Lai Suen was a Hong Kong actress born in British Hong Kong, with her ancestral home in Xinhui, Guangdong, China. She came from a film family. She was the daughter of Lai Man Wai, the "Father of Hong Kong Cinema", and his concurrent wife Lam Cho Cho. She was the fifth child in the family (with 10 other siblings besides herself). Her brother-in-law, Shen Chang Huan, served as the Republic of China's Ambassador to the United States, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Secretary-General to the President. Her cousin was the late Cantonese film actress Lai Cheuk Cheuk, and her niece is actress Gigi Lai.

She made her early debut in films. In the 1950s, she went to mainland China to study and live, and did not return to Hong Kong until 1979, when she entered the television industry. She first made a guest appearance in the TVB drama "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" (網中人), and soon joined Rediffusion Television (RTV, the predecessor of Asia Television). During this period, she also participated in educational television productions. In the 1990s, she moved to TVB. After the 2010s, she gradually withdrew from the entertainment industry. The TV drama "Only You" (2010, aired in 2011) was her final television work.

On February 24, 2023, at the age of 91, she, along with fellow veteran Hong Kong artists Kong To and Yu Mo Lin, was presented with the "Outstanding Performing Arts Award" at the Hong Kong Performing Artistes Guild's Spring Banquet, in recognition of her many years of contributions to the Hong Kong performing arts scene.

On August 28, 2025, she passed away at the age of 93.
