Lacking in romance, due to their ages.

It wasn't bad, and it provided some insight that I'm sure will come up again later on. But it was just a bridge to the next episode, dude. Like--I don't care about these seven year olds as much as I'm sure I'll care about them when they're older. Hand me the tragic romance, please.

Tópico encuentro de infancia at its best

Tirando de todos los tópicos de los encuentros de infancia en los Sageuk pero en nivel excelencia. Prometedor inicio.

They had to pack a lot of setup into this…

They had to pack a lot of setup into this episode and I think they did it successfully without the audience feeling like they were being infodumped. The cinematography and production value makes this a pleasure to watch but what's really intriguing is the different relationship dynamics. I'm very interested to see how San's relationship with his grandfather will play out in adulthood. I'm also wondering how Deok-im will break through through San's self-imposed isolation and aloofness. There are certain parallels between their experiences which aren't immediately obvious given their very different stations in life. The life of a court lady is circumscribed by her usefulness to the person she serves, while the king's life is restricted by rules and customs which prohibit him from having close, equal relationships with other people.

a solid start

liked the first episode. the kids were really good especially the girl playing the fl's younger counterpart. they gave a solid start to the main plot. also I don't really mind overused tropes & cliches as long as it's done well & is entertaining. looking forward to watch episode 2 to see how it goes.

So far so good

I have been waiting a while for this drama to premiere because it is right up my alley for saeguk because its more romance than politics and it didn't disappoint but didn't impress me either. I am not too worried though as this episode was mostly setting the seen with the young actors and I have no doubt it will get much better when the adult actors come in and the romance starts.
