Yup, that is why CX is the male lead, and he "lost her forever". The title is for him. Some people said it's for XL too, but I dont think so. The XiangSi mean to yearn and pine for. So the title is Eternally Yearning for you. If XL had already done everything and died then he wouldn't be the one yearning for XY. He left happy. It's CX who still alive and yearning for XY who now wander the world where he can't find her. The same way the novel started.

Not comparable to the two dramas you mentioned.
This is a romance story, 4 attractive men, 1 girl.
It's well done. There's a lot of romancing around. Tragic and complicated character - that's why it's so popular.
There's no obvious good vs bad guy here like LBFD, and no turning bad guy good like TTEOM. The story here is focus on the FL, who went through a tragic past, to find love and trust again.

XY and 17 spent some sweet time together. Then XY got assassinated. She died. Jing got too devastated and fall into a coma. XL saved XY by giving her one of his live, using a voodoo blood spell and feed her his blood (from the heart) for 37 years.

XY came back. Jing wake up. His grandma tricked/poisoned him with a delusional spell and he thought he slept with his fiancé. She got pregnant. 17 and XY broke up. 17 got married.

The political machination came to a peek. Previously CX killed the people who killed XY. They are related two of 6 big clan of the Middle Plains. CX got cornered and needed to get married to one of the top 6 big clan daughter. Through this wedding, his association with the Middle Plains family is well known. News traveled back to Xiyan and the uncle there convinced the Xiyan Emperor to visit the Middle Plains. (They planned to accused CX of treason by colluding with the Middle Plains families to overthrow the Xiyan Emperor).

Long story short. The Emperor came. Everyone hides and don't want to be associated with CX for fear of being accuse of treason. The uncle also staged a fake assassination attempted and blame it on CX. XY got CX back the whole time and argued for him in court. The uncles were mad in the face but could do nothing because the Xiyan Emperor let XY say whatever she wanted. When they left, they were assassinated but escaped. They knew the situation is very dire. FengLong suggested to XY to marry him so he can become clan leader of Chisui. Then he can openly support CX. At this time Jing also agreed to support CX, and got the other big 4 clan to support him. The last clan Xiling clan is related to CX so obviously support CX.

XY agreed to marry FengLong. So now the world know the top 4 clan + middle plains support CX. The Xiyan Emperor have a ceremony, where he announced he would abdicate the throne to CX. CX became the new Emperor. (The Xiyan emperor always planned to give the throne to CX but he needed CX to become stronger himself to suppress the rebellions once the throne is pass to him). The crisis is over.

XY, the old Emperor and CX live together in the Middle Plains. CX married Xinyue as his Empress. XY got bored/depressed now crisis is over. She fall in love with medicine and started to write a medical manual. Years passed and FL asked XY to get marry to him. She agreed.

On their wedding day, FFB show up and took her away. XY have to agree because the love bug promise she have with XL. XL took her back to Qingshui town and she met Tian Er who is now in her 80s. She again is inspired by Tian Er words. XL told her he stopped her wedding because 17 bought the promise from him. XY got mad and went to look for 17. Because of Tian'er words, XY decided to have a heart to heart talk with 17 where she finally told him she knew Fangfeng Yiyang was up to no good but never told him because she never truly believe in him. Deep inside she was waiting for him to fail. And now she realize that was wrong and her pessimism cause her to lose her love. She cried and confessed she never had a good night sleep in all these years. She said what happened is water under the bridge and they should never meet again. When she was about to leave, 17 was about to fall over and she grabbed his hand. She diagnosed him and realize his health is terrible and wouldn't have a lot of time left. He told her he had doubt about the night he "slept" with Fangfeng Yiyang. This make XY suspicious, and she started to connect that Yiyang and Hou are having an affair. XY told Jing to trust her as she need to do some experiments.

Then XY tried to seduced Hou and succeeded. She told Jing to go catch the two in the act. Fangfeng Yiyang and Hou met up (which they had avoided doing for decades), and Jing was able to record their conversation. The child end up not being from Jing, but Hou. With this, Yiyang is punished but they told the world she got very sick. Hou is banished from the clan. XY and Jing then resume their relationship. At this point, XY real father identity is leaked and her father the Haoling Emperor disowned her, confirming the rumors.

XY and Jing went on a trip to where her mother died. There - she met her father who had been trapped this whole time. They talked, XY confirmed her parentage, and the father finally died. She came back and that's when CX told her he will attack Haoling. She got mad at him of course.Long story short, during the war, they hear that the Haoling Emperor got really sick, so XY, Jing and CX sneaked into Haoling. He told them that he had trained CX to be his successor all along because he have no son, and never intended to have one. They agreed that Anian should marry CX and be an empress, but stay in Haoling. CX was not happy but could not refuse. He told XY that he has never been happy once at any of his weddings. XY told him he would find his true love someday and told him if that happened, to never let her go. CX can only look at XY bitterly. Finally, CX became the sole emperor of all three kingdoms.

XY and Jing decide to have their wedding. 10 days before the wedding, Jing was assasinated by Hou. XY was so devastated she wore her wedding dress on the wedding day waiting for him when everyone knew he already dead. Someone tricked XY by sending her a message with Jing's voice. She almost died but actually didn't care and wanted to die anyway. XL saved her again. Of course. Some unimportant things happened... Then XY was assassinated again. This time she confirmed who tried to kill her twice. Because during the second attempt, she heard their conversation. It was Xinyue and FengLong.

After that, XY confronted Xinyue and finally heard from Xinyue that CX love her. She didn't believe it but CX walked in and confirmed it with XY. XY didn't took it too well and avoided CX for a while but eventually came around.

Finally, now that CX got the whole world, he need to take care of the Chenrong rogue army thing. They attack and FengLong was desperate for an accomplishment so he can use it to beg for forgiveness for his sister Xinyue. (for the assassination attempt). He died. And FL finally told CX that the whole time, it was Jing's idea to come to the Middle Plains, and that it was Jing who convinced FL to support CX. During this time, XY confronted XL (who tried to killed CX but killed FL instead). XL hinted to XY that CX killed Jing. XY didn't believe XL and said to XL she will never meet him again. (And this is their last meeting). Later on XY had an epiphany and confronted CX who confirmed that he did killed Jing. In CX mind, Jing was not good enough because he hurt XY. XY got so mad she shot at CX and the old Emperor had to step in. (He knew this whole time CX love XY). He quarantined XY and took away all her poison, not letting XY meet CX.

XY send a message to CX to meet up in the red blossom garden he built to re-create the one from their childhood. There she told him she have to kill him because he killed Jing, and offer him poisoned candies. He took it, they both did, while reminiscing about their childhood and eventually passed out.

CX woke up, thinking he's back in Haoling and everything was a dream. When his servant called him "Emperor" he realized that it was not a dream. Then they told him that XY did not feed him enough poison to kill. However, she ate enough so that she died. However, even though she's dead, there's this tiny heartbeat in her they can't explain why. She was put in a special coffin and sent to Jade mountain. There, XL appeared and save XY AGAIN. This time, however, he also broke their love bug curse, by giving up one of his live. But XY never knew and never saw XL again.

XY woke up and devastated by what happened, decided to become the next Jade Empress. This is very lonely job. On the day of the coronation, Jing showed up unexpectedly. So XY decided to go with Jing.
This and that happened, and Jing and XY got married. She stayed with the Haoling Emperor (who now live as a blacksmith in the Middle Plain) for a while. They got news that XL died in battle. XY cried her heart out and was heartbroken. Then they decided to leave to wander the world. But the Haoling Emperor did not tell CX, so he thought he was with the Haoling Emperor the whole time. With XY face changing ability and Jing fox ability, they can go anywhere undetected, and CX could never find them again. THE END.

The clan relationships were never explained that much in details, only the couple of main leads are. In general, this is the hierarchy:

1. Top three royal family clan: Xiyan, Chenrong (fallen), Haoling.
2. Top 4 major clan (is not align to any kingdom, but has power and influences, work with any royal families): Chisui, Tushan, Xiling, Last one hasn't mentioned yet but barely appeared.
3. Top 6 major Middle-plain families: Tan, and the rest: not mentioned much. Around 2 of these families have ties with the people who killed XY in episode 30.
*For level 3: Each kingdom has their major clans. Xiyan major clans aren't mentioned in the novel. Haoling major clans are not mentioned yet until the end because they are not needed until then.
4. Other smaller prominent clans: Fangfeng clan fall here. There are numerous of these clans.

Relationship:
In the beginning there were three kingdoms. Xiyan attacked and conquered Chenrong, so now there's only Xiyan and Haoling.
With marriages: It's normal for top 4 Major Clan to intermarried with other Minor Clans and each other. Tushan family is in business so have so far avoided marrying with the royal family so they don't have to take side.
Chisui clan's direct daughter married Chenrong. Xiling's daughter married the Xiyan's current Emperor. The last one - very private and kept to themselves.

Because of marriages alliances, the major clans kids are usually distantly related cousins. Jing's mother is related to the Chisui clan so Jing is distant cousins to Xinyue and FengLong.
The Xiling lady who married the Xiyan Emperor is XY and CX's grandmother. Hence, they are also descendants of the Xiling clan. So CX and XY is probably distant cousin to Jing as well.

Because of this, that's why only Jing can be the next clan leader because the other clan (Chisui and Xiling) is related to his mother. If Hou is the next leader, the other two Major clan will not support him, and therefore does not support the clan, which make everything more difficult. That's why Hou and Fangfeng can only go and seek support from the Xiyan uncles.

I always felt XY making "cake" for XL is her gesture of love for him. She kept screaming she's making "poison" but everyone could tell there's so much love in it. Our girl was in denial. But I think XL can tell so that's why her cake probably is the sweetest poison of all.

let's be real, there's no reason for XY to marry FL anymore. She could cancel it if she wanted. Idk why she stick through it when she's still obviously not over Jing AND she has XL. But it did created a nice arc/side story.

TSJ know/suspicious that XL is FFB - he just didn't have proof but he could tell.
As for doing business, XL is leading a rogue army. Even if they were doing business, there is no need for TSJ to show up himself. I think we seen him so involved only because of XY (whether with CX or with XL). The TSJ business is super huge. So it's not necessarily for him to show up to every deal. And when it come to customers, the rogue Chenrong army is not ideal and not worth it to deal with in person.

Luo Yunxi was already in the adapted version of Once Promise. So I think he won't act in the same drama/adaptation in a new role.
I am just as traumatized as Tonghua so even though this has Yangzi, I kept my expectation really really low because I was just tired of being disappointed. But the drama is phenomenal. It really did justice to the novel.

Agree. He could play XL as well but I think he would have played XL much colder~ closer to the book. Nevertheless he would pull that angst through the roof too.

Yeah they really skimmed on the world building because it's a sequel. EVEN then they should have done some introduction. However, the basis of the story use Chinese creation mythology so it probably didn't need much introduction to the native audience. AND on top of that, it tried to separate itself from the said mythology.

In this story, the dieties and demons live in DaHuang (which included all three kingdoms). The only point of crossing is that Qingshui Town where some humans and demons mixed in. So it has a separate rule, kind of like a point of crossing between the heaven realm and the human realm.

Yuzheng had messed with at least 2 Tonghua novel to drama productions so this is for the best. If Xukai had signed on I wonder if Yuzheng would have any influence on the drama.

this is heaven will. It worked out for the best. Love Xukai but he's not suited for the role of CX. Zhang Wanyi really nailed his role. And I think he would have nailed Jing too if he did pla that role. He can switch the pity party up if he wanted to.

XY's mother chose her XL, paid for it with her life, and left behind a young XY ridden with enemies.
If her mother had chosen differently, XY would have grow up with love and safety like A'nian. Then she would have the courage to love someone like XL. That means that either her mother or her will choose their XL, but only one of them can. XY already paid the price for her mother's decision. No wonder she can't do it again.

Had XY not came back as the Haoling princess, I think she would have a chance with XL - but that doesn't matter either because he will choose to die anyway, the same way as XY's dad. If they have a child together, that child future will be like XY. XL and XY future is already determined before XY was even born.

If CX had confessed and committed to be loyal to XY then they would have had their happy ending. This mean they both abandon their identities, and CX never coming back to claim Xiyan.

If XL had confessed or was truthful about his feelings, things could have ended A LOT different. But one thing that would remain is - XY will be left alone because XL had chosen to go down with his ship. The fact XL tried to hide, lied to XY so she can't find out his feeling until the bitter end shows that he only care about HER feelings. How devastated she would be if she knew.

The thing with XL and XY is that they have feelings for each other but always tried to suppressed theirs and hide it from the other. XL knew dang well XY love him. Deep down XY know he love her too but lied to herself over and over. I don't believe XY don't know. She's a smart girl. She knows, but she didn't dare to let herself accept it. It would have open a gate to her heart that she don't dare to open.

If XY was like An'ian. If XY grew up with love and security, I think she would have chose XL. She would have love unabashedly. But then that also mean she follow her mother's footstep.

In reality, modern setting - I choose Jing in a heartbeat. But the only thing is I would cut off contact with him until he broke off his engagement. Because in modern day where I'm at forced engagement is not a thing. However, even if it is, it given me the "ick" to have a secret relationship.

For CX - Stay friend or cut off if he confessed. Even assuming there's no "blood relations", I wouldn't choose someone like CX. He made his choice and show me what's his priority is. I understand him, support him, and will always have his back. But not as a romantic partner.
For XL - I would be really turn off in the beginning and avoided further contacts/ interactions. Assuming I'm like XY and is forced to have continued interactions due to circumstances, it will be hard for me to change my mind. I'm not into "bad boy who's bad to everyone but only good to me" hype. Never found that to be attractive because I always thought, well what happened when I'm no longer in your good grace?

I think he's suspicious but I don't think he knows like he know Jing like XY.
