Light , fluffy youth romance
Must watch if you are looking for laughter and good time with good acting.Watched drama looking at YouTube shorts. The trailer does not so justice to it.
Story- well written and sprinkled with hI’m our. You will be unable to control laughter at situational comedy in drama. You can relate to few incidents in the story completely.
Acting- the ML actor was simply awesome. He can portray emotions effortlessly and he brought kang jiawai to life. FL and supporting characters were good too.
OST - music was good and harmonious with the story line.
Cons - the end felt to be abrupt and it could have been done better.
Overall well acted well scripted funny drama.

First this show really needed a better title. My Calorie Boy did not pique my interest at all nor do I feel like it really sums up the drama well. I picked this up on a whim when I was mostly looking to watch something with a good friendships and found this as a recommendation for that. This did indeed fit that bill but also did so much more. It kept me laughing and smiling but also did not shy away from skirting around some very difficult topics such as parental expectation and pressure, body weight and image, teaching differences, and grief. This slice of life drama will keep you interested through the casts chemistry and infectious comedy.The two main leads were exceptional throughout the drama and their chemistry together was top notch. Their friendship was so realistically portrayed and acted as they went from wary strangers, to allies, to best friends. Between their bickering and light-hearted teasing you see as their relationship grows and how they naturally gravitate toward each other without realizing it. I also like that this drama does not shy away from the natural skin ship that is normal in young relationships such as the girls linking arms, holding hands and best friends playfully batting each other or sitting close. The feeling of friendship through their actions is felt through the screen. And as the friendship goes these two are the types of friends you wish you had or were. JingJing's overflowing generosity for her friends and JiaWie's unfaltering support.
But this show did not create perfect characters which I loved. Each one is flawed and real. From the teachers that still have lessons to learn, to the parents that hold on too tight, down to the students that grow and change. Everything is seen through the lens of your 17 year old self experiencing the same life lessons and challenges.
My biggest complaint about this show however is the editing and the time lapse, specifically in the last 5 episodes. The majority of the drama takes place in their second year of high school and then as senior year starts time moves very quickly which feels disjointed from the first half of the show but understandable since they primarily need to study and take tests anyway. There are parts where it feels like scenes were cut out as it seems to set it up for something and then move on to something completely different. And then the last episode happens where there is a complete jump over the college years and it is 4 years later where everyone is now in their career and it felt so unrealistic and unsatisfying. It does have a happy ending in the last 3 minutes which is far from enough for me. Still with these flaws I still really really enjoyed this drama.

Incredibly FUNNY, HEARTWARMING/moving, and INSPIRING drama of 2022
BEST show I've watched (out of many other dramas and films) this year!Interesting storyline, good use of humour and mystery/suspense, and convincing acting made it not just entertaining but also quite IMMERSIVE and inspiring (from a viewer's perspective at least). Beyond the humour in story arcs and the great micro-expressions in the acting of the cast, it's also a good piece of work that's EMOTIONALLY ENGAGING and REFLECTIVE.
As a viewer you feel like you are not just watching the story from the screen but actually feel like you are in those scenes, JOURNEYING with the characters as the story progresses.
This drama is both IDEALISTIC and REALISTIC: it *shows* the interests, behaviour, and aspirations of youth while they face the stresses of friendships, crushes, and academics. The realistic aspects of the drama makes it relatable to real life, while the idealistic parts of the drama make it very encouraging and inspirational. Also, love how the drama weaved in various references to other songs/dramas/anime/films in the drama itself - it was coherent and also made me curious about some of these other mentioned shows.
I loved the main characters (the youth of the class) and their homeroom teacher (their acting are so NATURAL and CONVINCING) but *Special Mentions* to the FL's parents - they are extraordinarily interesting and entertaining characters that you rarely see in any other drama or film and it's quite a refreshing take on how parents have been portrayed in dramas.
Also, love the MUSIC/OSTs of the drama (esp. the opening and ending theme songs sung by the ML and FL respectively) - *but the feels listening to them only sinks in more deeply as you watch the story unfold - and also that the dialogue in the drama are not dubbed (as it usually is in Cdramas) but are the actual voices of the actors and actresses.
[On a side note, if anyone's confused about NAMES because both the FL and the 2FL are written as Xu Jing Jing in the subtitles, their names are pronounced differently in Mandarin (and spelled differently in hanyu pinyin romanization) -- the FL is named xǔ jīng jīng (许晶晶) while the 2FL is xú jìng jìng (徐婧婧).]
P.S. I know there has been some discontent over the ending (which I myself can't quite get over too - if the ending was better my rating might have been a 10) BUT it largely does not affect how great this drama has been.
*Perhaps in the production team's defence, (if you can read chinese and look up chinese social media) the director gave comments saying that the filming was limited by budget but also weather (there was a impending typhoon/cyclone when they were filming the series). -- Actually this gives me hope that there is POTENTIAL for a SEASON 2 not just to fill in stuff but also to further develop and expand on some of the side characters.
**AND please don't fast forward or skip when watching this drama - if you would like, I'd suggest you pay attention to the *details* in the expressions of the cast (even the side characters in the background of any particular scene) or the props/setting used in various scenes (there are a lot of interesting hidden/implicit meanings for you to realize).

Extraordinary youth drama
I've watched many youthful dramas,but this is one of its kind,what a cast, they literally involved us to the story,the ML is a splendid actor he portrayed his role very well, his acting in episode 28 is top notch,we can't stop crying,such a wonderful performance,coming to the story ,it focuses on friendship,career,goals, it not only focuses on the main leads but also focuses on teachers and their stories,never watched such a superb drama till date, I've watched the entire drama in a row for two days,finally a happy ending for the beautiful story of two deskmates in a school.Was this review helpful to you?
I loveee Chinese youth dramas, something about it just feels nostalgic to me because I've watched so many throughout the years and it just never ceases to amaze me being able to watch the MC's grow together and fall in love, it's so cliche but so good. This show did have it's ups and downs and took me longer to watch but it was about a girl and boy that came across due to fate really and the rest was history, the trauma and everything attached was just for the heart strings and I appreciate a good tear jerker for sure. Why it wasn't an overall 10 for me was probably the ending but aren't most endings just rushed and we're all picky at this point? Lol.
Loved the main female lead and main male lead; I loved their chemistry, loved their backgrounds, loved how tough they were and I loved everyone else attached, family, friends, there was nothing negative I didn't like minus the 2nd FL's mom; she could go kick rocks truly.
Music was fantastic, easy to watch, good on queue.
I wouldn't retwatch it but I thought it was truly worth the watch, I was not disappointed overall and I even cried from time to time and I really think that's meaningful to me and so it is something to def watch.

Great introduction to the genre and to dramas in general, but rushed ending wastes its potential
TL;DR at the end with no spoilers.I stumbled upon My Calorie Boy by chance three months ago, and up to that point I had never shown much interest in dramas, to be honest. After all, I already watch anime and that alone eats away at my limited time on this planet more than I'm comfortable acknowledging in public. Now, from all these years lost to anime, I've gotten to know my tastes. When I read the synopsis and saw the poster, this looked to be exactly my thing. I'd managed to hold off until a few days ago, but boy was I hooked as all hell the moment I gave in and clicked play. The outcome is that I created this account to come here and write this. Why, you ask? Well, with your permission, I'll begin talking my way through this coping mechanism of a review while I wait for the feeling of existential emptiness to wear off.
I've been wondering for a long time now how would I go about fleshing out characters and the relationships between them, were I to write a story. When it's well done, you can feel it, but it's hard to pinpoint why. I still don't have an answer and wouldn't know how to do it myself. However, shows like My Calorie Boy have helped me realize one of the keys: it's all in the small things. This is a story about normal people, and normal people don't face life-altering challenges every day; a great deal of substance is hidden in the mundane. You can tell that the writers handled this aspect with care, sprinkling details, actions and passing comments that are later remembered or brought up by other characters. The main actors in particular also convey the progress in the leads' relationship very well through their body language, their use of personal space and their everyday banter. This gives the show a down-to-earth feel: in the real world, you can't help but leave tiny traces of your existence in other people's lives, for better or worse. My Calorie Boy excels at keeping daily life interesting, like any good slice-of-life should do. Now, you may be asking yourself why I'm spending so much time on this part. This is one of my favorite parts of the show as I love over-analyzing these things but, that aside, I believe it's important for the next point.
In a character-driven show like this one, the plot is less about external forces taking over the lives of the characters and more about giving them smaller prompts and exploring what they feel and why they react the way they do. For their actions to be believable, especially when they make mistakes or objectively bad choices, you have to understand where they're coming from. This is where the subtle development in between subplots is crucial. Now, I won't claim every choice is equally realistic even with the characterization, but it works very well for the most part. For the most part, because the ending is a painful exception. I'd like to group my spoilers together and keep this section clean so I'll just say that the ending throws away a lot of character and relationship building. It's not a sad ending, though; it's rushed, poorly-executed, and happy. You have to accept it because we have nothing else, but you're probably in for some disappointment. If I had to say something positive, it's that by the end all the relevant characters had improved as a person, achieved some of their goals, or formed more meaningful relationships—which is the bare minimum, I know.
Before going into spoiler territory, I want to talk about something I only noticed while writing this review: I'm not sure the ML evolves in any significant way beyond not being fat anymore—which happens pretty early on. From then onwards, he has good looks, good grades, and a brand new entitled facet to his personality. Don't get me wrong, he does plenty of good for the FL and for his friends, and he's cool most of the time, but sometimes he displays a mix of entitlement and insecurity about the FL that he never really fixes. At some point during the last third of the series, when his petty jealousy was getting on my nerves, I asked myself if it was poor writing that broke character or simply character development that I just didn't like. I'll leave that up to you. In contrast, the personal growth of the FL is stronger and more readily apparent. Nonetheless, I have the hypothesis that something forced the writers to give up some loose ends, perhaps among them a solution to this guy's biggest personality flaw. Let me explain.
SPOILERS BELOW
As stated previously, this show pays attention to the details. Several things from earlier in the story go from filler to meaningful because they have some kind of influence at a later time. Some of them you can guess they're not random right away, some of them you can't. But, anyway, the show makes it clear that it's deliberate by doing it multiple times over the thirty episodes. You can call it foreshadowing if you want; I don't feel it's exactly the same—not always.
However, there is one object that doesn't get used and, without a doubt, was meant to: the FL was painting a picture of the ML which she planned to give to him as a belated coming-of-age gift. Several scenes feature her either working on it or looking at it. They made a point of highlighting it, only for it not to come up ever again. Based on what I said before, I don't think this is an oversight, nor do I believe the writers would make the plot go this route without even showing her regretting the lost opportunity. You can't just squander your limited money by abandoning plot points like that and, given the rest of the writing, I suspect they didn't want to either. My bet is on budget or time constraints.
But the element that took the biggest hit from the lack of resources is also the main argument for my hypothesis. Episode 29 ends just after the graduation ceremony (by that point the ML was already gone) and episode 30 starts with a 4-year time-skip. The ML moves back home from overseas, waltzes into the office where the FL works and proceeds to talk to her with his same old attitude like four years of no contact whatsoever didn't happen. As the episode goes on, it's revealed that she missed him too, then their friends help the ML to get her to stop being cold to him, and he reveals that he blocked her because of something he misunderstood during their freshman year. Finally, they reunite at the gathering of their former classmates and they kiss after theatrically telling each other what was on their minds the last day they saw each other before the time-skip. There's the happy ending you were made to expect from episode 1, but gloriously underwhelming.
I mean—it shits on everything that made the story great for 85-90% of its run:
1) It forgoes the opportunity to use a relevant plot object. Though, to be fair, they do feature—never thought I'd use these words in the same sentence—an important dog from before the time-skip, which is how we're informed that the ML somehow still has his chances intact with the FL.
2) It fails to fix the entitled yet insecure side of the ML, who's also still unable to communicate important matters assertively and has a tendency to instead write a letter and call it a day unless the situation is already one step away from too late and he decides to finally express himself out loud. Well, that was one long sentence. This was okay-ish before the time-skip, when the leads often got around to talking things out early and they weren't expected to be emotionally mature, but now it's aggravating on top of his other actions. It's not a crime to be this way, but people won't put up with that indefinitely.
3) It handwaves off the zero communication in four years by stating that the ML misunderstood from a social media post that the FL was going out with another guy from her university and he didn't want to bother her. It's idiotic in its own right, but more when we remember that their friends had already helped them out in the past with other misunderstandings and conflicts. There's no way the ML wouldn't have asked them about it even once. He may be insecure and an occasional prick, but he knows what he wants.
Anyway, there are already excellent rants about the ending in this review section, so I'll just end mine here and encourage you to check them out. I hope my arguments about money and/or time being the culprits are also clear by now. To me, it's obvious the ending needed more episodes to prevent the improvisation of an unfortunate mess whose main purpose was to wrap everything up within 45 minutes. It can also be argued that other content could've been cut to make space; however, in my opinion, that amount of cutting would've caused the story to fall apart in other places.

Moving on to the music, luckily I've run out of rants so it'll be short. I like the opening and ending a lot. The FL sings the ending and the ML sings one other song—I found out after the fact—, and it's a sweet, sweet touch when they're used as insert songs. I've listened to the tracks and I can tell from the vocals that neither of them is an accomplished singer, but it's actually better this way because neither are the characters they portray. What I found a bit jarring was the go-to 'problem time' piano track, which evokes impending medical emergency in a hospital-themed drama even if the actual situation is two teachers arguing about school policy.
Speaking of school policy—and to leave more visual safety margin between the spoilers and the TL;DR—, I was surprised to learn that dating while in high school can get students expelled in China. Here I thought Japan shared the top spot in the ranking of academic pressure with countries like China and South Korea, but it turns out it can be taken one step further.
I really liked the theme of freedom of choice for students about to decide what to do after high school. Here, on the other side of the world, parents don't usually force their children to follow pre-determined paths in life. Be it for better or worse, the emphasis tends to be on deciding for yourself—though we've become a bit complacent lately—, so from this point of view it's satisfying to see the kids being allowed to figure that out by themselves. I must say, however, that over here it's easier to let your children experiment more since we don't stake our futures on a single, mind-bogglingly competitive exam like the gaokao.
By the way, that fat suit for the ML was quite convincing, though I can understand why they had him lose 30-40 kilos offscreen in one go during a school break. It's unrealistic, but progressively thinner fat suits would've gotten expensive and would've eaten up—no pun intended—a bigger chunk of screen time. It adds a bit of depth—again, no pun intended—to the ML, yes, but what sells is a hot actor.
Anyway, this is not an in-depth over-analisis but a review and the length has already gotten out of hand. I'll wrap up now with the scores.
Story: 8.5. Despite the considerable wall of text I've devoted to my complaints, they're only about 10-15% of the story and I had a blast during the other 85-90%. Don't worry about the ending, you'll get over it. Keep in mind, however, that it's my first drama and the overused clichés of the genre might be flying all over my head. My review won't warn you if that's the case.
Acting/Cast: 9.5. These people have some serious acting skills, especially the two leads, and more especially the lead actress. They also fit their characters quite nicely. All from the point of view of a newcomer, of course.
Music: 8.5. I like the opening and the two songs performed by the two leads. The soundtrack works well in general, but the 'piano drama' insert track has a vibe that sometimes clashes with the actual drama it's paired with. You'll know what I mean.
Rewatch Value: 9.0. This is the most subjective one. For me, it boils down to my willingness to tolerate the ending, since stopping at episode 29 would be even worse with no resolution at all.
TL;DR:
Though I'm biased toward this kind of show and I'm new to the clichés of the genre (and of dramas in general), I honestly think it's really worth it. For the first 25 episodes or so—maybe a little more—we get smooth, meaningful character and relationship development for the main cast and the most relevant of the supporting cast. The plot is a bit secondary to the characters, although there are relevant events slowly building up in the background that come up in time to make the characters evolve; there's a coming-of-age feel of university being just around the corner, but it saves some learning and some drama for the adults too. Around episode 25 the biggest subplot starts to unfold, and it features a complex dilemma for one of the characters that, by its nature, affects the ending. Unfortunately, by the last episode they had probably run out of money or time, and we're left with an unsatisfying and rushed attempt at a happy ending that also has a negative impact on some loose ends that it was meant to address, including the consequences of the subplot I just talked about. Such a shame, really. You can still love the rest of the show like I did, because it's great at what it does best, but be warned about that.

Best Friends Forever.
A pretty good coming-to-age C drama if you are a fan of the high school best friend troupe.The best part of the show was the fat suit the ML wore for a few episodes. The make-up on his face was so good. I was trying to find where his skin began and where the fake mask was attached. I really enjoyed the parts where he was struggling with his weight.
I wouldn't call this a romance per say, but more of a slow burn, I-have-feelings-for-my-best-friend romance. The main story of the show is about friendships especially within the main group of kids.
I thought the casting was really good. I liked that the leads were 24 and 25 in real life, so they weren't too young and the acting really shines through. I thought the chemistry is really good and felt like they actually liked each other as friends.
The dialogue and banter was really good and there wasn't too much angst in the show. The kids went through everyday life issues, for I.e. a non-approving parent, or a biased teacher or loving a crush from afar.
I do think the drama was a touch too long. They probably should have stuck to the typical 24 episode length C dramas usually do for rom-coms. The last few episodes where it focuses on the Dad's healthy was just too much.
I do wish it could have been a little more like "A love so Beautiful" where you got some episodes where they were outside of high school and working in the real world, but it's a high school drama, so there you go (and you get one at least).
Overall, it was entertaining, funny and the acting was good.

slice of life high school - college - work drama
My Calorie Boy - 9/10 cdramaafter long time its first high school youth drama I really enjoyed.
Usually its hard for me empathize with highschoolers since its been too long when I was living student life moreover asian schools are quite different to European ones.
this drama is slice of life which changes main focus as story progress it starts with friendship bonding continues with romance seeking later on future path picking and getting through obstacles like tests and parents and this way it continues.
Romance part is quite slowburn mainly cause protagonists are young and writer evidently wanted mix relationships its why he went to usual route of main leads miscommunications and being dumb to their own feelings.
plot - ML comes to highschool as new transfer student he is quite fatso and foodie but top student . Right first day he meets FL and becomes her classmate,desk-mate and friend. ML and FL both gets crush on their classmates. ML and FL makes pact which will help them with their romance life. ML helps FL with studies meanwhile FL helps ML with weight loss.

Simply woaooooo......This drama one of most beautiful drama I watched this year. The acting of male lead was amazing.. He was in drama "The oath of love". He played good act in that drama... He is rising star. The female lead always good actor... I have seen her most drama... Whatever the story of drama plot is simply amazing. I am regretting why this drama only have 30 episodes. The plot between ML and FL is good written and not boring at all. They also played great, makes it natural. The scriptwriter keeps it too natural, makes that conversation in real life... No extravaganza.. Even the supporting role are also likes like main lead.. One dialogue I like most that is, you are main character in your own life under your own spot light... I have a great time watching this drama... Hope that it can grow more people attention... Beautiful work...

From the story, the plot, the casts, even the ending is beautiful 🤎 Their reunion was not given much justice in the ending but the flow of the story is beautiful. Even though the friendship of the main leads took a long time, it's still enjoyable hahaha. The story and the plot are very youthful, promise! It just took longer for them to have a crush on someone else, but it's not irritating because their friendship is strong. Overall great watch
Loved the oveall depiction of the school life.What i loved
1. The friendship and different equation between group of school students. I have seen 5-6 school dramas and this is one of the best depiction . You can clearly see how all classmates have such good easy going friendship but still everyone has different level of communication and understanding with each other. Be it having group of friends but one best friend, crushes , girl gang. Lot of dramas showed group of friends but they never showed in details like actually communicating or just sitting down and discussing except ML FL and may be SFL or SML equation. Here we can see how each one of them help others in different capacity when one is in need.
2. How you can still be jealous of your friends even if you care for them and go through that phase of competition.
3. Loved how they showed different family and their equations. All the above things in just 30 without feeling its being dragged is a good feat . i had to drop another show which got repetitive after just 10 episodes(Our secret)
4. FL and ML . FL is not dumb or too kind or too sensitive shy crying around . She is very straight forward and sensible. ML is not a genius cold person but very warm with everyone and helps everyone in the class. And they both help each other out and value each other and are open about appreciating that.
What i didnt like :
One small cribbing i have is i dont get it when ML or FL change their stream just for each other. its their future they cannot ruin it. I get that school students are impulsive but adults should help them. What was that ML applying for a not so good university for FL. FL got angry which makes sense but they should have showed may be by teacher or someone how wrong it is to chose your future that way. Its just gives out a wrong message otherwise.
