editSynopsis

This drama is a remake of the popular suspense drama The Devil that was aired in Korea in 2007. Ryo Naruse is a two-faced lawyer: on the surface, he is a kind-hearted soul, representing the poor and earning the nickname "The Angel Lawyer" from the press; but unbeknownst to anyone else, he is also a "devil," meticulously plotting the perfect revenge against those responsible for his younger brother's death. Naoto Serizawa is a detective whose overzealous methods mask a dark past which he is trying to overcome. When a family acquaintance of Serizawa's is murdered, Serizawa is thrust in the middle of a multiple homicide case which stirs up memories of a dark event from his past.

This drama in one word is: sad. It left me depressed and thinking about life for a long time after I watched this. And as a Christian, it's even more sad and heartbreaking. (I"m not sure though if people will understand what I mean.. hehe.)

So why'd I rate it highly? Well, because the drama was brilliantly executed.

Story: The plot was unique unlike most dramas that tend to be a total cliche plus the story really had a deep meaning about revenge, hatred, redemption, love, and faith. But since this is a remake of a korean drama, the credit for the story should probably be given to the korean writer. :)

Acting/Cast: I think all of the actors did a really great job at portraying

Maybe I'm over doing it with rating it all 10s but I really can't find a reason to lower any of the scores. I wasn't really impressed with Ohno Satoshi before watching Maou, but now I have totally new found respect. He plays a very calm, cold character so it may seem like his acting skills aren't tested much, but the moments when the character shows emotion he pulls so tightly at your heart stings... really touching. Ikuta Toma plays a character very suited to him, I think, and I enjoyed his part very much. All in all the story was enjoyable not too predictable but believable as well, I also found the ending very satisfying, personally, it may be different for other people.... watch it read more

I finally managed to watch Maou's pilot episode (I liked the original Kr version) and it seems I'm going to love this, and most likely 7 would be the lowest score it would get from me (7 is a compliment if it was from me).
So far, what it lacks from its Korean counterpart is the awesome soundtrack Mawang has..
I definitely will catch the rest of the episodes once my PTW list is getting alot slimmer.. :D

Awesome! It wasn't too short either, since if there were like 20 episodes 8 of them would have been less exciting. The ending was also okay, since it must have been quite difficult to think of an okay ending. I loved it completely. I will have to watch it again another time =)

I really enjoyed this drama! I never could have guessed Ohno to be such a great and emotional actor.

Though this version seems to be more popular and far more well-known than the original korean version (I guess the cast of mainly idols plays a significant factor, especially with an Arashi-member involved it's bound to be more popular), I still prefer the latter one. If you think Ono is great (and he did surprise me positively with his convincing acting) then JJH is brilliant. Ikuta wasn't bad, but he certainly wasn't on par with Ono either, let alone with UTW.
The Devil is more mature, more suspenseful, detailed in plot and character development. I also like the music better, and even the supporting cast was great which is not the case with Maou (hated Ryoko's portraying of the female main).

Oh-chan!! This is by far the best drama I have seen!! it was an amazing drama from beginning to the very end. My admiration for Oh-chan is deep, no one could play Naruse as amazing as Oh-chan. And Ikuta Toma was superb. Do watch this minna!!

I love both versions, honestly. However, the best thing about Maou is that it takes the amazing story line and cuts out all the slow parts. If you like a lot of build up and a relatively slower pace, you'll probably prefer The Devil over Maou. However, suspense lovers will definitely enjoy Maou more imo (: I personally liked seeing things from the lawyer's perspective (his personality is far more interesting, in both versions), so I lean a little more towards Maou.

I loved the Devil, I have no love for this version, however. Even though both are versions of the same drama, chances are if you liked Maou, you may not like The Devil and vice versa. Maou is more fast paced, has popular teen idols and is pretty detailed but doesn't build tensions quite as well as Mawang. Mawang is more adult, has more depth, better acting and is longer. Therefore, Mawang is recommended for those who like more depth and stories told in a more detailed way. Maou is recommended for younger viewers and those who prefer shorter and fast-paced stories. However, tyhe japanese version does focus more on the lawyer- and so adapts a different perspective, the korean version follows the detective much more, which gives it a rationale to watch both versions to fill the different angles.
