I have a few thoughts about it- the first one is that A Sen has been struggling with the ZL ever since he falsified his military merit. Then ZL used Yucheng’s head to… well, lie for merit again (because he would have been one head short of a promotion without it). Idk if A Sen is JUST mad at Zhao Ling for what happened to Yucheng, but if it’s instead more a culmination of the character that ZL is becoming, which would be more in line with the theme of ZL becoming a different person than he was before. ZL used to drill into A Sen’s mind not to kill anyone and here ZL is murdering officials, lying twice about military merits, being more reckless and making enemies.

We will see how much of this actually passes censorship. And I s2g if ZL doesn’t take off his hat while making out with his wife on their wedding night I will riot 😂 It would also be nice if FTY’s headdress was taken off as well. I can’t imagine that would be comfortable 😂

Very insightful, thank you! The scene with ZL and the emperor in episode 20 was uncomfortable and now it makes sense why! The emperor isn’t a friend of ZL, as emperors in other dramas are often portrayed as friends of the leads.
🤣 But seriously how many Cdramas have there been when we see the desire for each other before marriage, but as soon as they get married and sleep together for the first time all of the passion stops afterward? That’s like almost EVERY historical Cdrama! Screw that (pun intended) — give me a hubby and a wifey who still want each other after the wedding night! Like “A Splendid Match” - the leads literally had intimate scenes or implied intimacy almost every single episode after they got married. Lots and lots of intimacy. I love that.

It’s not surprising that their reunion wasn’t more heartfelt. 5 years of no contact would create some awkwardness and uncertainty with any couple, and ZL underwent a lot of character development in the last several episodes. He is much more cold and distant, and he has a dark and reckless edge now that he didn’t have before. He’s losing himself in his quest for power and that’s the point of tension with the leads now. So if you’re noticing the distance between the ZL and FTY, the writers have done a good job 👌🏻Trust the process — their relationship is supposed to feel distant now as Zhao Ling works through his inner demons and perhaps Tingyun will help save him from himself.
It’s one of the drawbacks of limiting the amount of episodes. Gosh, if they were able to spread this story out…
This drama would have been great for it. More episodes could have been dedicated to developing backstories and friendships, more time spent on traveling from one place to another instead of skipping ahead from one place to another… We could have also gotten a handful of episodes to fill in the separation arc - first with what his life was like in combat, and what FTY was up to during the years he was gone. So much could have been fleshed out 😔Like The Story of Minglan. Regardless, if this drama keeps up with the quality, it’ll be one of my favorites.

I’m actually hoping that they will become friends lol. FTY needs a bestie, and she knows a thing or two about being used and feeling trapped. Maybe somehow they will be able to help each other out. Obviously ZL won’t be taking a concubine lol, and it would be nice seeing girls help girls instead of the opposite.
