I dont hate it. Oddly the special episode ruined what felt like a very thoughtful ending even if it wasn’t my preferred ML scenario. I mean by end of episode 24 we are sure he’s an NPC, but she grew strong enough through his love and the love she developed for her crazy game family that she could face going back to a real world without them. Thats a meaningful character arc.
I like the special episode confirms their future but if they went this route I really wanted at least an episode or two in the real world showing what their lives are like and verifying they can connect outside of the heightened game scenario. Plus we received no verification of how his participation in the game worked.
I think if they’d shown those last few scenes and the special episode scenes in linear order instead of jumping around, it would have worked better despite lacking any time spent together in the real world.
I agree with you a 1000% on your points. The special episode felt gratuitous for viewers who need the sure-fire happy ending. But having such a thought-provoking and meaningful ending in her inner transformation and growth was all I needed really. I prefer the open-ended ending at the end of ep 26. It carried so much poignancy and meaning.
Re: ML being an NPC, there were definitely lots of little hints along the way that ML was not an NPC. From episode 1, he says "that actually hurt," he very subtly chooses not to respond to FL's modern world musings, at one point says "I can't believe I met you here" (which I interpret as "I can't believe I'm meeting the love of my life as a beta tester in the game I'm building), and at another point (very subtly) asks her follow-up questions to see how she responds. If I were a CEO beta testing a game while being in the game with a beta tester, this is exactly how I'd act. Nonetheless, these are all very subtle hints, which I give the director and actor kudos for.
