He became annoyed that the tracks he was selecting didn't suit his performance, and as the arranger had no experience in gymnastics, and it was difficult to convey his image. So, he decided to create his own accompaniments and went to Akihabara to buy software that could compose music with just a computer.
With no experience in music, the basis for his knowledge was how sounds resonated with his movement and the image he had in mind. He also read books and researched sound frequencies and their relation to endorphins and dopamine.
He made a rule to copy at least one song a day and mix it to produce the "sound image" he wanted. It was something that eventually evolved into him being able to create his own original work.
While teaching himself more in the realms of music theory, Hayashi realized how limited his options were to become a professional rhythmic gymnast. He decided that he would start to create accompaniments for other gymnasts and started his career as a rhythmic gymnastics music composer. Being one of the only composers with actual athletic experience, he was able to paint other gymnasts' images and transform them into music. He became the go-to guy that people went to for their accompaniments.
As a college student, he needed to find a way to make money, and so he charged ¥5,000 per piece.
After graduation, former gymnast, DJ, and one of the most prolific electronic music producers in Japan, Hideo Kobayashi, took him in as his apprentice. This was Hayashi's opportunity to learn more about how to create music professionally. While studying under Kobayashi, he was taught a variety of things and was able to refine his already-acquired skills while also adding more to his expertise (dance music, beat making, etc.).
He officially began composing music for athletic competitions such as dancesport, gymnastics, figure skating, etc. Hayashi realized how passionate he was about music and wanted to challenge himself more to broaden his horizons.
In 2009, he sent a demo song to a record company called Legendoor. Hiroyuki Sawano, the head member, listened to it and was so impressed that he invited Hayashi to collaborate with him on an upcoming drama he was going to be working on called Triangle. This was his big break. Soon after, Hayashi joined the agency, giving him a chance to create even more music.
Yuki Hayashi now handles scores for TV dramas, anime, and films.
