editSynopsis

At the dawn of the new millennium, Japan is in a state of collapse. Unemployment is endemic and school violence is out of control. The beleaguered government retaliates with Battle Royale. Each year, a randomly chosen class is pitted against itself on an abandoned island in a cruel game of survival. The rules of the game are simple: 1) it lasts three days; 2) Each player starts with food, water and a "weapon"; 3) if more than one player survives, everyone dies (by detonating special electronic necklaces; 4) there is no escape. Takeshi Kitano plays a downtrodden teacher turned Battle Royale operation leader. As the game progresses, terror and panic challenge the students' fragile trust in each other. But despite the game's brutality, the adolescent players remain obsessed with their crushes, their petty grudges - and their dreams.

Though I heard of this movie since I was in primary school I never actually watched it until today. Battle Royal is not just a movie, it's an existencial question: when the only rule is "to kill or be killed" ,what is the human being capable of doing? how will he behave?

STORY: The storyline is pretty simple and I even thought there were some "holes" in it but -as I said before- the -frightening- existencial question behind it draws the viewer's attention and makes him wonder "what if...".

ACTING/CAST: The acting is pretty average but it's actually a good thing because if the actors had acted too well the movie would have been unbearable to watch (I still shiver when I think of the delirious

So it's been a long time coming, but I've finally watched this movie. To be honest, I'm not sure if I would have been able to watch it were I any younger. I'm not a person who's very easily left mouth gaping at deaths in movies, but from the beginning of this movie to the very end, I was in tears. I gave this a 6 on story and on rewatch simply because I don't think I could deal with how painful the movie is a second time, and the story is seen a lot more frequently nowadays and isn't all that original, though I've read that the novels and manga are even more in depth than the movie was. At any rate, the movie does read more

I wanted to like it but I love the book sooo much that the movie disappointed me. There're good adaptation but here it's a NO for me. The death scenes were so weird, espacially for Kitano : The man tooks I don't know how many bullets in the stomach, he's lying on the ground, his cellphone rings and then he stand up and pick up the phone AND after he died. I was "Hey man, what are you doing ? You're dead, accept it !" xD

Best Japanese movie I've ever watched!
Its greatness lays in the fact it leaves you with something to think about even after it's over...

Would you categorize this as 'horror'? Or just as 'Hey let's just kill teens in a way that will make everyone able to watch' ?

I do not think that it's fair to compare this movie to the Hunger Games in anyway at all, because while they both deal with the same concept, they're on totally different levels, and both great by themselves. It's a little annoying to see them compared and have one scored as "better" than the other.

Well, they ARE pretty darn much alike. The concept is exactly the same, having kids kill each other on an island. The "fantastic and not at all predictable plot twist" at the end where more than one person escape from the island is present in both movies as well. We have the crazy yet talented killer character, the shy and quiet character that doesn't want to be there, and the main character that doesn't want to kill anyone but does what needs to be done, and saves their friend. It strikes me as similar, but I may be wrong.

I really like this movie :D all the killing/deaths were done well, but it was kind of predictable that Nanahara and Noriko would survive and get off the island. I was hoping I would be surprised when it came to their fate, but it doesn't take away from the fact that this movie was really good~

I was so sad when I watched this movie because I expected so much more from it after falling in love with the book. I still suggest others see it because it's still interesting.

It has a very interesting original idea, but it's quite old. Hunger Games improved on this a lot, but you've got to give credit to the original.
