I didn’t see Air Doll mentioned.  Crazy.

Some Asian films

And some Western films

Being John Malkovich

Not sure what you mean by provocative, hope you will find something of your taste...

For Japan, I think you can watch some movies by Nagisa Oshima, he made a lot of controversial movies:

I think also at these great movies :

https://mydramalist.com/12637-spring-fever (Chinese movie)

https://mydramalist.com/5114-onibaba (Japan movie)

https://mydramalist.com/5128-chihwaseon (Korean movie)

There are also these two provocative movies that had struck me (I watched once, but will not watch a second) :

- https://mydramalist.com/1520-bedevilled (korean movie)

- https://mydramalist.com/2944-dumplings, (a hong kong horror movie)

Really, As the Gods Will?  Wouldn't have said that was taboo when I watched it but maybe society changed in the past year again

God bless this thread, I've been looking for stuff like this for ages

Gonna chuck

Ichi the Killer, Lesson of the Evil and The Forest of Love  on here too, all JP

OP didn’t just ask for taboo things, they said taboo, spicy, weird, or disturbing so I gave them a mix of different things that are all at least one of those.

OH RIGHT, I just re-read it and I'm laughing, my bad

XD

I just saw taboo and was like ah yes content where i go from fine to ridiculously uncomfortable in 0.2 seconds good stuff and then just ?.?

It’s not a movie but a drama: Proud of love. It overall puberty (and what’s related to the body) in a very funny way!

That's exactly the emotion I was looking for LOL perfectly described!

But yeah there is already a ton of good stuff mentioned in this thread. already watched around 5 titles, would definitely recommend The River and Visitor Q.

If you liked it, you should check out the rest of Tsai Ming Liang's movies. Some of them are more provocative, some of them are pretty mild but most of them have the same set of actors and, watched in chronological (release date) order make some kind of prequel-sequel relation list (but not exactly, all of them can be watched separately), where Hsiao Kang/Lee Kang Sheng grows up - starts as a very unhappy teenager, then very unhappy young adult. If you like the kind of depressing, unhappy and suffocating atmosphere TML creates, I recommend you check out other movies from Taiwanese New Wave Cinema. For example Toon Wang's A Hill of no Return - maybe not the most taboo movie, but it depicts gloominess of life perfectly.

There's also https://mydramalist.com/51903-run-away - made by TW and TML duo. I haven't seen it personally but synopsis seems like you might enjoy it - and you also liked The River.

I just remembered I also watched a PH movie called Mondomanila: https://mydramalist.com/28175-mondomanila It's brutal, provocative, shot in a very unique way. It was very very disturbing.

Love exposure (don't get scared from the duration. It is an easy watch, even though it is weird af)
