Non/New were done dirty and the ending is dumb

While the series did start off a little silly and campy, I actually enjoyed it at face value for what it was. However, when the story starts to backtrack to the past explaining what happened with their old "missing" friend Non. It started to become much more different and interesting from your typical slasher-horror genre. The drama between the group of friends and how the story progresses with Non falling into a deeper and deeper pit of unjust situations helps you as the viewer to empathize with Non and despise the group of friends who all had a hand in his downfall. Mio Athens' character Tan, later known as New, was what I was hoping to be the corrector of said injustice brought upon his brother. With the revenge plot twist investing me further into the plot than I already was. So imagine how disappointing it was to watch the final couple of episodes where it feels like it's all thrown out the window. Like many others, the final episode especially felt extremely rushed to me. The hallucination sequences all felt goofy and ridiculous within the final episode as well. And what really dealt the final blow was the "2 years later" bit of the episode where it ends with the most cliche, uninteresting, and basic "Did they really leave, or was it all just another hallucination?" trick. Super boring and unimaginative. Not only that but the death of Non and New had me more mad than anything else in this show. Tee's uncle just gets away with everything and the family is never avenged, which even if it may be realistic, still leaves a sour taste in my mouth that makes me never want to rewatch this series. Overall I appreciated it most for the middle episodes where I felt the story and writing was strongest, it's certainly given me a lot of Mio edits to watch in repeat. 8/10.

Go Girl! Give us nothing!

I've only watched up until episode seven as of writing this review. So please take that into consideration as you continue reading.

First and foremost, this is most definitely not a BL. It has ELEMENTS of a BL, but they're so scarce and non-existent that they practically don't matter. Only adding a little bit of drama alongside other one-sided crushes. Which basically sums up the entire plot of this show. They're all Pearl from Steven Universe. There that's your synopsis. And while there is a key mystery as to who the girl in the film is, its not really addressed throughout the series as much as it should be. One of the characters even mentions that it seems like no one really cares anymore about the mystery. The only time its really brought up in a meaningful manner again is episode seven. Which, honestly wasn't surprising when the new friend to their quartet was in fact...the girl in the video. Now why she hid it or why the teacher is involved is anyone's guess.

I won't sit here and lie it did have its interesting moments but overall this show is just high school relationship drama and it's most basic and immature. Just with the mysterious strawberry girl added in for extra flavor praying it keeps you intrigued throughout the eight episodes. Having said all that I do plan on finishing it, might as well after watching the first seven episodes right? Although I wouldn't have even of started if I knew this wasn't going to be a true BL.

UPDATE; After having finished watching the final EP my opinions have only changed slightly. The reveal of the person who recorded the footage being the female teacher was so obvious I couldn't even pretend to be shocked. And the girl in the video was actually the mother of one of the girls in the friend group. Although the reason WHY the teacher and girl in the video had a falling out I did appreciate. I also do like how each of the characters remained single but were all able to stay friends. Opposite to the teacher and mother's friendship. Honestly could have just been a mini series and it would have been 10X better.

WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Gonna keep this cute and mute by not saying much, as I think this BL is worth a watch, especially for those who are a fan of the step-brothers trope. But despite the fact that this BL will never get that well deserved second season, I truly do feel like this BL is worth the time I spent watching it. The cast was great, the story was heartfelt, and the music was excellent. Even though this BL couldn't be as GAY as others due to censorship, it still felt like an intimate BL rather than a Bromance. This will always hold a special place in my heart and I die a little inside knowing it will remain incomplete for the rest of time.

Ain't no way they ended this on a cliffhanger

Honestly I don't even want to talk about it because this show has already wasted enough of my time. and I don't want to waste any of yours. Do not watch this show. There, if you want to know the reasons why, then you may continue reading at your own accord.

First lets start with the most obvious and glaring issue. The shoestring budget this series had. Now don't get me wrong, BLs with small budgets are my bread and butter. But at least many of those shows have charming characters and a coherent plot for me to follow along with. Time, has none. While this show technically has four couples, only two are developed on and the other two are left as complete afterthoughts. Not that the first two couples have much chemistry or likeability to them anyways. With absolutely zero chemistry and unnecessary sex scenes that drag on for, not even joking, at least five minutes every time. And unlike The Sign and Be Mine Superstar, I was sat waiting and praying for it to be over and move on with the plot.

Which doesn't exist. The boring plot that feels like it has every part of it taken right out of the writer's ass. "Yeah sure, the main couple were childhood friends!" or " Yeah we'll have the rich guy's mom come to the rescue last minute!" The characters also constantly talked about a shady and suspect man whose the leader of the black market or web or something, honestly forgot already. And its only in the end its revealed that one of the main characters is actually working for him, despite him not having been shown or hinted about said association? Which gave me the most second hand embarrassment. As if this show of all things is going to get a second season. Real Hit Bite Love energy with that final scene.

Overall I'm so over this confusing, boring, and messy show. I genuinely wish I had never watched this series and spent my time doing literally anyone else.

Screaming and Crying

One of the very few BLs to actually have me extremely emotional and straight up sob at any given notice. The initial episode already hooks you in with the gimmick of the MC being inside of a game. Extremely unique and I found the dating simulator aspect of this BL to be really fun and engaging. And without spoiling the show, the twist at the end with this exact gimmick is done so well and really tugs on the heart strings. I also don't really want to say much else since I truly do think every BL fan should dive into this BL head first and completely blind.

Pretty privilege at it's finest.

I honestly could not tell you. I watched this BL around half a year ago I would like to say, and the only thing I could remember from it was one semi-romantic scene on a motorbike and the rest is hiding somewhere in the sofa cracks of my mind. I don't remember the acting being anything to write home about either. Basically what I'm trying to say is that you should only watch this BL if you have no other decent options and just want to watch A BL with no expectations or hopes.

Watching hidden in plain site.

Is this BL cliche and absolutely goofy/unserious? Well yeah, it's Fish Upon the Sky babes.

But with that being said, the ridiculous and insanely unbelievable antics that go on within this BL don't take away from the heartfelt moments between the two male leads. Moments that have lived in my head rent free years after first watching. Even the cliches come off more as endearing than annoying. For example, Mork revealing to Pi that he has always cared and loved him from afar is something I would roll my eyes to with a small smirk on my lips in any other BL. But Pond portrays the character with such an earnest and captivating charisma that I can't help but smile and giggle to myself while kicking my feet. Even with Phuwin's character, who should be highly unlikeable and irritating to watch. Is found out to be rather sympathetic and relatable. Which makes you want to root for Phuwin to end up with a man who truly cares for him deeply and admires him. The way he deserves to be, even if he's initially against the clearly destined romance. And despite being yet another University BL, Fish Upon the Sky has always been so different and unique, holding a special place in my heart as my favorite BL. Even after watching hundreds of them at this point. And no other has seemed to be able to match it's energy in how animated it's story and characters are, at least not without being so silly to the point of borderline unwatchable. Nor have they been able to capture such a genuine and loving connection like I feel Pond and Phuwin are able to give us every second they're on screen.
Oh and PondPhuwin >>>
