**Note: this review contains minor spoilers. **

There are dramas that you watch and shortly forget about. There are dramas that you occasionally recall, but are not too memorable. Then, there are dramas that remain with you for a long time and immediately come to mind when asked about good dramas in general. Jejoongwon undoubtedly belongs to the last group. It has a “complete package” that is sure to please its viewers.

Jejoongwon tells the true story of the first western medical hospital in Joseon era Korea. There are three central stories to Jejoongwon: the so called “rags-to-riches” story, the rivalry between two very competent people story, and the love story. All of these sub-stories are told in a very different manner than most k-dramas, and

Times are a changing' is a suitable tagline for this drama, set at the decline of the Joseon dynasty era.

The story is slow but once it ends, it leaves the viewer with a feeling of great satisfaction and completeness. There is a sense of having experienced a change; it's also a very consistent drama in terms of pace, development and balancing some things out; it's a steady story but I felt butterflies and knots when things got to a particulary meaningful or touching moment.

In short, it's a heart-warming and heart-wrenching drama about changes and progress, about great difficulties and political changes and a hopeful drama about good people struggling to be happy and help others, to bring about a change; it is also a

  • Both are quite long historical dramas with a very strong story, great cast, great development and a lot of substance. They take their time in telling the story; both also have similar medical-healing theme, although Jewel in the palace focuses more on the development of a single woman while the range of Jejoongwon is more sweeping, encompassing a much broader theme of introducing western medicine and establishing western hospital in Korea on the background of some political upheaveals, while following the story of three students and their trials and tribulations and also features some really memorable, strong, good and also some progressive-minded characters.

is this based on historical facts?
    • BladeySteeleye Mar 27, 2012
it is. Jejoongwon was an actual hospital and Dr Allen is a historical figure, there is a good recap of historical events on thidie's blog: http://thundiesprattle.com/tag/jejoongwon/

the background is woven into the story but Hang Jung and Seok ran are just a part of what I'd say is what could have been, i think it does a ptrety good job of mixing fiction and some facts and the research of the writer seems to have been good; also it;s clearly a writer with an interest in medicine since that same writer also created the white tower.

I actually have the great white tower (japanese version) but unable to continue it coz of watching other medical drama straight like Bong Dal hee, Jins and Sign. And there was a korean version right?
    • BladeySteeleye Mar 27, 2012
The kiorean is the original one,; oh did you like bong dal hee?
    • bokami Mar 27, 2012
korean ver 2007, japan ver 2003 lol^^ also a japanese novel.

i kinda like it but..i found it very slice of life and medical based. and im afraid of hospital ^^

      i have watched it twice.

    • BladeySteeleye Mar 27, 2012
oh! intresting, i thought the korean version of the whiote tower was original! thanks!

I've seen all the dramas from the Jejoongwon screenwriter. I saw Jejoongwon first and it is one of my favorite dramas I've ever seen. Because of this I was eager to watch Spotlight, but that drama is freaking awful. It's one of the worst dramas I've ever seen. I saw White Tower last and I loved it but not as much as Jejoongwon. I still gave White Tower a 9/10 though while Jejoongwon has a 10/10 of course. It's just strange how such a talented screenwriter could make something as awful as Spotlight.
    • BladeySteeleye May 22, 2012
Haven't really seen spotlight, is this the one with ji jin hee? And I haven't seen this writer do a drama since JJW..maybe they are out of ideas, or working on something now. Maybe he though spotlight was a good idea but good ideas conceived by the writer are sometimes a) good only yo them b) spoiled in the drama production process c)not explored well enough. perhaps he'll come up wth something new someday.
    • Canas May 26, 2012
Yes, it's the one with Ji Jin Hee. Also keep in mind, Jejoongwon was made before Spotlight.
    • BladeySteeleye May 26, 2012
right. well you never know, sometimes these ideas are hit or miss, but I am very glad jejoongwon came to be and I am hyped t see it getting more viewership these days. It must have been one of the most overlooked underrated dramas of 2010, if not in the history of dramas.
    • Canas May 26, 2012
Actually I made a mistake typing up the last response I did. I was trying to say Jejoongwon was made after Spotlight. White Tower was his first screenwritten drama.
    • BladeySteeleye May 26, 2012
i see, it;s okay. I am wondering whether he'll be working on any new scripts, I'd like to see another drama from him.
    • Canas May 27, 2012
Yeah, me too. He's a fantastic screenwriter.
  • darkn3ss Jan 24, 2012
Ok I it was a good drama bu I only gave it a 7, because was looking for a more medical accept than the way they focus around all the changes happening in Korea at the time, I mean there are already so many historical drama out there. And I felt like there were not really any closure for any of the characters.
    • BladeySteeleye Jan 25, 2012
Whilew the first part is a matter of personal opinion and to me the beauty of the series lay precisely in how it tried to show the changes- I would hate a throuhgly medical drama, but I will beg to differ with regards to the closure the two leads had a closure, although it may have seemed a bit rushed in the very final scenes. The third doctor was also clearly given the ckosure in those final scenes; Dr Allen being a historcal figure received the closure in asmuch as it pertained to the story. It was the full package with this drama- in terms of exceution, music, storywriting and acting. However, I'd be looking forward to reading your review, sound like you have some interesting insights different reviews may benefit the drama ^^
    • BladeySteeleye Jan 25, 2012
Also, glad you gave it a go, nonetheless. ^^
    • BladeySteeleye Jan 25, 2012
Hmm if you;re looking for more medical, maybe try Hur Jun.
    • darkn3ss Jan 26, 2012
I will review it as soon has I have a minute to myself !!
  • BladeySteeleye Jan 4, 2012
Take note, Jejugwoon is an actual place, dr Allen and a few other characters-historical figures. It's a well written drama that brings to the front a good piece of Korean history, its relation with Japanese and the West, all tied through the development of medicine and the hospital. I am still feeling rather gutted that it was lost among other dramas of 2010. Very bad, this is a good production.
