First impression

I'm happy to see Seto Toshiki in yet another BL.
The start is giving My Beautiful Man in the worst way possible. I really didn't enjoy that series, so seeing how similar the beginning is gave me a strange feeling. However, I can tell that the rest of the series won't be like that, so I'm looking forward to more.

Episode 1:
I generally had no expectations for this series, but that was an incredible start.
I really like both of the main leads, their dynamic and everything else.
I'm really excited for the next episodes.

Episode 2:
* I really like how Seto Toshiki looks here, they really made him look great for this series. Dark hair and glasses are a great look on him.
* I like the intro song. Japanese BLs/GLs always have great OSTs.
* I like seeing the main character navigating and learning how to act with their new dynamic. Now that he is no longer giving commands.
* Takaaki is so down bad it's insane.
* I'm really proud of Naoya, he is growing more and more with each passing episode.

Episode 3:
* Everything is pretty good, the main leads are slowly trying to navigate their new relationship while Naoya also slowly goes back to finding and being himself.

Episode 4:
* Mori-san being quite literally a father figure for Naoya is so great to see. He is so supportive and nice, what an awesome character.
* I like all of the differences between the main leads, their aesthetics, their way of talking, and everything else.
* Takaaki getting jealous over Naoya finding himself and being happy feels icky. I of course knew and expected him to be kind of possessive, but that's a bit much. I can, however, appreciate the accountability from him.

Episode 5:
* This whole episode felt like the calm before the storm.

chemistry so good i forgive their red flags

this show would be over a lot faster if they cleared the air with one (1) conversation, but i forgive it because it's such a banger. they're both kind of insane for a good chunk of this but it's sufficiently justified that it didn't lose me and oh my god the CHEMISTRY.

i see now that this was what love beyond dreams was trying to emulate. lingorm and mieaya have a similar dynamic: ling and mie's gazes alone are lethal (in both love and hate); earn (orm) and aran (aya) are both trying to win over an ex who's very actively pushing them away; lada (ling) and lené (mie) are both extremely harsh in their rejections. I'm pretty sure they even use the exact same set/location for the executive office.

the differences are significant though. where mie's performance is completely unhinged and way over the top, with insufficient narrative justification, ling's fury is mature and nuanced, with good reason from lada's perspective. it's a rage and hurt that bubbles beneath the surface. she's visibly fighting to keep her emotions from overwhelming her. when we see flashbacks to the abject state she was in during and after the break up (masterfully acted btw), it's apparent just how much she's holding back.

none of it would work if they weren't so cute (and hot) together ofc, but thankfully they really, really are. i'd say LenéAran are 70% heat, 30% sweet. that's flipped for LadaEarn, which is the right balance for this show. the love has got to be so strong even lada's manipulative, homophobic mother can't deny it (it is, she can't, i cried).

overall, the production values are pretty strong too, except for the lackluster OST and opening/closing credits (so far it seems only gmmtv can do this well) and the bizarre decision to use an aspect ratio change to bracket flashbacks. maybe it could have worked if they kept the widescreen aspect ratio throughout the entire flashback, but they clearly didn't want to do that because they shot all the scenes for 16:9. they also do a slow transition between the aspect ratios every time, which is distractingly languid and really misses the *flash* in flashback. weird, weird choices.

but before i end this review, i have to shout out the supporting characters: lada's friend group at the hospital are true ride or dies and i love their dynamics; earn's agent/hypewoman is an absolute delight and her beef with bow's agent is great; and lada's mother is a heinous nightmare (complimentary).

Underwhelming

I was so psyched for this series! it looked super cool, interesting story and above all SKY and Nani! omg their chemistry is so freaking good that even if the script were to be garbage they would still be good.

I am unfortunately very disappointed in the final product, I mean it was good enough that I watched the entire 9 episodes in one sitting without getting bored, but it still feels like it was lacking something. I finished this last night and I wasn't interested in writing a review, I felt like I had nothing to say about it, but the more I think of it the more this disappointed feeling grows, again the leads are fantastic, the supporting cast is equally great, Krist is so amazing in this that I didn't even recognize him at first just brilliant!! the story is pretty cool, it looks great and the soundtrack is good,
but it doesn't live up to it's potential. I wanted more, more action, more horror, more lore.

The final fight didn't really feel final, the just defeated this supposedly all powerful demon in a few minutes like nothing, Pete after awakening his power seemed weaker than before, other than jumping really high and a different fight style he was the same, but somehow weaker.

The whole thing feels unfinished, incomplete just not as good as it could've been. Maybe I should watch it again, maybe there's something I missed, but, allthough I did enjoy this and found it interesting and funny, I don't think it's worth a rewatch.

I’ll Die on This Hill: They Call It True Love, I Call It Toxic

Let’s be honest, Li Xun is one of the biggest red-flag characters I’ve ever seen in a romance drama. He’s not the misunderstood bad boy people romanticize, he’s just a walking disaster with anger issues, superiority complex, and emotional baggage so heavy that even his intelligence can’t save him. Being a top student doesn’t magically excuse being a jerk. Yes, I understand he’s wounded and carries that “misunderstood genius” aura, but if he were a real person and I were Zhu Yun’s best friend, I’d be shaking her and telling her to run. He’s not the kind of bad boy you can fix, nor is he some cute tsundere archetype.

If Li Xun existed in real life, I’d fully understand why Zhu Yun’s parents were against him. In fact, that might be the biggest takeaway from this drama: maturing is realizing the parents weren’t villains, they were the only sane people in the room. Zhu Yun was way too good for him and too blinded by this dumb thing called love.

That said, I understand the hype, I get why people were hooked. The drama thrives on chaos, their relationship is toxic and full of angst, addictive in exactly the way toxic love stories are meant to be. While the chemistry and angst may be compelling for some, romanticizing Li Xun as the ideal man, and even fanboying Arthur Chen solely because of this character, feels a little dangerous.

However, calling this “drama of the year”? That’s a stretch. And if there’s one lesson this drama teaches, it’s this: if he’s a red flag and you’re looking at him through rose-tinted glasses, all you’ll see is your own future suffering. Sometimes love doesn’t conquer all, sometimes it just leaves scars.

Trauma exists, living in it shouldn't be an excuse

I liked this series for the time it took to deconstruct their relationship. Not rushed, evenly paced and realistic. The actors did well and their failings realistically told. It was engaging and introspective to encourage thought but also reactive. One couldn't watch without seeing all their flaws and form opinions.

The both ml, Itsuki and Yuma, were hiding. Yuma from facing the reality of their relationship until the end. He still holds on to a memento, unable to throw it away. Itsuki living in his past trauma and being overly critical of other peoples views of the gay community. He refuses to be the poster boy of a successful gay union but lives freely and comfortably under the one who is fighting the cause.

I treasure Itsuki's honesty but it pops up at his convenience. He is very critical of Yuma and refuses to communicate beyond derision and in so doing fails even in his last interview to see how Yuma has changed. Even at the end it is selfish. Yes, their projected views are incompatible, but who goes along just existing? He knows Yuma types are the one to make the changes in the world but is content to live while they fight. I'm not advocating for him to be always on guard, and fight every pos out there but he seems apathetic and wants to be remembered. For existing? He disrespected him to the point of bringing a lover to their home. A home he contributes nothing financially to as he is unemployed and was offered a space even after they broke up initially. Yuma doing this alone should have stopped him.


Yuma on the other hand still struggles to let go of the ideal. He fights for the positive views of the gay community and would go to lengths to protect it. In so doing, perpetuates a lie and fails himself. He loves Itsuki but their incompatibility works against him. He pushes him but because they communicate ineffectively, or not at all as Itsuki ignores or is apathetic, he doesn't know how to understand where they went wrong. In the end, acceptance and understanding comes too late. I hope he does completely move on from Itsuki, he doesn't deserve it.

Shiho faces adversity on either side and understands at the end her true worth and not the perception. Her boss should be removed. His condescending attitude should not be dealt with. I felt the pain of Naomi and was grateful she apoligized to Shiho. She felt lost and lashed out at the wrong person.

I applaud this series for showing the reality of relationships. Not all work. Not all are balanced. It's okay to move on. It's not okay to be used.

A phycological drama following 2 lonely souls find their heal in each other while seeking revenge.

it took me a while to write this review since it's my first review about a drama ever, but i feel i need to write this ... this drama truly deserve more hype.. here's an honest review of what to expect from this drama

FIRST,

*The drama story telling; to have an actual "FL POV" turly done well ...*

if your a person who likes reading novels and unravel the true events chapter by chapter this drama will certainly get you hooked.

i find this style of story telling of this specific drama is to be realty unique and brilliant and one of kind in the c drama. The complex narrative of this drama is what makes not everyone cup of tea ..
The narrative follows the FL all the way to the end of the drama so don't expect everything to be spilled to you from first few eps. The turn is the FL herself having a mental illness makes her unreliable narrator of the story. And our understanding of the story will only be from what the FL understand about her world and so the plot will always feel a little incomplete [like we actually don't know exactly what happened in the past except from FL perspective] until the FL discovers what's actually happened in the past herself [and us with her] and then also the other characters.


*As for the ROMANCE*

Characters having their first meet in their wedding night...
both being deeply broken with insecurities...
both focusing on their revenge as main goal...

The romance in this drama is also not typical yearning trop, but mature respectful one with ML bein total green flag (sometimes scolding FL..).
having established that the romance in this drama is slow burn, you need to focus on their micro-expression and their EYES looking to each other.. there's not much kissing scenes but you will find your self getting blushed, burying your face in a pillow..

you can expect:
- FL being so direct with ML initiating skinship, hug him, sleep on his leg so suddenly and early on before they're close.
- ML getting flustered onetime telling her to leave his house if she don't like it and the second minute get a side smile from her touch.
- The intimacy level between the leads will make you caught yourself smiling to the screen as if invading their privacy. Both being venerable about their insecurities with each other..
lots and lots of pillow talk and a good communication with rarely any misunderstanding (expect one to move the plot forward and resolved very fast).
- Other than physical touch, we also got all other forms of love expression:
act of serves, words of affirmation (ml making sure to ask FL if she still feel lonely if she's happy, if she's healthy),
husband returning home everyday with pastries to his wife (especially when he's in trouble).
-They will start acting like old married couple with lots and lots of soft moments that shows them being so in love with each other, being intimidate and real as husband and wife having a true bonding moment


*As for the plot, *

It's not related to the novel, BUT better than the original novel.
The plot is not for unmature people who looking for a simple romcom. it's slow paced romance between a mentally ill wife and a physically ill husband with intense political revenge (and dark humor).

the story revolves around main characters planning their revenge due to some incidents that happened in the past during a point of turning the power in the empirical balance results in main characters along with others being victims as they are caught in the middle of the fight. you should expect to see a empirical conflict just like any other historical drama. however, you need to be paint with the plot as the true events unravel slowly as the episodes goes. i would say don't expect to understand the revenge lore from the start we still didn't get the whole idea until all events unravel in later episodes.

Although the drama started with a wedding and FL fill first killing whoever missed with her husband and ML starting to fall down bad for his wife, this drama hits your emotions soo deeply with the story mainly focus on portraying other venerable emotions so be ready to cry with the characters as they try to heal each other.
you would see very strong character who are very educated or holding high ranks being broken and vulnerable only with each others as husband and wife yarning for love in their lonely live without releasing until they met.

The drama also conveyed some deep topics like death very good. while other criticize it for being always sad, i found it to be very comforting and as ML talked about it very gently soothing FL about the topic leaving you genuinely touched by his talk.

The plot also included messages about true good shouldn't be build on others sacrifice, and that people can't get a way without held accountable even if they made a good ruling afterwards, the cycle of bullying and forming aligns within the palace.

gotta say this is the first ever c drama that i feel is really mature in plot and delivery even as a person who like silly romcom, the vibe of this drama makes you can't move on once you finished it, it's the most c drama with touching events, characters being mature, real, and relevant in their grieve, love, anger, sadness, seeking justice.


*Finally, for the acting and filming*

for Bailu, i seriously can't imagine any other actress doing that role.. still i believe that role are my favorite for her so far o vulnerable and strong at the same time proving again how excellent she is.

For chenglei, he's a true master of micro expression.
i believe that MoLi is his second major hit role. His role in MoLi was different from a usual typical romcom drama but he showed that his acting abilities could be handle a complex phycological plot. His character showed different range of emotions and vulnerability that wasn't just about acting like a strong ML but also made his role [and overall all the drama vibes] to have a sense of being "real" or a relatable at some level with little talking.

For the director and writers they truly did a masterpiece.. making an adaption serious is always difficult given the expectation they had to deal with.. but here she was not only able to make a work that actually stand on it's own but even better than novel in some aspects...

*Also the director made sure to make this drama the most realistic drama in production now !! actors with no face filters and their real voices you could heat their breathing and crying just make it much more whole*

Not my cup of tea

I personally couldn't get into it, I gave it three episodes, but it felt like a chore to try and get through them. And after waiting and thinking some time, I just didn't feel like finishing it. In my opinion it's just not good, there is no character that I would actually like, and the plot itself is quite lacking.
The main character honestly started to get on my nerves pretty quickly with his childlike behavior.
Everything was happening quick and so weirdly. I genuinely lost my interest fully while watching the second episode.
I'm sure that there are a lot of people who would enjoy this series, and that's great, I can even see why.
Unfortunately, I'm just not the target audience.

When Potential Isn't Enough: A Romance That Forgot to Romance

Kind of frustrating, potential was there.
Lets talk about the characters a little because I need to vent.

The only scene where Dr Jiu does something for the female lead in all of 7 episodes: 1) Helped her in the hospital in dealing with her
2) get jealous whenever Hari talked to the second ML.
3) Gave up his bed for Hari to stay in.

This man needs to speak up. Being weak physically doesn't make you any less of a man. Being scared of insects doesn't make you a loser.

But you being bad at communication and not making an effort to make it better however does make you look pathetic. Sure he is a good doctor. But there are other more important things that define your character.

My patience dried out in that one scene where the annoying contractor comes and pushes the female lead and he does nothing but stand there while the second male lead immediately jumps in to stop him.

The other thing however he does do is fix her leaking house in ep 8 which I guess is the turning point of the entire relationship. But I mean what about the previous 7 episodes I had to suffer through? Now suddenly he can't help but "see" her. I'm sorry this story is not building up properly.

I'd say the second male lead did a lot more than the main Male lead himself. He got hurt for her and also defended her on many occasions.

Anyways, this show started off quite strong, but it became annoying at some point. The romance looked forced and there isn't any chemistry. The actors did their best with the material, but...that's it.

The second couple did it better in terms of chemistry. They atleast had their sparks.

I might end up dropping it at some point. Lee Jae Wook is such a good actor, why would you do this 😭😭. Shin Ye-eun was very good, as you'd expect. She nailed the acting. Especially that scene where her grandmother passed away :(

Anyways. I'll be updating this in case I continue watching it and eventually finish it, who knows.

The kiss is everything

I realize many folks watch BL just for the kissing. And I'm not gonna pretend like I don't enjoy that as well. The big kiss here is everything; I mean, damn. It is the most polished, intense, emotive scene in the entire series. It says so much without any words. Its sexy, but it's WAY more than just a sexy kiss. It's the culmination of every emotion contained in this drama. And it was brilliantly acted! I felt all the feels. Just a really well executed moment that perfectly captured everything it was supposed to.

There are a lot of good and not as good moments throughout this series, but overall I think its a satisfying watch. And it is actually trying to say something beyond the love story. I find Pinoy BL to be less polished than Thai and other countries with a more developed industry, but this was a very respectable contribution to the canon. And the music is also really good and fits the drama.

Tune into this one. I think you'll enjoy it.

actually really good?

(personal review - all thoughts, opinions, and biases are mine only)

started this drama on a whim after hearing many mixed reviews. it was three episodes in that i realized i...am a complete sucker for this couple's dynamic. i just looove a ML who's completely devoted to his FL to the point of wanting to kill for her. so i was hooked immediately and i was willing to watch the whole way through just to see their development. i'm largely satisfied in that department - contrary to others' opinions, i don't think their first kiss at ep10 is too fast tbh. for a 24ep drama that's really fair because i happen to enjoy watching what happens after they're "together" more than the journey there.

for the story, i find it quite enjoyable. ehh it's a typical revenge-rebirth plot so i didn't have much expectations to begin with, but yeah i think it's pretty good. what it suffers from is just the typical cdrama disease of being halfway done and the plot & pacing goes completely bonkers. it's quite fast paced in the first half then gets kinda draggy in the second half, but i also expected that. maybe sometimes the plot was deceptively predictable too. there were some plot holes and missing scenes but i don't think they were inexcusable. at least to me, if i can still follow along and figure out what's going on that's fine. (the issue surrounding wei village and a-xiang and also the xie clan's elixir were kinda glossed over when i thought they would discuss them in more detail, and that did bother me. but again, all in all it's fine.) but gosh i just love the drama. i like that you can't figure out who really has the upperhand because there could always be someone pulling the strings, i like that you can't trust anyone, i like that characters could be working together at one point and then backstabbing one another. ...which might be the base standard for a political-military drama of this sort, but whatever! it's worthy of praise.

i enjoy chu zhao's scheming, and unlike what others say, i do believe that she is that smart because even in her first life she did show her smarts in governing when helping xiao xun, it was just that she was blinded by love and couldn't foresee his betrayal. speaking of, xiao xun pissed me off in every opportunity available despite his charming face, deng yi pissed me off sometimes (ever since the betrayal at the dock at least) but i like that he is somewhat maybe schizophrenic based on the fact that he constantly talks to a younger version of himself. gosh i wish xie yanfang didn't end up evil because i did want to like him but i just can't not root for chu zhao and xie yanlai. it's sort of weird that he kinda maybe has some feelings for chu zhao too and is posed as a threat for her relationship with xie yanlai but oh well, all that matters for me is that there's no love triangle BS.

the characters were surprisingly complex in my opinion. again, i just didn't expect much getting into this, but i think both main characters and the side characters were well-developed in the sense that their backgrounds, thoughts, actions, and relationships with other characters were fleshed out. there was a point where chu zhao was crying almost every scene for 6? 7? 8? episodes straight? and it kinda bothered me because damn this girl does NOT get a break but then again things *were* hard for her then. xie yanlai is also a good character. his thoughts and feelings toward the xie clan, his birth mother, and the chu family were interesting to learn and follow. even the interests of xie yanfang and deng yi were fascinating. the only character i don't sympathize with is xiao xun because despite everything he is almost fully completely evil.

hmm i personally wasn't too sad watching this, i was only almost driven to tears in the scene where chu zhao talks to a-jiu about wanting her dad to just be her dad. that did move me. but other than that it was fine. i literally couldn't stop watching because the story kept me on my toes til it was 4am. i loveeee this couple i really do, and every scene where they weren't together was painful because they truly shine the most with each other. i don't like that xie yanlai barely appeared on screen after becoming the new general and then he gets a victory killing the northern desert king's son like where? how? can we see???
(chu zhao & xie yanlai shared 3 kisses over the entire thing and 10 hugs or something that at some point i went "you guys aren't gonna kiss? seriously not gonna kiss?" but i also love their hugs. they're just so loving and i love how they support each other.)

i like the main/opening theme, it's somber-sounding at the beginning but gains power over time which really embodies the story i think. other than that i can't think of a very praise-worthy soundtrack. maybe the one at the final scene. that one's also good. the rest are okay, just not that memorable.

...given all of that, i probably won't be rewatching, not for any reason other than that i would be too stressed watching xiao xun win and my girl a-zhao get fucked over all over again.

The Glory is dark, gripping, and emotionally intense. Song Hye-kyo is excellent as a woman methodically pursuing revenge against the classmates who destroyed her childhood. The show is brutal at times, but smartly written, beautifully acted, and hard to stop watching. The villains are almost cartoonishly awful, yet compelling. Not light entertainment, but very satisfying if you can handle the heaviness.

The Glory is dark, gripping, and emotionally intense. Song Hye-kyo is excellent as a woman methodically pursuing revenge against the classmates who destroyed her childhood. The show is brutal at times, but smartly written, beautifully acted, and hard to stop watching. The villains are almost cartoonishly awful, yet compelling. Not light entertainment, but very satisfying if you can handle the heaviness. The supporting cast is outstanding, and every payoff feels well earned.

I was NOT ready for this Pairing!! Insane chemistry

This time I am writing a review not to rant about the drama or complain about wasted potential. I'm writing because I genuinely had so much fun watching this. This is what a rom-com is supposed to feel like. Episodes flew by soo fast before I even realised it.

I laughed so hard throughout the drama that I genuinely choked multiple times. The comedy was effortlessly funny, and for me it's an easy 10/10.

A little late to the party, but I always thought Kim Ji-won had her best on-screen chemistry with Kim Soo-hyun in Queen of Tears, and that no other co-star could top it. Well... I was so wrong. Park Seo-joon and Kim Ji-won completely blew my mind in Fight for My Way. They bicker, tease, comfort, and love each other in such a natural way that you forget you're watching actors. I couldn't get enough of them.

Watching Kim Ji-won again reminded me why she's one of my favorite actresses. Whether she's playing a rich, elegant heiress or a loud, messy, tomboyish girl-next-door like Aera, she makes it feel completely believable.

And Park Seo-joon took me by surprise ? I was convinced he looked his best in What's Wrong with Secretary Kim, but I have officially changed my mind. He looked both ridiculously handsome and adorably cute in this drama, and I was not prepared for that.

What made me love this drama even more was how simple the story was. It didn't try to shock me every few episodes with ridiculous twists or unnecessary drama. It's just a classic friends-to-lovers story that stays true to itself from beginning to end. Sometimes that's all you need.

I also appreciated that both characters had lives outside of each other. Aera dated other guys, chased her dream career, and never felt like a character who only existed for the romance. Dong-man had his own ambitions, struggles, and journey too. I love when romances remember that the characters are individuals first and a couple second. Plus their struggles were soo relatable and real.

One of the funniest surprises was Choi Woo-shik's as Moon-bin. Watching him try so hard to look cool while being unbelievably cringey had me in tears. And that open-air cinema scene? Comedy perfection.

This year has been disappointing for me when it comes to rom-coms, so stumbling across this drama felt like finding a hidden treasure. It reminded me why older K-dramas have such a loyal fanbase.
