THey are a bit different, but not drastically so. I was able to accept them more because of the vibes I got from them.

Xian Qin gave me the vibe of someone who''s very innocent and simple-minded and just new to the whole love business (naive). She doesn't come across as a stalker like the Korean version did.

Zhi Shu is an a**. That's how the character just is, but he's got something to him that makes you feel as if he does actually grow to like/love her. He's not always cruel with her, it's more like he just enjoys teasing her and making her uncomfortable. (He likes to set her off balance).

The two leads of the Taiwan adaptation have much better chemistry. You can see a spark between them. They have been paired up together in a few dramas. :)

If I may, I haven't really watched It Started with a Kiss, but I've seen bits and pieces of it, as well as entire episodes in the past and I am in total agreement with Sleepy.
The whole Itazura na Kiss concept IS based upon a simple yet stubborn girl who goes to huge extent to prove him, herself and the whole world that they are perfect for each other. If you don't like this kind of girl - and I wouldn't blame you - then I suppose it's better to simply avoid the drama, regardless of the version.
However, once you know what this is about, it's possible to look at the three versions from a more detached angle.

The J-version is, in my opinion, unwatchable. It's badly acted, rushed, with bad cinematography and not very appealing actors.

The Korean is very badly edited. It's cut almost at random, some scenes come out as uncomprehensible, characters are thrown in and out in the space of half an episode and you wonder where the heck they have disappeared. The acting isn't brilliant either, let's face it. I love KHJ's smile, but a smile does not carry a drama. And in their haste to pack a long story into 14 episodes (or whatever), they lingered so much on Ha Ni and her silliness that you're left with nothing but disgust. The characters aren't explored, it's all shine and bright colours.

This leaves us with the Taiwan version, which on the other hand takes its time and while you won't meet with a strong, intelligent, independent heroine anyway, at least you get a romantic story and sizzling chemistry, as well as a true narrative arc.

I'm currently watching the reincarnation of GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka) and I'm enjoying it, though Onizuka should be more pervy. I'm wondering if To The Beautiful You will be the final version of Hana Kimi, or if the drama lords will make another version later.
@amrita, something just occured to me, are you reading the synopsis or the reviews that i've been writing for Ikemen Desu ne? the synopsis ARE really short b/c you cant go over 500 characters. for some reason the epusides reviews, which are further down the page are hidden unless you click "show more"
[QUOTE=Jeaniessi;252681]I have seen...

You Are Beautiful
Playful Kiss
Boys Before Barf... I mean Flowers

Is there any incarnation of these Kdramas that I am missing out on by not giving them a chance?

i'm really glad i gave meteor garden a shot. but there are alot of things you must get past, it IS ten years old so the video quality is not what you're used to. you have super bad styling and some of the worst production value i've ever seen. it's obvious Dao Ming Si's "mansion" is actually a hotel, and not even a very nice one. his bed room looks extactly like the stuff in the run down motel 8 i stayed at last thanksgiving. the only reason you know he's rich is b/c people keep saying it.

i havent read the manga so i'm not coming from a place of "how true is it to the manga" i have no clue, but for me Dao Ming Si is the most likeable and believable overall in all incarnations. for me it's hard to say if his acting lacked or if he just played p*d off 13 yo boy REALLY well, b/c that's exactly what he coems across as. he is naive and comes across as childish but not just in a bad way. when LMH and MJ played the character the childishness seemed confined to childishness in a prick sort of way. Jerry Yan plays the character childish all around so it really evens out those moments when his towering man hormones get a hold of him and he's a total BLEEP. for me this incarnation also did the best at convincing the audience that DMS really loved Shencai and that he didnt just want her as his toy.

Wow! Thanks for telling me, because, indeed, I thought your review policy consisted in poignant titles. LOL
And can I add I'm laughing my butt off at some similes? "track stopping lesbian" HAHAHAHAHAHA.

*my man's asking me what's all the fun about from the other room... :p

So do I have this right..

For Playful Kiss the preferred version would be: It Started With a Kiss ~ Taiwan
For BBF - the preferred version would be: Meteor Garden ~ Taiwan
(The only reason I would watch the Japanese version HYD is for Shota. I know that is probably shallow of me but I don't like Matsuduckmouthjun...so I would probably just skip around and watch Shota be awesome)

What about You Are Beautiful? Should I watch Ikemen Desu Ne? I've been curious about this one.

and thank you all for the explanations and descriptions! :)

unfortunately there is not enough of shota in HYD to make up for MJ jumping aorund like a crack addicted chiuaua, kind reminds me of brad pitt in 12 monkeys but otherwise, yea you nailed it.

i'm watching kemen desu ne right now and really enjoying it.

It started with a kiss - Tw - check
Meteor Garden Tw - check - I like Hana Yori Dango, but disliking the lead is going to be a huge problem and like Cityhunter rightly said, GORGEOUS Shota is fantastic in it, but simply too short an appearance in proportion

I preferred Ikemen desu ne to You're beautiful by a long shot. Mind you, it's not a mind-blowing drama, but the two main leads made all the difference, not to mention that it's shorter and it cut almost all the silly parts with the manager and the fans - which in the original made me scream in horror. Even the aunt is way nicer and serves a purpose in the plot. A very cute thing. :)

I want to download but can't find a site with easy download. dorama's links confuse me. Will wait for a while but Ikemen Desu Ne is now on my list! :)
I will say that It Started with a kiss is the best manga adaptation of Itazura Na Kiss, the leads delivered well not like Playful kiss and the japanese version of Itazura Na Kiss which was a disaster. Ikemen Desu Ne is a good remake of You're Beautiful, it would be better if you don't compare it to the original one while watching but i think that would be too hard yet i managed to do so at the beginning but later i couldn't keep up what i was doing and at the end, i liked it and it's definitely a memorable drama.
