This is pretty old movie and maybe not everyone's cup of tea. I have mixed feelings about it. The story was pretty good and the movie surely made me laugh a lot. Whether it was the Joker's funny tactics or the-lady-with-the-tattoo's immense bullying, it was funny. The only problem for me were the special-effects. They were really ugly but you can't really do anything about it because the movie is old and there wasn't too much progress in the special-effects scene back when this movie came it. Apart from that it was nice one-time watch. Not for those looking for romance though..
If your a fan of Stephen Chow, then this classical movie won't disappoint you. This movie is loosely based on a classical novel published in the 16th century, known as The Journey to the West. Although this was made back in the 90's, its special effects and props may not be that great. I have to say, this movie is better than the second sequel. Furthermore, this movie is basically making fun of itself like all of Chow's movies before and after it. I can't say this is everyone's cup of tea. However it's always good to keep an open mind!
Classic movie. Must see. I give it very high score not because it's a perfect movie, but because it's very original its aproach to the stories in journey to the west. It's not easy to take those stories and make a comedy movie, mixed with a little romance and tragedy, and not being a total failure or being offensive to the original one. Risky business, but still it come out great for director Jeffrey Lau and actor Stephen Chow. The actors cast is legendary and some of the most charismatic talents un China. The story gets a little confusing haha, and if you don't know a little of the context of the jokes you might get lost. Still is an enjoyable experience.
