My favourite scene:

Variety Shows and Tv Shows aren't two things but same thing which can be called with two names here on MDL :)

Are you sure? That's what I also suspect, but I'm waiting for a confirmation.

But if that's the case, why have a "variety show" tag?

 OldAnimeLady:
Does this clear things up?

No, it actually makes things more confusing, sorry.

Two leads to prove the case that "TV Shows = Variety Shows" are here, though:

https://mydramalist.com/shows/variety (2272 results)

https://mydramalist.com/search?adv=titles&ty=86&so=popular (also 2272 results, and the same ones, two, lol)

A variety show can be split in to different types

-a music variety show where musician perform and possibly interview with a host

-a game show where celebrities host and or participate in games

-a talk show where just a conversation usually BUT NOT ALWAYS in the format of question/answer

-a travel show where a celebrity talks about a place that they love while traveling there.

Does THIS clear it up?

A variety show is "variety entertainment" so it's a show that showcases entertainment, usually in a variety of ways. Eg a Kpop group travelling to a new country, but having to do funny challenges along the way, celebs travelling (example Analog Trip), things such as Idol Room that has visitors do something funny whilst answering questions that aren't in a professonal, suit and tie sitting face to face interview, shows like I'm a Celebrity, etc

 My favourite scene:

I think the confusion she got first was cause of she searched "Variety Shows" and saw " (country) TV Show " below the tv show's name not the " (country) VARIETY show " she expected to saw

Ahh well I hope I cleard it up

Variety show is very confusing to me too because there  doesn’t seem to be consistency in what is defined as a variety show. I found one that I can watch on a legal site so I’m just rolling with it but I still don’t understand the terminology.  The formula of “if then” doesn’t apply.  If this is a variety show then that should be too but often isn’t.

I don’t understand the fine line between Life and Slice of Life.

I also don’t have a Scooby Doo clue what 1000 completed members is. Does that mean that 1000 members  have completed watching that drama?

I’m hoping that the 2000 ranking challenge means a movie I watched that is ranked 99999 meets the criteria.

Please  forgive me this is my first challenge and the jargon is new to me.

I appreciate you all answering our questions.

I can't answer all of these but for 1000 completed members, instead of looking through the breakdown of stats, I just looked at the average rating (8.8 by 123 users). That numbers tells you how many people have rated it with it ongoing, completed, dropped, etc. If you use one that has less than 1000 user ratings, it's definitely less than 1,000 members completed!

ok I hope the xplaination above clears up variety show.

Life I THINK are life lessons and Slice of life I know is more like following the same person/family resolve thier problems.

1000 completed members means users who have rated  -- the middle line on the drama page next to the picture (# of watchers means added to ptw)

We did include screen shots in the FAQ

What I'm confused about is the following...

In MyDramaList, all titles added belong to one of four different types

1) Dramas - 13902 different titles currently

https://mydramalist.com/search?adv=titles&ty=68&so=relevance

2) Drama Special - 2467 different titles currently

https://mydramalist.com/search?adv=titles&ty=83&so=relevance

3) Movies - 19821 different titles currently

https://mydramalist.com/search?adv=titles&ty=77&so=relevance

4) TV Shows - 2272 different titles currently

https://mydramalist.com/search?adv=titles&ty=86&so=relevance

If you see at the top left in any Title page, you can see first thing in Details, in which of the 4 types this title belongs, for example https://mydramalist.com/1-crows-zero

Details

  • Movie: Crows Zero
  •
  • Country: Japan
  •

So this is obviously a movie, not a drama, drama special or tv show.

...

But then we have for example https://mydramalist.com/25565-running-man

Details

  • TV Show: Running Man
  •
  • Country: South Korea

BUT this is also tagged as a Variety Show

implying "Variety Shows" are just a subgroup of some titles belonging to the broader group of Type="TV Shows" as defined in MDL!!!

BUT!!

Also in MyDramaList there's a whole page, accessible from the top bar EXPLORE>Variety Shows, that just shows all titles in MDL belonging to the Type="TV Shows" https://mydramalist.com/shows/variety

I was just waiting for a clear answer of one of the ops, but instead the answers I got until now are referring to just some categories, aka SUBGROUP of SOME titles that are defined as "TV Shows" according to MDL database.

:'(

So, I'm asking again, grasping on some hope that maybe I made myself clear this time:

Are all titles in mydramalist belonging to the 4th type of titles, TV Shows, eligible for the 2020 Watch Challenge "Watch a season of a variety show", or are just some subtypes of them eligible?

No. You need to look at the tags. Only ones tagged as "Variety" are. The top variety is TV Shows -> Tags: Variety Show ^^

If you're still really unsure, just use one of the variety shows people have used as an example ^^ All of them are 100% variety shows. Unfortunately MDL doesn't split "TV Show" into drama, variety, reality, etc so you need to get nifty with tags, hshs

you want to know if all tv shows work including talk shows?
no the challenge says variety shows  so it's only the variety shows

( ) Watch a complete season of a variety show (it must be a season you have not yet watched before)

there is a description in FAQ also what etherealtaekibum  said can be an easy solution too.

it does fit the criteria.

Variety

You and I are in the same boat.  I think with so many people contributing that there is not a consensus on doctrine for Variety shows or Life/Slice of Life.
