scegliere senza dissociarsi, se non negli ultimi 20 minuti di lavoro, e il finale non cambia la sensazione di fondo: 90 secondi di punzecchiamenti e scherzi, un abbraccio goffo, dopo 3 anni di separazione, persone che avrebbero meritato una scrittura più coraggiosa.

Alla fine resta questo: una serie elegante, malinconica, ben recitata, molto più forte nella forma che nella sostanza. Una romance che sa vestirsi benissimo, ma che quando deve spiegarti perché dovresti amare davvero questi due, comincia a balbettare. E per una storia d’amore, è un difetto che pesa come un ombrello fradicio. Il voto, finisce lì: nel territorio del “buon lavoro, ma non mi ha conquistata”. Intorno al 7 pieno, con tutto l’onore e tutto il fastidio del caso.

PS: ero partita da 8,5 dopo il primo episodio, con premesse bellissime, e sono arrivata a 7 perché è un lavoro molto curato: la OST — e sottolineo che non c’è una canzone coreana — ti porta perfettamente dentro l’atmosfera emotiva, e si sposa benissimo con tutto, anche se le musiche sono oltremodo minimaliste e insistenti nel finale, partono in continuazione e alla lunga provocano stanchezza.

Il ritmo è terribile. Primi piani di cinque minuti di loro che si struggono, in una serie di venti ore complessive, sono la morte: è una serie lenta, lentissima, e quel tempo avrebbe potuto essere speso meglio per i dialoghi, per approfondire, per inserire scene che secondo me sono state tagliate, perché a volte i personaggi sanno di eventi e ti chiedi come diavolo abbiano fatto ad apprenderli, e finisci per doverti dare una spiegazione da sola.

Il payoff emotivo è tragico, e il finale è forse il più brutto e sbrigativo che io abbia visto in un lavoro del genere.

Il cast, a livello interpretativo, non mi ha convinta del tutto: gli attori che interpretano i padri abbassano la media complessiva del gruppo.

Voglio dire un’ultima cosa: forse lo scopo, mi sono detta, è parlare dell’evoluzione a tentoni di questa donna, perché la storia d’amore è il contorno, illustrata per lo più con dei videoclip musicali; i suoi problemi, invece, sono affrontati, mostrati, ma mai approfonditi. Non so come altro spiegarmelo. E la storia, come al solito, è infilata lì come motore che avvia la crescita personale e come polo attrattivo per acchiappare una grossa fetta di pubblico che ancora nelle recensioni parla della storia d’amore, ma la serie è molto altro.

E il lato positivo, questo lo sottolineo, è che mostra il lato scomodo della Corea, e dei coreani, altro che uomini da sogno: la società è posizionale, classista, il gender gap esiste ed è prodotto del patriarcato. Così insito che anche le donne sono deformate nel pensiero: “Dovresti sposarti”, “Sei più bella”, “Hai un fidanzato?”, “Ormai non ti applichi più, pensi al fidanzato”, “Lasci il lavoro?”, “Ti sposi?”. O la madre: la madre è quanto di più tossico possa rappresentare la società. “Se ti hanno umiliata è colpa tua”, “Se non andavi in pensione e avanzavi di carriera non si sarebbero permessi di umiliarla”, “Se ti tradiscono le coppie litigano, fa niente, può capitare”, “Ha molti fratelli, quando il padre morirà dovrà occuparsi di lui e anche nostra figlia dovrà occuparsene”, “Se sei orfano e tuo padre ti abbandona sei marcio”. E l’ipocrisia, quanta ipocrisia, cazzo.
C'è poi un altro aspetto che ho apprezzato e che raramente viene mostrato con questa schiettezza: la gestione delle molestie sul lavoro. È vero, anche qui il drama si ferma spesso sulla soglia dell'approfondimento e non entra fino in fondo nel costo psicologico che certe situazioni comportano. Tuttavia mostra molto bene una dinamica scomoda che spesso nelle narrazioni viene semplificata: le donne non diventano automaticamente solidali tra loro solo perché condividono la stessa discriminazione. Anzi! Molte colleghe prendono le distanze da chi denuncia, non perché credano che abbia torto, ma perché hanno paura di essere coinvolte, isolate o penalizzate a loro volta. Alcune scelgono il silenzio come forma di sopravvivenza. Altre arrivano persino a schierarsi con i molestatori o con il sistema che li protegge, nella speranza di ottenere vantaggi, protezione o semplicemente di non diventare il prossimo bersaglio.
È una rappresentazione dura, perfino deprimente, ma estremamente realistica. E non riguarda soltanto la Corea. Credo che la stessa dinamica possa verificarsi in moltissimi contesti occidentali. Il drama ha il merito di non trasformare le donne in un gomitolo di vittime virtuose: mostra invece persone inserite in un sistema competitivo e gerarchico che, per paura o convenienza, finiscono talvolta per perpetuare le stesse logiche che le danneggiano.

È forse uno degli aspetti più riusciti dell'intera serie, perché mette in scena una verità sgradevole: le donne non sono sempre complici tra loro. Molto spesso, soprattutto in ambienti tossici, diventano rivali prima ancora di riuscire a diventare alleate. E Something in the Rain questo lo mostra con una lucidità che fa male.

Un altro elemento che mi ha colpito è il rapporto quasi patologico con il lavoro e con il ruolo sociale: il lavoro non è soltanto un mezzo di sostentamento, è identità, status, legittimazione dell'esistenza. È il modo in cui una persona misura il proprio valore e quello degli altri.
Lo si vede benissimo nel padre di Jin-ah. Una volta andato in pensione, non riesce davvero a godersi il tempo libero. Si sveglia comunque all'alba perché quel ritmo è diventato il suo orologio biologico. Non sa cosa fare delle sue giornate. Si mette al computer, controlla la posta elettronica, studia inglese, cerca qualcosa che riempia quel vuoto lasciato dal lavoro. Non è la rappresentazione di un uomo finalmente libero, ma di una persona che ha costruito tutta la propria identità attorno a una funzione sociale e che, una volta persa quella funzione, fatica a capire chi sia e si obnubila nell'alcol già nel pomeriggio, tra noia e disturbo d'adattamento.

Una società, quella coreana, che appare moderna, efficiente e affascinante dall'esterno, ma che spesso sembra chiedere ai suoi membri un prezzo emotivo enorme. Ed è forse anche per questo che il drama mi è sembrato, a tratti, molto più interessante come ritratto sociale che come storia d'amore. Dietro il k-pop, le luci di Seoul e l'immaginario romantico esportato dall'esotismo dei drama, emerge un Paese duro, competitivo, classista e profondamente segnato dalle aspettative collettive. Non un paradiso sentimentale, ma un luogo in cui molte persone sembrano vivere costantemente sotto il peso di ciò che dovrebbero essere.
La serie di buono ha questo: non edulcora nulla, non fa sconti. La donna non è ritratta da un misogino, ma è prodotto del sistema, incapace di dissenso, frustrata e disposta a tollerare pur di seguire il percorso che la società indica come corretto, per non essere outsider, zitella. Peccato non averne mostrato il costo emotivo — i primi piani di lei che piange sul letto non contano.

Pretty Boring Storyline

I guess I am duped by MDL rating once again. As much as I liked Bai Lu as an actress, i am just not getting the vibe of the story here. I don’t feel the connection between FL and ML, the plot is pretty straightforward and the characters are just too plain. I wouldve overlooked the lack of chemistry between the ML and FL had the plot been interesting enough to keep me watching, but yeah, 3 cases through and they failed to convince me to stay on and waste my time.

The mainleads’ childhood encounter is also too tropey that I roll my eyes everytime they do the flashbacks. I fast-forwarded many scenes of those flashbacks too cuz they keep showing the same one and it gets annoying as the show goes on. I also thought this Li Peiyi character just tried too hard to look tough and brilliant when she keeps getting set up for every cases she investigates, the vibe just failed to come through. As for Xiao Huaijin, oh well the character development is too slow I just lost interest. Yeah he’s brilliantly perceptive. Both main characters are the same - they are supposedly quickwitted and intelligent with the only difference being the FL is the tough guy while ML is the weak counterpart who relies on his brain more than brawn, but that’s just about it. There wasnt any surprises to hook me on. Even the main mystery of Peiyi’s family massacre isnt enough to keep me on. It’s funny there actually wasnt many parts of the story that annoys me enough to drop this, but instead the lack of plot growth that made me lose interest.

It’s basically a story of a lady officer investigator of Palace Investigation Bureau (they investigate cases that happen in the palace) who is also a princess, running around doing her job while getting set up and led elsewhere by somebody big behind the scene, along with her trusted follower and a reluctant dept of astronomy vice director who is torn between avoiding her due to their past (that Peiyi had already forgotten, yeah the usual amnesia trope) and helping her with every case cuz she keeps getting in trouble and get endangered for them. The plot is too monotonous for my liking, failed to grab my attention, so I’ll just go ahead and drop this to avoid further waste of time.
